    Yamaguchi Skating Show

by KATsSilks on 9/12/17Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

Fabulous performance on ice with musical singer Lea! US pairs ice dance champions were tremendous and the male dancers each showed their personality on ice. Very touching to see Kristi Yamaguchi ice dance with her young daughter.

Felt like I was stuck in a 3 hour infomercial

by GTRChick on 11/28/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

20 years ago my mom and I went to see Kristi at the Blaisdell. It was an amazing show then! My mom, now in her 70's is still a huge figure skating fan, but she is ill. Her mobility is not so good and she has trouble sitting for a long time. Because of her condition she does not usually like to go out. But, I asked her if she would like to go to this show. Without hesitation she said Yes! I purchased 3 tickets (over $100 each) for her, myself and my 90 year old grandmother. She was so excited to go to the show! When it started there was a group performance after the opening act. Then the MC comes out and talks a bit about the charity. Fine, it was for charity, that's expected. Kristi came out to talk about the charity as well, fine. Now a skater comes out. Then another speech/PSA. Then another skater, followed by another speech/PSA. It felt like I was watching it on TV but couldn't change channels during the commercials. I understand this was for charity, but we contributed to it when we purchased our tickets. After the intermission I was hoping the show would flow better. But it was the same thing 1-2 skaters followed by more speeches/announcements/videos/PSA etc. My mom couldn't take it anymore about 3 hours in. So we left early. The performances were amazing! The skaters did a great job, several of them brought their babies out onto the ice which was adorable, Manoa DNA and Na Leo Pilimehana were excellent as well. But it was very hard to get into the show. There were too many stops and pauses to preach about the charity. As I said earlier, I understand the value and importance, but we paid for a show, not a lecture. I feel they should have gotten all the talking out of the way in the 1st half and just focused on the show for the 2nd half. They could have better utilized the video screen to show all the PSAs both before the show and during intermission. They could have looped them so the audience could have watched while waiting for the show to start. Not stop the show to watch them. Overall the show could have been great. The skaters and musicians did an excellent job. There was just too much stopping. It was hard to get into the groove of the show. There would be an exciting performance, then a lecture/speech. All the older people and kids around us were getting bored. In fact several people left before we did. The constant stopping made the show drag. 3+ hours is a little long for any show. But if it was non-stop excitement people would have been captivated. This show did not captivate. It had great potential, but fell flat. If Kristi comes back again I hope she will consider the dragging of the infomercial. We know it was for charity and we contributed by paying about $100 a person. Please give us a SHOW, not a LECTURE. You want to share a bit about the charity and your passion, that's great. But get it out of the way early and let us enjoy some world class skating. I was greatly disappointed. At least my mom got out of the house and had fun. I just wish it was more exciting.

    Kristi & Friends were unforgettable

by MCIM on 11/28/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

Kurt Browning really stole the show! Loved the skaters and it was a thrill to see so many olympic medalists in one venue.

Beautiful Show for a Great Cause!

    by TracyM09 on 11/26/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

Wow, what a truly beautiful skating and singing event! My family has always followed figure skating, holding our breath when our US skaters went for the Gold, and jumping for joy with every win! My Father always referred to Kristi Yamaguchi as "Sweet Cheeks," she was his favorite! We're putting one of her bobble head dolls by his picture! I liked all of the skaters but have a special place in my heart for Brian Boitano! He is such a powerfulully graceful skater! It was nice to see all the ladies with their girls, it is sill sad to watch Ekatarina without Sergei, however, we were very happy to see her daughter skate so well!! It was a terrific show that I'm sure we would attend if it came to Hawaii again!! The musical portion of the show was great too, Aidan (?) played that Uke so well I couldn't believe he was only 14!! Mania DNA was good and the Hula was beautiful! I haven't herd Na Leo in years, the sounded great and Kristi's daughter danced beautifully!!

    Champions on ice

    by asierra56 on 11/25/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

It was a great privilege to be able to see former Olympians and World Champions skating on ice. This was truly a memorable experience. Mahalo to Kristi and all the skaters who performed that night.

    Great performance vs. oversaturated marketing

by PrettyConflicted on 11/24/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

All the performances in this show were so fantastic, but I was floored by the unending plugs and promotions for Kristi Yamaguchi's charity for children's literacy. A video and a few lines throughout would have been acceptable, but to focus on the charity for 5-minute intervals multiple times throughout the night was just too much. As a nonprofit worker myself, I value the effort and the cause, but to oversaturate the audience with multiple videos felt insulting, like my time belongs to her promotions even though I paid for a ticket to a show that, to my knowledge, was not intended to contribute to her cause. Please take this review as a reflection of her time management and promotion choices, not a reflection of disinterest in her cause of choice. Also, the endless mother-daughter theme was not what I had expected. I'd pay double for less "We love Kristi" and skaters twirling around their infants and more skilled displays, especially from Meryl Davis, Charlie White and Kurt Browning. I'm not sure I would have purchased tickets if I knew this was a child-themed performance to solicit affluent parents.

Show was great but it would be nice to know ahead of time of the intermission. To have world class level of skaters performing is a once in a lifetime chance

    Spectacular Evening

    by TwoSiamese2 on 11/24/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

Music and skating were over the top wonderful. Too much of the show was devoted to supporting Kristi's Always Dream Foundation and recognizing sponsors. 50% less would have been more enjoyable if time was devoted to more skating. Loved the numbers which incorporated moms and their little ones.

    Far exceeded expectations!

    by DL59 on 11/24/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

The mixture of local Hawaiian artists and the fabulous skaters were a winning combination that kept our attention throughout. The talent displayed by all were awesome. My two young granddaughters enjoyed the entire show.

    Delightful and memorable

by kunitake on 11/24/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

This was a world class performance with so much talent. It was incredible to watch these figure skaters glide across the Blaisedell Arena. The crowd was particularly taken with the skaters' daughters who were brought on to the ice. It was also very unique to have local Hawaiian music featured throughout the program and also accompanying the figure skaters.

Too many things other than pro skating

by Skatingfans on 11/23/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

It is doubtful we would have attended had we known there would be so many speeches, films and politicians such as the governor's wife. It was much more of a fundraising event than a skating event.. The normal expensive Ticketmaster event is for an entertainment, not a fundraiser. It started almost 45 minutes late and then started with an amateur guitar player and children skating, then a few pros followed by intermission. All in all, not what we expected.

    Amazing Performances

by Happyinhonolulu on 11/23/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

The show was truly spectacular. The skaters and the incredible music were beyond my expectations. The vocal harmonies of Na Leo gave me chicken skin :) "Who stole the show? Kurt Browning. He was sensational!!!
