Lila Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez, who ran away from her village at 19 to sing in Mexico City cantinas and a Minnesota-born, Scottish-American film & photography professor, Allen Downs, who saw her singing and fell in love. Lila Downs was born in the Oaxacan mountain town of Tlaxiaco, 7,000 feet up in the heavens. The first songs she remembers are her mother singing Lola Beltrán's heartfelt rancheras, and her father singing Woody Guthrie's ''This Land Is Your Land.'' Her border-blurring, multicultural upbringing infused Downs with a firm world view in support of the disenfranchised working classes and an aesthetic vision that embraces cross-cultural pollinations.
As a result Downs has become one of the most innovative exponents of Mesoamerican music on both sides of the border. Her lyrics are high-minded and sentient and her sound is all encompassing. By drawing on a pan-Latin palette of music as well as American folk, jazz, blues and rock, Downs and her worldly band of kindred spirits, La Misteriosa, have won accolades and a devoted following of world music fans. Known for her smoky voice and magnetic performances, Downs has created a unique body of work that defies categorization in any single genre.
With eight studio albums and one live album released since 1999, Lila Downs has long been recognized by the music industry. She received a Latin Grammy for the 2004 release “Una Sangre,” and a Grammy nomination for 2008’s “Shake Away,” as well as various performance awards from around the world. Her 2011 release, "Pecados y Milagros" garnered both a Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, and a Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album. It also hit #1 on the Mexican music charts immediately after its initial release, and reached Double Platinum status there.
In addition to headlining venues all over the world, Lila Downs has performed at major festivals and events including WOMAD; Live Earth; Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, the World Sacred Music Festival - appearing with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama; the Latino Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama, the Bicentenario de Mexico, the opening ceremonies for the 2011 Pan American Games, and the 2012 Latin Grammys on Univision.

Excellent experience and performer at a great venue.
What can I say about Lila Downs? It was a delightful night with Lila, she made us dance, sing and remember our Latino roots, it was an unforgettable evening. It was a magical experience in a magical place surrounded by the nature.
Great performance and great venue, loved Lila's songs wished she would have singed more of her own songs. Overall concert was great..
This was my first time seeing Lila Downs perform. I hadn't heard much of her music before this concert but I enjoyed every minute of it. She has a wonderful way of connecting with her audience and making them demand more. She has a natural charisma and it is clear that she loves performing, making the audience love to be part of the experience. Carla Morrison, who opened for Lila, was also energetic and engaging. A very unique and diverse sound. What an amazing night!
Awesome!!!! Lila Downs is surly one of Mexico's treasures....Ranking up there with Lucha Villa, Mercedez Sosa and Chavela Vargas.. Powerful voice.
Excellent Show! Performances were perfect and music was amazing.
THE ARTIST, LILA DOWN WAS SUPERB. ACOUSTICS WERE VERY SATISFACTORY AND THE LENGTH OF THE SHOW WAS ADEQUATE. ALL ENJOYED THE EVENING WITHOUT ANY COMPLAINT OTHER THAN ONE PERSON DID NOT LIKE THE SEATING.
She has such a great voice and such great energy! Much of the audience stood up to dance to each other as she sang some good upbeat songs. Her music reminds me so much of my homeland Mexico and it really made the experience even much better as she brought out a mariachi band to play their own songs and to sing along with her. Carla Morrison was an even nicer addition because I loved her voice and I've attended one of her smaller concerts before. Overall, the nice was unforgettable.
Loved her music, mariachi, she sang a few songs with mariachi Carla Morrison who opened for Lila was amazing too
Awesome show with surprised guest to make you get off your sits.
Amazing!!! Such a powerful Voice and presence, she is one of the greats!
Wow! My friend took me to see her and I've never heard of her or her work. I waited for the concert to form my opinion and was overwhelmed with her talent and performance. The mariachi was over the top and four encoures made me a fan for life!
I have one of her CD's and the songs are kind of folksy, She was definitely not "folksy" Sunday night. Great performance of just about every genre of music. The entire show was the best. Staging was also great.
Unparallelled Mexican singer who sings with such emotion and pureness. Although her CD's explain her phenomena, she sounds better in person as her voice slices through the air and swiftly gives you a kick to the heart.
THE BEST CONCERT OF THE YEAR, LILA DOOWNS IS A COMPLETE PERFORMER
She is very talented with an amazing voice. She knows how to engage the audience. She had us on our feet singing, clapping, and dancing along various times throughout the concert . I loved how she spoke in English much of the time which I'm sure was much appreciated by her many non-hispanic fans. I think it made them feel more connected. I will definitely go see her again.
Tow distinct vocals one absolutely magical event. A must see every time Lila is in town!
Lila never fails to put on an amazing show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lila was at home and personal. Don't guess she needed to speak English to a Latin crowd though. Great show!
I thought she was going to perform various songs from Oaxaca, but like someone said in a previouse review, Oaxaca was just a step stone. Disappointed!
