I've been to at least one night of about 6 KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmases over the years and it's always a great show by a great lineup. It's a little unfortunate that the format has completely gone away from its original, slightly more toned down ("unplugged") sets by these bands. Might as well take out the "Almost Acoustic" part of its name. Heck, might as well take out the "Christmas" part too, since no band even played a Christmas song. It's fine though. There's nothing wrong with a rock show... but, I'm just sayin'.
Big thumbs down to the sound at the Gibson. Night 2, during Of Monsters And Men's set, some sort of Walkie Talkie interference came on and blew everyone's ears out. Props to the band for soldiering through that mess. But even beyond that, the levels just seemed way too high. I go to rock shows all the time and believe me, loud does not bother me, but when the LOUD affects the sound QUALITY, it sucks. Only about three of the bands were at levels, that the audience could understand what they were saying. It is even worse with bands that use a lot of electronic instrumentation (M83, Imagine Dragons, Alex Clare, etc...). Unfortunately, this complaint is pretty normal for shows at the Gibson shows. It's too bad too, because other than that, the venue is GREAT.
5 Stars for the show, 1 for the venue = 3 Stars.
