I grew up watching Bjorn and John play. Just being in the same building as all these amazing players, was a gift. Getting to see them play was amazing.
I was lucky enough to attend the open practice on Thursday, September 21 with my grade 7 students. I was disappointed that our Canadian players weren’t on display during the hour World Team was on the court.
Next, I attended the Friday evening session. I was impressed with everything except there wasn’t any replays on the jumbotron. Also, the cameras spanning the crowd never showed the upper deck guests. We were having a good time as well! Having Roger Federer at the event was extra special because one would think he has retired and maybe he’s too busy to attend. This was a pleasant surprise! The interview after the night session was like a « cherry on top of the cake ». We must remember that these amazing tennis players are humans and can be vulnerable as much we can be. I loved how humble Roger is and how he treated his fans.
Sunday’s session was great. Even though Team World won it all in the 1st match, I was very pleased to watch Milos, Eubanks, Fils and Fokina battle it out. I don’t know if there’s a way to guarantee more matches on the final day, but I was glad it wasn’t over after the win. Thank you for the bonus match. At first, I thought maybe John and Björn were going to play. There was a lot of noise coming from the Captain’s Club behind Section 301 when the ‘bonus’ match was in progress after the big win. Not sure if there was a way to ask them to be quiet.
Overall, I sat in three different seats when I attended 3 out of 4 days. I must say I truly enjoyed my seat in section 301 on the final day. I got to see the match play like it was on television as well as seeing Roger up close.
Thank you for coming to Vancouver! As I told my students, this was a once in a lifetime experience. I will forever have these memories.
