LA Galaxy History

The LA Galaxy have been playing for as long as Major League Soccer has existed in the U.S. They were one of the charter members of the league upon its creation in 1996, and in that first season, they held the best record in the Western Conference. They topped the Western Conference twice more before they clinched their first MLS Cup, beating the New England Revolution in 2002. History would repeat itself in 2005, when they emerged victorious over the Revolution to win the MLS Cup again.

From 2007 to 2012, an unexpected injection of star power took the Galaxy to a new place. British football legend David Beckham joined the Galaxy, and in short order there were more eyes on the team than ever before, and more MLS Cup victories in the 2011 and 2012.

Even after Beckham's departure, the Galaxy continued to shine. When they won the Cup over the Revolution again in 2014, they became the first team in the league to nab the championship five times. International stars continued to flock to LA afterward, including Britain's Steven Gerrard, Mexico's Giovani dos Santos andSweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Among the Galaxy’s alumni are three MLS MVP winners: Carlos Ruíz (2002), Landon Donovan (2009) and Robbie Keane (2014). In 2015, the award was renamed the Landon Donovan MVP Award to honor the decorated All-Star midfielder’s career. Donovan also earned the Golden Boot as the league’s leading scorer in 2008.

In 2023, the Galaxy helped set the MLS single match attendance record at 82,110 in an annual "El Tráfico" rivalry match against Los Angeles FC at the Rose Bowl on July 4.

Good match but me and my girlfriend were sitting last in the row next to the stairs. We spent half the game trying to look around people going up and down the stairs all game.

Howdee ManU fans !! Not at the big ball game ??

by TonyHStandexil on 7/29/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

What an experience !! After an amazingly speedy and well-coordinated approach to the plush Rose Bowl stadium, with no traffic delays and clear, well-signed pathways to the stadium from the superbly convenient and high tech golf-course-come-parking-lot, all eyes were on the big game ahead. A zip-seven shutout for Team ManU saw Galaxy bested and the Manchester boys elevated to pre-season strength status at soccer’s prestigious Chevrolet Cup Wednesday. Denny Well Becks 40-yard speed-play off the pylon was followed by the UK’s Wayne Roonee’s double score on the half putting the scoreboard on its head – with equalling jubilation in the ManU locker-room. Strikeman WellBeck scooted through midfield to slap back the Galaxy for the first of a zip-seven reverse. Now Rooney has bungeed back to claim the top-dog collar on England's special elite team outfit. In the first half, Robbie Keane was left staring at a yellow card rap-sheet when he was sin-binned for stud-checking fellow Englishman Big Phil Jones. Hispanic international De Gea’s blanking left the Galaxy facing a negative score-stat scenario and brought the Red Deviants to a 1-0-0 close-out on the road US Tour 2014 – presented by AON. After the TV commercial half-break, Lindegard, rostering for the tall Spaniard, performed big when LA’s offensive hitman Landon Donovan had a net-shot opportunity late in the third quarter. Replacing another Hispanic international, strikerback Juan Matador, at the half, Team UK Olympic squad member Tom Clever Lee shone in the warm crowd delighting 86,000 plus fans. And the British defense performed hang-tough also, though a non-call on defender Christopher Small with 13.12 on the game-clock could have led to a Card Red ejection. Field player Rooney now has 45 out-field minutes, and 2 great goal-scores with zero assists in ManU’s fine performance – a great improvement on last season under long term coach Sir Davie Moyes. The famous set-up of English internationals from Old Trafford is now to face a sudden-death warm-up matching with spunky Real Madrid, the multi-time champion looking for another World Series ring. Veteran coach Bruce Arena placed two cornermen in the net-box to negate the Red Deviants at corner opportunities, but eventually Ryce Hames and the Young Ashley scored a brace apiece bearing heavy fruits in the final quarter. The Galaxy defense went ape on the 42nd when the ref whistled for a clear hand situation, resulting in leading scorer Rooney’s fine penalty opportunity, of which even Lord Bobby of Charlton would have been proud. Finally Young holed in from the loop for the final double score and the bird was flown. Now, 20-time Premier League Champion “U’s” will take on Spanish Champions AC Roma in the first of their final three games series for the Guiness World Champions League. England’s representatives will be hoping star offensive lineman Robert Van Persie will find his net form when he returns from World Series duty from the Netherlands and help to snatch the championship game for his fellow Dutchman, and new team owner, Lewis Van Gaal. Probably we will see, in the ball games this week, sophomore success Adrian Januzai hard up against other British hopeful Cashley Cole lended from Russian club Chelsea. Free agent Patricia Evra visited the squad on his way to Italian champs Juve before the game. But it was media celebrity - and also former Galaxy star - Davie Beckham who made a surprise visit to the Man U training camp this week. Becks, whose face is the most-sported pin in tournament merchandising stat-history, was .329 to the last and perhaps the Galaxy should have allowed one last chance for him to move within .026 of all-time net-shake in this pre-regular season warm-down. Becks, the former leader of Team England, and famous for converting set-plays, was originally lended from the Manchester Hot-Rods franchise in the 2007 summer semester. Freshman Reece Hames - known for landing big defensive hits – could now be used on wing-plays allied to rookie Luke Shaw, the summer’s big dollar signing from the South Hamptons. If both goaltenders Gea and Lingard can perform more smother-shuts during the series, the title may well be heading back to the City of Trafford Stadium. The International Soccer Series, a regional show based on Major League Soccer, concludes August 4 at the Grand Series finale in Miami. Then to the National EPL, where the boys from Trafford will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s opening fixture, when Team United sneaked one out against the English top opposition Swans Sea when Davie’s boys hit four into the shot-zone, earning bragging points for years to come.

