Los Ángeles Azules on Tour

The timeless cumbia rhythms of Los Ángeles Azules will crisscross El Norte this year. Launched in the early '80s by a half-dozen siblings of the Mejía Avante family, Los Ángeles Azules (Blue Angels) have surfed wave after wave of Latin music. It's been a long road, but their romantic take on Mexico's cumbia sonidera sound remains as popular as ever. Los Ángeles reignited once again last year with Esto sí es cumbia ("This Is Cumbia"), whose twist on original hits by Ha*Ash, Miguel Bose, Gloria Trevi, Yuri and other Latin stars hit the Regional Mexican Albums Top 10. They kicked off 2019 with "Nunca es suficiente" ("It's Never Enough"), written and sung by Natalia Lafourcade, which became Los Ángeles' first Regional Mexican chart-topper in 19 years. Live performances with the Mexico City Symphony Orchestra in 2016 demonstrated that cumbia belongs to everyone. But whether accompanied by a symphony or in their usual baker's-dozen configuration, expect to hear hits like "Cómo te voy a olvidar" ("How Could I Forget You"), "Por el amor a mi madre" ("For the Love of My Mother") and "El nuevo sonido de la cumbia" ("The New Sound of Cumbia").

Los Ángeles Azules in Concert

A family affair from the beginning, with more than two dozen albums to their name, Los Ángeles Azules began in 1983 as part of Mexico's young and rocking onda grupera movement. Formed by the Mejía Avante siblings Elías, Alfredo, José Hilario, Jorge, Cristina and Guadalupe, the band hit its first peak in 1996, when their chart-topping "Inolvidables" went platinum in Argentina, the group's second home. A new singer, Erick de la Peña, gave the band its biggest hit to date in 2002 with "Por el amor a mi madre" from the album Alas al mundo ("Wings to the World").

Los Ángeles' most recent surge began in 2013 with the album Cómo te voy a olvidar, an updated re-recording of the group's hits with guest vocalists including Carla Morrison, Lila Downs and Ximena Sariñana. And while the band's foundation in cumbia sonidera's ratcheting guïra rhythm and lilting accordion will never disappear, Los Ángeles Azules took their music to another level in 2016 with De plaza en plaza: Cumbia sinfónica, a glorious powerhouse blend of rootsy cumbia and sophisticated strings.

When my daughter gifted the tickets, I was happy to be able to attend. Of course we all know the popular songs, but the other songs I've never heard were great as well. Angeles Azules played for over 2 hours of great music and it flew real quick. Really enjoyed the show. Would definitely go again to see them.

The concert could have been better… I was hoping to see something different from last time they were here in El Paso. Same songs, dances or routines (how ever they want to call it). Will I go to another of their concerts? Honestly, no. Not worth the price. Sorry, you asked and I’m being honest. Have a good day.

  • It was okay

I had a good time but I don't think it was for me. I only New like 3 songs but it was nice to see older generations enjoying the concert.

It was a very nice venue. My only complain is that we paid good money to get good seats and people that were in the back walked to front and blocked much of our view. After a long time into the concert security finally told people to go back to their seats. People have to understand that it was concert NOT a dance. Security needed to have told people that were dancing on the aisles to sit down.

  • Great Show & Exitos

by Juan on 3/26/24Allstate Arena - RosemontRating: 5 out of 5

The show was everything I'd expected and hoped for in my pre-planning the trip. Rarely do I go out of state, let alone a 5 hr round trip, for musical venues. However, LA Azules El Amor De Mi Vida tour was well worth the trip. They are excellent stage performers AND crowd pleasers. They even had a dance contest of sorts, choosing 3 individuals from the crowd whom were supported by many in the crowd for selection to the final three chosen. Their musicality, multiple singers and dancers, and experienced stage persona made for a sight and sound experience of Cumbia the way it was meant to be. Free flowing musical renditions of classics and newer set pieces mixed things up to the crowd's satisfaction. Included were crowd pleasers which "El Rico", the bassist, recruited via feedback from the crowd for a playlist they loved to hear. This included "Como Te Voy Olvidar", "Amor A Primera Vista", "Nunca Es Suficiente", "Otra Noche", and of course "El Amor De Mi Vida". It was a non-stop musical extravaganza of Mexican culture served up in a lively take on Cumbia, lasting over 2 and a half hours. A special note to recognize outstanding performances: the guitarro player really burned up the play notes with a rousing homage to traditional rock and roll rhythm and fire, reminiscent of some of the best Carlos Santana blue notes, vis-a-vis The Supernatural Tour's smash hit "Smooth"with Rob Thomas. Although the night's show didn't actually cover this Santana/Thomas blues-rock classic, that spirit of living fire embodied by most excellent guitarro blues and bass lines was clearly represented on stage by the lead guitarist's blazing renditions and hot licks, & El Rico's more than capable bass lines. The guitar fretwork at one point elicited the rousing response of one theatre goer stating "the guitarist has gone crazy!"And the crowd just gobbled it all up, such a sonic feast for the ears, deep warm food for a hungry soul, and a bass line to lift and rouse even the most reticent of attendees to the night's performance. The female singer also deserves special recognition for a soulfully delightful stroll down all the classics Los Angeles Azules has become known for the past 7-8 yrs, at least. She did more than adequate vocal renditions of such LA Azules classics as: "Amor A Primera Vista"with excellent accompaniment from the male lead vocalist doing the Lalo Ebratt/Horacio Palencia lyrics. She also did an excellent rap rendition of LA Azules/Nicki Nicole "Otra Noche". And the soulful classic "Nunca Es Suficiente"(Natalia LaFourcade Silva) and "El Amor De Mi Vida"(Maria Becerra) were very poignant and lovingly rendered by the female lead vocalist. Finally, Jorge the accordionist, was unparalled that night at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. His fingers fairly danced across the keys & he was attentive to every note being perfect sounding. He squeezed and wrung out every last drop of sentimiento from that instrument on every song/ballad, but especially the sentimental love sonnet "El Amor De Mi Vida,"which resonated the chords of my very soul. All in all, one of the best concert experiences I've had in my life, and that's saying a lot.

  • My first AZULES show. Played all my favorites.

    by Ken L on 3/26/24Allstate Arena - RosemontRating: 5 out of 5

The sound was classic “Rosemont Horizon”!! From what I’ve seen, it was a standard set with no guest appearance. Seating was adequate and uncomfortable but we stood most of the time. Those folding chairs have seen a lot of shows! $25 to park in the lot of the place you just bought tickets for. Beware of the tap-to-pay. 15% min. tip! (w/o holding up the line to choose ‘other’) and many times the beer jockey never let you see the screen and he chose the proper tip. I paid $25.53 for a tall-boy of Modelo :(. Great concert and what you expect when you visit Chicago, IL.

  • Great concert almost 3 hours

  • No Room to Walk

by Jessy on 3/26/24Allstate Arena - RosemontRating: 4 out of 5

The map layout of the seating was a lie. I purchased floor seating tickets. In the seating layout there was not supposed to be another line of chairs. So I purchased tickets in the middle trusting there was no line in front. When we got there the chairs were all squished together we had no room to get out of line to go to the restroom. Next time I'll just purchase tickets at the end of the row like I normally would.
