Lane 8 on Tour

When you go to a Lane 8 concert, expect to tuck your phones away and be fully immersed in the experience. Daniel Goldstein, the man behind the moniker, is determined to bring community and carefreeness back into dance clubs with his dreamy, melodic house music. After finding a wider audience when he signed to Above & Beyond's label Anjunadeep in 2013, the DJ and producer took his career into his own hands, creating an event series called This Never Happened. At each show, attendees are not allowed to take photos or videos. Phone cameras are covered with branded This Never Happened tape when you enter the venue to prevent any temptation of capturing a digital memory. For Goldstein, this is a way to ensure everyone in the room is committed to connecting with the music — and each other. The idea has proven to be a successful one: Lane 8's 2020 Brightest Lights shows have sold more tickets than any of his previous tours.

Lane 8 in Concert

Lane 8 has gone through a long and fruitful evolution over the years — going all the way back to the days when musician Daniel Goldstein was a kid in California making garage rock with his sister. The young artist expanded his tastes into hip-hop, making beats by the age of 13, before transitioning into dance music as he attended clubs in college. Goldstein started his professional life as a geologist but was able to focus on music full-time when he moved to Germany with his wife. As Lane 8, the DJ and producer crafts smooth, pop-minded house music that gently prods the mind and body into a state of euphoria. After he began uploading his tracks and remixes online, he found a home at Above & Beyond's Anjunadeep label in 2013. Two years later, he released his debut album, Rise, which got a boost from guest vocalists including Matthew Dear, Lulu James, Solomon Grey and Patrick Baker. Next up, Goldstein put his full attention on launching his own label and event concept called This Never Happened. Under this name, he kicked off a series of shows that had one clear rule: No photos or videos allowed. In 2018, he invited Minneapolis synth-pop band Poliça and Australian artist Fractures to join on select tracks for his next album, Little by Little, released on his own label. Goldstein returned two years later with Brightest Lights, bringing back Poliça to collaborate on songs, along with British trio Arctic Lake and L.A.-based musicians Kauf and Nevve.

    Great event

by O. Y. on 7/23/19Grand Park LA - Los Angeles

The layout of the venue, easily accessible restrooms and vendor booths, together with good sound quality made this event very pleasant to be at. However, change of the original venue to Grand Park was not ideal. Grand Park is very 'open' and doesn't really allow for an intimate closed atmosphere.

    Always Room for Improvement

by Glo on 7/15/19Grand Park LA - Los Angeles

The revised venue was lovely and so was the stage. There should have been more port-o-potties and tents for beverages. A water refill station would have been nice, instead of having to buy water bottles... less waste that way.

    Success!

by F. G. on 7/3/19Grand Park LA - Los Angeles

The venue was perfect for this event. No phones or recording and the perfect sunset. I'm giving a score of 5 stars but there shouldve been more bathrooms and alcohol lines. It was a 18+ event but there was alot more of the older crowd. Took 30 mins minimum to get a drink every time. The bathrooms weren't being checked so toilet paper ran out alot and wasn't being restocked. But the event overall was the best I've been to in a while. Simple and perfect other than those two issues.

    Long lines, great music

by Max on 7/2/19Grand Park LA - Los Angeles

Line to get in the venue took 30 minutes. That's way too long. Lines at the bathroom didn't take as long but still not great. Line to get a drink at the bar was probably more than 30 minutes. Gotta do better than that!!! Music was on point though.

great music ruined by long lines

by rob on 7/2/19Grand Park LA - Los Angeles

we waited in a line that was 3 blocks long to get into a show that could have been held in a small theater. then, when we got in, every line for drinks was at least half an hour long, with attendees that had nothing they needed around them and were seriously taking their time. i probably spent a third of my time at this show in line, which made it a very bad experience

    Better than expected!!

by anxiousferret on 3/28/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

That was such an amazing show. I had expected the show to be really good, but it was even better than that!! I always find myself randomly zoning out to some of his songs when it comes up on my playlist now. Definitely reminiscing his show a lot *O*

    Not the same artist

    by Ag94606 on 12/13/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I saw Lane 8 last year and it was one of the best shows I've been to. His music is so unique and engaging and emotional. That's what I was expecting Saturday at the Fox. Instead I felt it was one of the most generic shows I've seen. Anyone could've been producing the beats he played. It had a very strong rave atmosphere which I never would've expected from his shows. The crowd seemed to love it but I can't say the same. I really missed the style of last year. I know artists change so perhaps we've grown apart. Too bad.

    Dammmnnn Daniel...i mean Lane8

by AnjunaSlut on 6/6/16Mezzanine - San Francisco

The whole no cellphones, photos, recording concept was a first for me to experince. Promoters definitely lived up to expectation with the stickers covering the cameras on your phone and security escorting you off the dancefloor if they caught you. But on to the music was amazing. Lane 8 played a lot of remixes from his album Rise. I would say it was more tech house than the normal anjunadeep i am used to hearing him play. Oh how i wish he played Nothing You Can Say my all time fav of his!! But in all seriousness Daniel hella threw down and it was definitely a night to remember!
