Lila Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez, who ran away from her village at 19 to sing in Mexico City cantinas and a Minnesota-born, Scottish-American film & photography professor, Allen Downs, who saw her singing and fell in love. Lila Downs was born in the Oaxacan mountain town of Tlaxiaco, 7,000 feet up in the heavens. The first songs she remembers are her mother singing Lola Beltrán's heartfelt rancheras, and her father singing Woody Guthrie's ''This Land Is Your Land.'' Her border-blurring, multicultural upbringing infused Downs with a firm world view in support of the disenfranchised working classes and an aesthetic vision that embraces cross-cultural pollinations.
As a result Downs has become one of the most innovative exponents of Mesoamerican music on both sides of the border. Her lyrics are high-minded and sentient and her sound is all encompassing. By drawing on a pan-Latin palette of music as well as American folk, jazz, blues and rock, Downs and her worldly band of kindred spirits, La Misteriosa, have won accolades and a devoted following of world music fans. Known for her smoky voice and magnetic performances, Downs has created a unique body of work that defies categorization in any single genre.
With eight studio albums and one live album released since 1999, Lila Downs has long been recognized by the music industry. She received a Latin Grammy for the 2004 release “Una Sangre,” and a Grammy nomination for 2008’s “Shake Away,” as well as various performance awards from around the world. Her 2011 release, "Pecados y Milagros" garnered both a Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, and a Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album. It also hit #1 on the Mexican music charts immediately after its initial release, and reached Double Platinum status there.
In addition to headlining venues all over the world, Lila Downs has performed at major festivals and events including WOMAD; Live Earth; Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, the World Sacred Music Festival - appearing with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama; the Latino Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama, the Bicentenario de Mexico, the opening ceremonies for the 2011 Pan American Games, and the 2012 Latin Grammys on Univision.

First time seeing her live and I fell in love with her show . The venue was excellent , very intimate and a great atmosphere
Although I do not know the Spanish language this show was vibrant and had me moving in my seat. What a beautiful concert of Mexican culture. Lila's voice and entertainment style captured the essence of her heritage. I enjoyed every minute.
The amazing Lila put on a non-stop show filled with wonderful music and creative costume changes. The only downside was the seating arrangement in the front rows which made it difficult to see the action.
Lila's music is an energetic, positive, cultural, social and political commentary all in a fusion of different musical genres---traditional Mexican music, cumbias, jazz, blues, rock. And I love her voice, a most powerful instrument!
Talented artist and authentic voice! The audience was able to hear her passion and emotion with every song :)
One of the best voices I ever hear. She cause me goosebumps.
Lila has a great voice. She makes you feel the music inside you. Transports you into another time or place .Also her musicians are very good. At the concert the audience where eager to hear more and she was generous and gave us more songs. But she had to rest and go home. I will fallow her tours to see when she is coming back. I had a Great time. Hope she comes back soon.
The theater staff was wonderful , very kind, and friendly.
Fabulous concert by this amazing artist. Wonderful voice combined with performance art. She brought the audience to their feet!
I loved the her energy, her voice, her emotion and her band. It was a great experience.
lila downs is amazing singer writer she inspired and touch many lifes with her music and talent she one of the kind
Lila Downs took my breath away with her Mexican folk singing style!
IT was a really good show but she could sing more than an hour and half! But she's amazing
Lila Downs is an absolutely amazing performer with an outstanding voice and generous soul. We have seen her live many times now, and she never disappoints! I am writing this review not to criticize her performance-- because she is truly spectacular!-- but rather to mention that the quality of our seats was misleading for future ticket purchasers at Town Hall.
great show,a lot of feelings listening her songs she is simply great.
the entire concert was excellent - Lila Down sing non-stop hit after hit. Her band was also amazing. Great concern
Lila is an incredible singer, fantastic voice and very proud of mexican roots. A model to follow and the best mexcian singer these days!
This is the fourth time we have seen Lila, and it will not be our last. We do not speak enough Spanish to know what the words are in her songs, but it does not matter, because you can feel her energy, emotion, and devotion to what she is singing. Her band is tight and she lets them to play and take the spotlight. We have seen and heard her in Carnegie Hall, at UCONN, (go Huskies dual champions), in Oaxaca at the Guelaguetza and now at Town Hall, NY., and each time it is amazing and always at a reasonable price. This show, at an excellent venue flew by in 90 minutes without a break, and then three encore's.
Lover her music and performance, Lila was a at her best on Saturday night.
The best concert from the opening act with Carla Morrison, to the main attraction, my girl Lila !! The best was the special appearance by Los Camperos. Loved the seats, the energy stirred up by Lila into the audience. Left this concert feeling revived, got rid of all my worries and stress, just outstanding !! Lila Downs is the epitome of true and raw art. Creative, sensual, compassionate. Her music, performance and voice makes me feel again !!
