Los Angeles Chargers History

Established in Los Angeles in 1959 as a charter member of the American Football League, the Chargers moved south in 1961 and played in San Diego through the 2016 season. Since the merger, the Chargers have appeared in the playoffs 15 times and went on to appear in Super Bowl XXIX in 1999. They have captured 15 division titles to date. In 2017, the Chargers moved back to Los Angeles after 56 seasons in San Diego. The team has a total of 15 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including LaDainian Tomlinson, Lance Alworth, Ron Mix, Sid Gillman, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Fred Dean, Bobby Beathard, Don Coryell, and Junior Seau.

Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium

The Chargers called the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home during the team’s first year of existence in 1959. After relocating from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017, the team played at Dignity Health Sports Park through the 2019 season while SoFi Stadium was under construction. As the first indoor-outdoor stadium in America, SoFi Stadium is a state-of-the-art venue that can accommodate up to 70,240 fans for Chargers games. Costing $4.9 billion to construct, it is the most expensive NFL stadium to be built.

Located on the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack, the stadium has played host to a variety of sporting events, including Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, and will be the site for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympic Games in 2028. It is also the home field for the Rams, making SoFi Stadium one of two stadiums currently shared by two NFL teams.

    Nice stadium

Took a Raider fan to see the game. Stadium is gorgeous, coverage is stellar. I don’t even particularly like football and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

    Visually stunning, sonically challenged

by Captain Phoenix on 10/4/23SoFi Stadium - Inglewood

Sofi is an amazing piece of sports architectural genius with one flaw. Like the old Forum, it’s hard to get the sound right. With the breeze through openings at each end of Sofi, you get efficient cooling, but for some reason it’s hard to mix the sound. Maybe from section 441, row 1 it’s right in line with the large speakers. I could not understand anything spoken with the cacophony of general noise. Otherwise, Sofi is a visual marvel.

    Chargers Home Opener

by Building Surgeon on 9/15/23SoFi Stadium - Inglewood

I went to the Chargers Home Opener against Miami. I basically went to see SoFi Stadium for the first time. If you haven't been to a game, there I would suggest you go just to see the Stadium it's out of this world. We had seats in the Ticketmaster Club Area & the seats were great but extremely overpriced. The Ticketmaster area is really nice with its own bar & seating area. We ordered food at the concession stand & that's when things got really bad! The service was horrible & the food was cold! I ordered a hot dog & it was cold!!! I took it back & they gave me another one that wasn't any better. The prices were about average for a game like this. But if I'm going to pay that kind of money for a hot dog, I would at least expect it to be HOT!! Getting into & out of the stadium was a little time consuming but not bad. Hopefully when & if you go to see a game that you have better luck with the food!! In all of my years going to the Chargers Games in San Diego I never had as bad of food as here.

    Top stadium; missing details

by Doug R on 1/4/23SoFi Stadium - Inglewood

For a multi billion dollar stadium, Sofi lacks the ability to walk completely around certain levels of the stadium. How can having a huge screen inside the stadium and there’s still be lacking of game information all the time? This Steve him needs additional scoreboards. The steam also lacks the ability to purchase other teams merchandise. For example if it’s a home Chargers game it’s only charge us merchandise. However I’m a fan of both teams the Rams and chargers and was not able to purchase any Rams merchandise. You would think that you would want to make money but you just lost the opportunity to do so by not offering the sports fan anything. Concessions – I didn’t see any kind of burgers. Pricing seemed pretty decent. However don’t try to special order anything because they don’t understand. Concessions needs to provide lids and straws on their drinks because sitting in the upper deck the steps are so steep that it’s difficult to try to hold onto your food and drinks and yet walk up the steps having to hold the handrails as well. So the stadium just lacks some important details which you think they would’ve had given the fact that it cost multiple billions of dollars. However it just points out that nobody looked at the little details from a fan‘s perspective. Exiting the stadium seem to be difficult as well. Loved the roof but yet the openness of the stadium. There was too much other entertainment during the event which seem to distract from the game and used the big screen too much. This was my first NFL stadium experience. I am a fan of both Chargers and Rams and was excited to see them. Like I said I’d only give this stadium a B. I traveled across the country to see them and spent a lot of money for the nosebleed seats. So I guess my expectations were higher and were not fully met.

    Worse day of my life

by Rained on in a dome on 1/4/23SoFi Stadium - Inglewood

The game was terrible. Seats were terrible. Rained on. The rain came in sideways and was unbearable. Bought insurance for game tickets and they changed the time of the game from 5:20 to 1:25

    SOFI Stadium - Chargers game

by Bob K on 12/14/22SoFi Stadium - Inglewood

The stadium was well worth the experience. Had club seats that were fantastic. The home and away (Dolphins) crowds were great. Food and drinks were very good for stadium food. The video board is terrific. The only minor complaints is the sound system is terrible — it echos badly — and there are insufficient rest rooms resulting in huge lines.
