From 8:10 PM until just before midnight, 78-year-old Leonard Cohen performed for 3 1/2 hours, including seven encores, delivering one of the most memorable and delightful evenings of music I've ever had the privilege of attending. We had amazing seats, 6th row center, and Leonard was in fine form--funny and filled with an very Zen balance of humility and gratitude. He is touring with a remarkable group of musicians, and his voice, while always at a low gravelly growl, is still the finest instrument ever to interpret his haunting lyrics.
I had never seen Leonard Cohen perform live before, so I can’t compare his Memphis show to anything of his from the past, but I can say it ranks as one of the best concerts I’ve ever witnessed. It was more entertaining and enjoyable than the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, U2, the Eagles, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, to name just a few. Granted, this wasn’t an arena show like U2 or the Stones, so it’s not really an apples-to-apples comparison, but the only concerts that rival Cohen’s Orpheum performance in terms of amazement for me are the Grateful Dead and Neil Young. And I wasn’t alone. A gentleman sitting next to me said afterward that the performance -- his sixth Cohen concert -- was by far the best he’d seen. He and his son had driven in from Oklahoma and they were overjoyed with the show, the venue and the city. For selfish and civic reasons, it was great to have Cohen play Memphis. I have listened to Cohen’s recent live albums, and I had been following the set lists on the spring tour, so I knew what to expect from the song selections and arrangements. But even though it was a given that he’d start with “Dance Me to the End of Love,” finish with “Closing Time” and play the concert standards in between, I wasn’t prepared for the emotional punch he and the band delivered with each tune. He exuded poetry every time he opened his mouth, kneeled on stage or tipped his hat to the backup singers. Whether it was the songs I desperately wanted to hear -- “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Suzanne,” “Who By Fire,” “If It Be Your Will,” among others -- or some of the new ones I wasn’t as familiar with, I was enthralled with Cohen's every move, mesmerized by his every word. I hope everyone else in attendance last night felt even a shred of what I felt during the show and what I likely will feel for a long, long time to come. It was so incredible we drove to Louisville the following weekend for his show there. If you have a chance to see him, please do so. You won't be disappointed.
Amazing concert , elegant lyrics with excise music ...
Another spectacular performance by a true icon. Fabulous band with such diverse talent. An evening to remember. Can't wait to see Leonard again.
Went to the 6th & the 7th shows... I thought the performance on the 6th was more superior, more energy... but it could be due to the fact that it was also sold out (?).
First time in NYC and at RCMH... great experience, outstanding show, of course, great staff at RCMH. Went to both shows, the 6th performance was more energetic, but the 7th audience won't know that if they were not at both.
Pure mastery. From of course Mr Cohen's wordsmithery, singing, expression. What a gift to hear him read a song/poem! To the magnificent artistry of the musicians. To the sound and staging. Every word was perfectly articulated and heard. Pure beauty. This show was even more pure and perfect than that of 2 years ago! It was an experience of a lifetime. I feel so honored to have seen Leonard Cohen perform, and twice in my lifetime. Thank you Mr. Cohen for your gift.
This is the fourth time that I have seen Leonard Cohen in the last few years, and this show was probably the best of them all, although if you had asked me before the show I would have said that I didn't think he could have improved on the others! His voice just gets better, and more suited to the music, with age, and he seems to still be as passionate about the music and his performance as ever, if not more so. The musicians that accompany him are world-class, as are his vocalists. As incredibly talented as Sharin Robinson is, I will in particular never cease to be amazed by the perfect contrast between Mr. Cohen's voice and the voices of the Webb sisters - my favourite part of a completely amazing show. I would highly, highly recommend that anyone take the chance to see him anytime they can.
Probably the best concert I have ever been to. For someone at Leonard Cohen's age to be able to perform a 3 hour show at such a high level was incredible. The quality of the performance from the sound, to the lighting and the band members was first class. Well done Leonard. Well worth my journey from Scotland to see you.
Absolutely stunning. I enjoyed every minute of the performance. I hope there will be more opportunities to enjoy Leonard Cohen in concert in the coming years. What a poet, what an accomplished artist and a band of amazing musicians.
They do not make starts like Leonard Cohen any more!
Amazing from start to finish. He is such an amazing singer and songwriter and performs with such passion!
Unforgettable emotional concert. Just wish he had played a little more old stuff.
Incredible show at Radio City. Performed all the old favorites with mixing in some songs from the album “Old Ideas”. New songs are interesting as well... about...well you'll see. We had a intermission, which is bonus these days at concert hall. Made for a more relaxed experience and then Leonard and the band played on until 11:45. For the first time in while, I felt like we truly received our $$ worth’s from a concert; and it took a well conditioned 78 year old man to do that! If Leonard is at Radio City next year…. sign me up –The Beacon even better still.
A 78 year old promises to do his very best, delivers a three hour set, with nothing less than professionalism and verve. I could only be disappointed, inasmuch as, he wasn't the opening act for Jimi Hendrix.
Truly one of the best shows EVER! I brought my 25 year old son because he is a big fan. Was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed Leonard live. He played for 3 hours and gave it his all!. His musicians are top notch and he bows to them and their great talent. Wonderful show for people of all ages! He's a classic icon!
Absolutely amazing. Legendary, a true musical genius. Such a joy watching. Beautiful and inspiring.
This show was wort all the money and time that we spent to get to radio city hall
I spoiled myself rotten by catching Leonard live three times during this particular concert tour. For sentimental reasons (because he & I are both from Montreal), my vote of 5+ stars goes to the concert in Montreal. However, the one in New York was spectacular from start to finish. Comparing to what I've heard in earlier recordings, I don't understand how his voice is getting richer at age 78! I'm besotted with his voice, his presence, his everything. So I may not be the most unbiased reviewer. But I would beg any fan of his to catch him live just once in this lifetime. There was a trio of illustrious artists seated right behind me and they were paying their respects --- just like everybody else in the audience --- to the Man With The Golden Voice. If there were to be any regrets from that evening, it would be not having the chance to hear Leonard sing "Chelsea Hotel" in New York. I always connect Leonard, Janis Joplin, and those early days in this city with their guitar & gypsy lifestyle to this one song.