Easy purchase off Ticketmaster. Did not attend Soccer Fest prior to game - mostly Man U fans. Would like to see more Galaxy gear available for purchase at venue.

    by Mauiii11 on 7/29/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

Very upset with the way the parking was planned! Because of how unorganized it made us late and got in until the 2nd half of the game. Amazed with the amount of people that were late.

Great game I'm told. Awful seats.

    by UKCookie666 on 7/28/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

The advertising boards behind the one goal were so high that those in front felt compelled to stand, so those behind, them, and those behind them... etc. I didn't see any of the game, but can tell you exactly what the back of this guy's head looks like and the shirt he was wearing, as that's all I saw all evening. I feel cheated out of $90 for a ticket and $30 for parking. What a rip off. I can sit in my garage with the light off at home and see the same amount of football.

    Great game. Horrible seating!

by Gustavones on 7/28/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

It was my first time at the Rose Bowl. I was excited and the game was very good for a friendly, with 7 goals. The only thing was that I chose a seta at the second row of the upper ring of the stadium and it is horrible. First because there are seats for handicaped and also regular ticket holders at the same height that impair your view more than 50% and as it is a pass for people, you have fans and salespeople passing in front of you all the time. With ths first 2 minutes of the game I moved to some empty seats way upper in the stadium....

Will never go to an event at the Rose Bowl again!!

    by Jchristine1117 on 7/28/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

It took over 5 hours to get from the San Diego to the Rose Bowl! Left SD at 3pm thinking 4.5 hours was plenty of time to get to the Rose Bowl. Besides typical LA traffic, which we accounted for, the main exit for the Rose Bowl was closed with no warning signs. We saw people get out of their cars on the freeway and run!! After finaling arriving at the Rose Bowl at 8pm we STILL had to pay $30 to park.. On a golf course, as in we were parked on the green! And had to walk almost a mile to get to the actual stadium. Paid $160 for tickets and didnt get to our seats until 53 minutes into the game THEN after the game was over, the parking ushers disappeared and it was a crazy mad house of people driving all over the golf course in a rush to get out. We waited about an hour before that craziness was over and we could even get in line to leave. Will never recommend/attend an event at the Rose Bowl !

    Terrible awful seats

by Anonymous on 7/28/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

I bought the tickets for my fiancé for his birthday. We got there early and were really enjoying all there was to do before the game and had so much fun then we get to our seats and I had gotten him awesome seats or so I thought front row behind the goal. However there were advertising boards so we had to stand no big deal until the people taking pictures and video were standing behind the boards. Even standing in my seat I was still unable to see the game. As a whole I would come back but I think the seats we purchased should have been blocked off and you should have been unable to purchase those seats. Because there was literally no sight to the field and the crowd behind us was mad we were standing and got rowdy and the cops had to be called to calm everyone down it was just a mess.

Game was lots of fun, once we got there. Parking management and attendants were awful at Rose Bowl and it took an hour for us to get parked from the time we paid! They had no idea what they were doing! Game itself was great, easy enough to find seats asking a stadium attendant, plenty of food and drink options. No rhyme or reason in parking exits after the games either, and no attendants we could see that were helping. Kind of a free-for-all with parking.

    Horrible Traffic Control

    by bammy17 on 7/28/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

I live about 20 miles away from the Rose Bowl. Took me more than 3 hours to be parked and finally reach my seat, which by then, I had already missed half the game. Just horrible. What a waste of money, never going to that venue again

    Chain Link Fence

by Notafanoftikitmaster on 7/28/14Rose Bowl - Pasadena

First time attending match at the rose bowl and will be my last. They had a chain link fence seperating a section of the seating. Watching a futbol match through a chain link fence is sub par. Have been to LA Galaxy matches at the HomeDepot center which was a much better viewing experience even with the sun in my eyes.
