About

Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, IL, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quarter champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffeeshops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado State University, relocated to Paris for a semester, and eventually ditched college altogether to pursue her music career. Returning to the U.S., Lissie headed west and settled in Los Angeles, where she became a fixture on the local venue circuit and landed a national tour opening for Lenny Kravitz.

Lissie's music had already appeared on shows like The O.C., Veronica Mars, and House by the time she moved to California, and she widened her fan base by launching a weekly songwriter's circle at her local bar, Crane's Hollywood Tavern, and releasing a self-titled EP. Things truly began picking up speed in 2009, though, when Lissie released the dusky Why You Runnin' and toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne. Part of the Why You Runnin' EP had been recorded in the U.K., and she returned there in early 2010 to promote the release of her first full-length album, Catching a Tiger. Although she also made several appearances in America -- including a standout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a single date with the rebooted Lilith Fair -- Lissie spent most of her time touring Europe, where her debut record was released in June. An American release followed in August, courtesy of Fat Possum Records. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

    Lissie

by nandy61 on 1/30/11Webster Hall - New York

Its not often that a performer out-performs themselves in a live venue. SHe was simply amazing. She played around with her voice like it was a oft-used, hand-me-down toy. And resonant...Wow! Get thee to one of her concerts before she goes wicked "big-time".

    3 Stars

by Sahara33 on 1/30/11Webster Hall - New York

Lissie live was really good, but I would have liked her opener Landon Pigg a few more songs than just 5. I saw him last year when he opened up for someone else, and he sang most of his 'Boy Who Never' album and some off his first. Apart from that, Lissie was really cool, the drummer was to die for beautiful, and she sounded just like her cd's.

    Listen to Lissie

by RainbowChaser on 1/30/11Webster Hall - New York

Lissie is one of my favorite discoveries of the past year. I had her gorgeously tortured first hit: "Everywhere I Go" on repeat for weeks and each time I listen to it, I notice something new and even more beautiful about her. She's sometimes delicate and sometimes gutsy. Her powerful voice pays homage to good old female folk singers along with making the genre her own, and puts her up there with some of the best female performers I've seen in quiet some time. Lissie seemed to be having a great time up there and gave it at every second of her set. She has a lovely voice and a lovely presence. She started off with a bang , covering Hank Williams which not many can do, and ended with a bang with her ambitious take on Kid Cudi which she made so personal to her and it was refreshing and great to see a beautiful, talented and strong woman get up, give a legendary show and take some risks. I recommend getting a copy of her album, checking out her covers and buying a ticket to see her as soon as possible.

A concert? More like just stopping by

by Skyline10789 on 1/30/11Webster Hall - New York

She played alot of her good hits, sound was good, and venue was okay. But the show was more like a little stop along the way, too short. The event was scheduled for 8-11pm, but ended at 10:15. Whole thing felt rushed. Especially not worth it if you're not from the city. Drove 4 hours total for a 1 hour headline. (Plus there were alot of rude and chatty fans)

    EPIC

by kolthockey on 1/30/11Webster Hall - New York

I've been to my fair share of concerts in the past couple of years. Each of them have been awesome. I thought this was going to be an average show but boy was I wrong. Lissie was by far the BEST show I've ever been to. Her stage presence was insane. I was rocking my face off the entire time. I would recommend going to a Lissie show to anybody.

I expected good things from Lissie - I found her through PerezHilton (ironically) and was hooked instantly. Every expectation I had was exceeded. Her set was flawless and I'm still intoxicated by her performance.

Best Concert I Have Ever Been To

by Suddy on 1/24/11Cedar Cultural Center - Minneapolis

The concert was amazing. Lissie sounds better live than on her album. Her live songs include incredible guitar solos and you can really feel the passion with every song she plays. Lissie does an awesome job of explaining the meaning behind her songs and her interaction with the fans made the concert that much more fun. I can't recommend her enough.

    Lissie excellent surprize

by Spinalator on 1/19/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

Not knowing Lissie I went from just a couple of You Tube songs. I thought she was very energetic and her vocal range was wonderul. Soulful soothing and yet enjoyable. Her guitarist was great and the base guitar while playing percussion was quite entertaining. Overall I would definately go again if she returns to Denver.

Lissie @ Music Box = Great Night

by WestIndie on 1/18/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Loved this venue, the Music Box. Well kept theatre/rock venue, very comfortable, with impeccable sound. The sound was particularly crucial, as it made clear the great voices of all the acts. Can't wait to see more shows here...

    Best Concert Ever!

by dirtrod on 1/17/11The Music Box - Hollywood

My wife said, "It was the best concert she's ever attended," and that made it extra special for me since we don't attend a lot of concerts together. She had never heard of Lissie two weeks earlier and now she has her CD blaring from her car stereo. The Music Box was perfect. So many places where we've attended concerts before we've had to stand and this takes much of the enjoyment out of the experience. The balcony seats were excellent. I highly recommend this venue!

The music box was cool inside. The Pierces were a great opener, super fun and witchy! The first time is saw Lissie was last year and i fell in love with her lyrics and music, the crowd knew about every word and it was awesome. She did another awesome job and her incredible voice spoke for itself. love her!!i would def. go see her again!

Lissie is a strong emerging voice

by CP30 on 1/17/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Lissie really puts her heart into her performance which is why I went basically; to see her perform live with her amazing band and do the songs she currently has. To me her songs now are about "keeping it real", as she said that night (a life approach that comes from her mid western roots), especially in love but also in what it means in the struggle to be fully alive. Seeing her do them live with both charm and passion is wonderful. And her band kicks butt too! After all the songs, I realized she did so many oh, oh , oh's that it kinda blended some of them together but I know she will continue to grow and get better at her art. I feel that she has incredible good taste, she's obviously a very hard worker, and really, really loves what she does, so I look forward to seeing the good things that come next from her
