Las Vegas Raiders History

The Las Vegas Raiders began play in the American Football League in Oakland in 1960. In 1963, they hired head coach and general manager Al Davis, who engineered the greatest one-year turnaround in pro football history, leading the Raiders to a 10-4 record after they posted a 1-13 mark the year before.

From 1967 to 1977 the Raiders appeared in three consecutive AFL title games and six AFC championship games. They won their first national championship title at Super Bowl XI in 1977, beating Minnesota 32-14. In 1980, they became the first Wild Card playoff team to win a Super Bowl, beating Philadelphia 27-10 in Super Bowl XV.

The Raiders moved to Los Angeles in 1982 and the following year won their third national championship title, defeating Washington 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII. After returning to Oakland in 1995, the Raiders won three straight AFC West titles from 2000 to 2002 and earned a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII. As the only franchise to play in the Super Bowl in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the Raiders are known as the “Team of the Decades.” The Raiders relocated to Las Vegas in 2020 and made a playoff appearance in 2021.

The Raiders have 30 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including owner Al Davis.

MNF SEASON OPENER W/RAIDER NATION...THE BEST!!!

by DWRECKN on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

The whole place was rocking from the time the jets few over after the anthem, to when the team took the field it was a night to remember. The only unfortunate thing is that the refs once again inserted themselves and created yet another flavor of a rule. I remember the last Super Bowl TD catch that Santonio made and replays only looked at 1. Did he make the catch? Yes and then 2. Did he get two feet down in bounds? Yes. That there is a TD!!! Now for the Raiders, 1. Did Murphy make the catch? Yes, he clearly had possession and only when he hit the ground did it come out. But he already had possession! 2. Did Murphy get 2 feet in? Yes, clearly he was in bounds. That my friends is a TD!!! The refs screwed up this game again and as usual it went against the Raiders. Outside of that, fans were great! (Even SD fans are okay) and the place was jumpin! If you've never been to a Raider game, season openers (especially on Monday Nights) are AWESOME!!! We'll be back next year!

    mixed feelings

by adellie on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

Well, first I had to pay $25 for parking and I was directed into "the gauntlet". People everywhere barbecuing and nowhere for me to go. It took me about a half hour just to turn around and get out of there. I went to the other side of the coliseum where they were really parking cars. Then I walked thru the parking lot of partyers. If you are a female and want to be disappointed by the male species, this is the place to go. I like to swear but have never heard the "F" word spoken so often.. Loudness, meat eating, throwing up, drunkeness.... But you know, when you get down to it, all the guys were basically nice. If I would have fallen down, they would have picked me up. And when I got into the game with my son who was wearing a chargers jersey, everyone did some polite jabbing, but nothing was viscious like those new yorkers. Oaklanders are very nice people and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

    Raiders Game

by Schurly on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

Our seats at this event were fantastic. We didn't realize when we bought the tickets, we were on the club level. The service on the club level is fantastic. I met Kenny Stabler who just happens to be my all time favorite Raider - wonderful experience. The only negative is the unorganized traffic congestion coming into the park. The local police do nothing to move the traffic - too bad. We parked across the street for $20 and walked over to the stadium. No big deal except we are not from the area and had no idea where to park after seeing signs that the stadium cash lot was full.

    Jamarcus isn't PHAT.

by NoCalBoltFan on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

The Raider fans were good sports. They hope so much for a victory but only to have it taken out of their hands once again. They boo'd the Charger fans but I did not see any altercations. The Raiders look like they have an improved team at every position except QB.

    Raiders vs. Chargers

by Wala23 on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

Fantastic game. Shame that the Raiders lost, but it was close. It is what it is, crazy fans, crappy food, great environment. BART was pretty painless to get home in a timely manner.

    Raider Fans blow

by natd0g on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

After watching such a back and forth game its so disappointing to be surrounded by such poor sports. We're there to watch a football game and people trying to start fights for stupid reasons, 45 y/o women puking on themselves and passing out, it makes me glad I am a Charger fan and can be proud of my fans and team. The game was fun, the announcing was great, it was just the people in attendance that blew. There is being supportive of your team, and then there is being a jack ass. Raider fans definitely fall in the latter category!

    too crowded

by eventviewer on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

The game was great. The seats were good. When the game started we had to stand up to see anything, and by half time the beer kicked and it started to get too loud and prophane. So we left. I'll choose a different area for seats next time

    Oakland vs. San Diego

by parkinglotsuks on 9/15/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

Waited 2.5hrs in line to get into parking lot just to pay $25 dollars? Unless you pay top dollar... the view is not the best from general seats. Raiders go up with less than 3 minutes kick off and pin the Chargers down on their own 11 yard line then give up a touchdown by using the "Prevent Defense". Only thing it does is prevent you from winning.

    Raiders horrible loss

by sportsfreak on 8/31/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

I love the raiders wheather they win or loose. I will accept this lose due to preseason, but still some big changes have to happen if they are going to get close to being a contender for the playoffs. I can't see blaming the coach, because Al Davis has used this formula over and over again of coach replacement and its not working. The raiders has lot of talent as usual, but for some reason the team is not clicking together to make things work. Just seems year after year its the same scenerio. They need to improve communication and better skills as a team not as individuals out to make a name for themselves. I will continue to support the team just like all the other die hard raider fans.

    PASSION

by fanforever2 on 8/31/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS NO LONGER PASSION FOR THE GAME, PLAYERS HEART NOT IN IT. COULD AGENDA TO PLAY BE PAYCHECK? PASSION FADE WHEN THE CLUB COACHES DON'T HAVE THE TALENT TO KEEP PLAYERS MOTIVATED. LOOSE THE COACHES AND GET FOLKS THAT LOVE THE GAME NOT JUST THE PAYCHECK. CONTACT MR. WTURNER FOR HELP.

    Raiders Need Improvement

by Jay9161981 on 8/31/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

I loved being at the Game, but They lost so badly, I didn't even stay for the whole game. It's hard being a Raiders fan sometimes.

    game sucked

by raider on 8/30/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

well this was a football game not a play or a musical. My team played poorly. I can handle a loss but this was ridiculous I know its only pre-season, nobody wants to see their team lose. I payed $300 of money most of us do not have to throw away.

    OVERPRICED!

by Oaklandresident on 8/30/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

How the Raiders can charge the same price for pre-season games as for the regular season is beyond me. The Coliseum was only about 20% full for this pre-season game, and with these outrageously high prices I can sure understand why.

    Great seating!

by SgtNordog on 8/30/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

My seat, at the club level, was AWESOME! I was on the 35 yard line, on the visitor side. I would definitely want seating like this for the next game.

Just going is fun, even if you're not a Raiders fa

by Declectic on 8/20/09Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Oakland

I went as a Cowboys fan and was pleasantly surprised to see that there was just as many Cowboys fans as Raiders fans. Raiders did their usual trash talking but hey, what else are they good at?
