Unburdened by contractual obligations and working at their studio and informal clubhouse Whispering Pines in Los Angeles, Lord Huron found the freedom and comfort to pursue their vision without compromise. The result is Vide Noir: a sonically bold, bravely-executed saga that pushes the bandās sound in ambitious new directions.
Singer, songwriter and producer Ben Schneider found inspiration wandering restlessly through his adopted home of Los Angeles at night. His aimless nocturnal journeys ranged all over the city ā across the twinkling grid of the valley; into the creeping shadows of the foothills; through downtownās neon canyons; way out to the darksome ocean. The resulting collection of songs feels like an epic odyssey through the city, across dimensions and out into the cosmos.Ā
Many of Vide Noirās songs were tested on the road as early as 2016 and honed with a jewelerās precision into their final form. Dusty ballads share space on the album with punky rippers, ā50s sock-hop sways and ethereal electronic passages. Each entry is a glinting star, and together they form a sonic constellation examining the search for meaning amidst the cold indifference of the universe.
Vide Noir was mixed by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips/MGMT) and engineered by Sonny DiPerri (Portugal. The Man, Animal Collective). The album honors the traditions of both rock and folk as it embraces modern studio techniques. The stylistic experimentation speaks to Lord Huronās confidence as storytellers and as craftsmen, armed with a growing array of tools.Ā
Lord Huronās work always comes richly adorned, and Vide Noir is no exception. The album will be accompanied by a wealth of imagery, films and immersive experiences crafted to expand upon its narratives and themes. A true multi-media artist, Schneider has previously used videos, a comic book, a choose-your-own-adventure hotline and assorted Easter eggs as means of deepening the listener experience. Fans steely enough to confront the ineffable have already uncovered a few of these accoutrements.
Lord Huron was created by Los Angeles-based Ben Schneider. Born and raised in Michigan, Schneider drew inspiration from the Great Lakes, which were carved by glaciers 14,000 years ago, and his music stands in awe and wonder of the natural world
After writing and recording two independent EPs (Into the Sun and Mighty) on his own, demand grew for Lord Huron to perform live. Schneider recruited friends Mark Barry (percussion), Miguel BriseƱo (bass) and Tom Renaud (guitar). Having first played music together at the tender age of 12, the group reunited and quickly hit their stride, transforming the project into a full-fledged band. Lord Huron signed with IAMSOUND, and the label released 2012ās Lonesome Dreams, and Strange Trails in 2015.
Strange Trails included the song, āThe Night We Met,ā which was featured in the Netflix original series ā13 Reasons Why.ā The series and song both became hits, and āThe Night We Metā was certified platinum in January of 2018. This year also marks the beginning of a unique alliance between Whispering Pines and Republic Records, who will partner in the release of Vide Noir.
Lord Huron has toured extensively in North America and Europe, earning rave reviews and performing for sold-out crowds at some of the worldās most prestigious venues. The band has appeared at a wide range of music festivals including Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bonnaroo and Newport Folk Festival.
Drove from Toronto to see them in Boston. Great venue! Awesome show.
You must see them live!! This show was stunning and so well put together
The show was phenomenal. First Aid Kit got a standing ovation (which is awesome for an opener) and Lord Huron was terrific live. They really gave us a great show and slammed through an inpressive set list. This was my first time to the Aretha and we really enjoyed it. Concessions were backed up and quite slow but the workers were all very nice.
The show was fantastic - both groups were outstanding! So glad my seat was under the pavilion since there was a pretty good downpour mid-show (did help bring the temperature down some). And the lay-out was such that those that wanted to stand by the stand didn't block the view of those that weren't up to standing the whole time. Parking was a bit of a scavenger hunt but it all worked out.
A very professionally performed event, from the band, to the stage crew, the night couldn't have been any better. The music was very illustrious and sonically beautiful, performed at a very beautiful venue. Best experience ever...
Great Concert music everything. THe energy..........without blasting ear drums. saw Duran Duran and tooooo LOud..
I listen to both First Aid Kit and Lord Huron on streaming services. The vocals are distinctive and this is one of the main reasons we went to Merriweather. We did not hear the words to all accept two songs in the opening act. As for Lord we did not hear vocals at all. The raucous music and heavy rain caused us to leave early. Still we would go to Merriweather again if the act matched our preferences. Also be aware the parking is free but difficult to figure out.
Came to show mainly to see First Aid Kit (who were great), but obviously stayed for Lord Huron but only knew 2 of their songs. Well, after this concert, I can't stop listening to them! Great show. Tight band and perfect harmonies.
We came for First Aid Kit, but Lord Huron came to play. They were amazing. I would see them a ton more.
Lord Huron put in a great show! We loved Firat Aid Kit as well. Looking forward to more great shows at The Merriweather.
It was a great evening with a wonderful performance by Lord Huron. The lead singer was especially good. The only downside was the extreme downpour during the Lord Huron set. Also First Aid was very good.
First Aid Kit was a new band to me and I loved them. Lord Huron was good - lots of energy but the sound was muddy and it was difficult to hear his words
I knew 2 songs by Lord Huron going into this concert. Had a friend tell how good a show it was several months ago so I decided to go when I saw it in my area. Didn't know what to expect, but WOW. Unbelievable energy and just a great show. Definitely worth looking into if you are not familiar with this band
First Aid Kit were first-rate, really sounded good. Wish I could have seen them... Lord Huron rocked much harder than I expected - great energy. Their sound mix buried the lead vocal too much, he was often lost in the, well, mix. But overall the music was great: in the middle of Lord Huron's set a huge downpour took place - water dripping through the ceiling onto the seats as well - but many on the lawn were up and dancing in the rain. Good stuff! Not so good: Lucky me, our seats were directly in line with two ushers who stood virtually for the entire show, directly blocking my view. I never at all got a clear view of First Aid Kit - and you know, darn it, one doesn't go to a concert just to listen but also to watch. Lord Huron was simarly blocked from view - one usher was quite large, his only saving grace was from time to time he'd sit down in a chair and usher from there - with no problem that I could see. We all understand what ushers do and why, but there is no reason at all to stand in front of people who paid good money to be there and block the view "because I have to do my job." Not like that you don't. Definitely a buzz-kill
Ben played all the hits seamlessly and was really active with the crowd and never stopped for like 2 hrs! It was a really good show an amazing performance thank you to him and first aid kit aswell as the rest of the bandšš¼
First Aid Kit was awesome. And then Lord Huron was awesome. The show was overall awesome.
I came alone to this show from Philadelphia and it was so so lovely. I had the most magical night seeing a band that means so much to me. I have never been to the area before but it was so easy to figure out and there were lots of people there to direct me to my seat. It felt like a dream :D
āEncoreā, could you repeat that please. Lord Huron has great energy but the lyrics were impossible to hear given the overwhelming base. Iāve been to many concerts that were loud and high energy but I could still make out most of the words being sung. Surely Lord Huron could have found this balance. Their warm up act, First Aid Kit, was awesome!
Great performance from a great band. Luv, luv, luv the band. Couldn't have been better...an outstanding band at a small venue...what more could you ask!
Im so ready to go see them again.Definitely my new favorite band. Great music, energy, class act!!!!!
