20 years ago my mom and I went to see Kristi at the Blaisdell. It was an amazing show then! My mom, now in her 70's is still a huge figure skating fan, but she is ill. Her mobility is not so good and she has trouble sitting for a long time. Because of her condition she does not usually like to go out. But, I asked her if she would like to go to this show. Without hesitation she said Yes! I purchased 3 tickets (over $100 each) for her, myself and my 90 year old grandmother.
She was so excited to go to the show!
When it started there was a group performance after the opening act. Then the MC comes out and talks a bit about the charity. Fine, it was for charity, that's expected. Kristi came out to talk about the charity as well, fine. Now a skater comes out. Then another speech/PSA. Then another skater, followed by another speech/PSA. It felt like I was watching it on TV but couldn't change channels during the commercials.
I understand this was for charity, but we contributed to it when we purchased our tickets. After the intermission I was hoping the show would flow better. But it was the same thing 1-2 skaters followed by more speeches/announcements/videos/PSA etc. My mom couldn't take it anymore about 3 hours in. So we left early. The performances were amazing! The skaters did a great job, several of them brought their babies out onto the ice which was adorable, Manoa DNA and Na Leo Pilimehana were excellent as well. But it was very hard to get into the show. There were too many stops and pauses to preach about the charity. As I said earlier, I understand the value and importance, but we paid for a show, not a lecture. I feel they should have gotten all the talking out of the way in the 1st half and just focused on the show for the 2nd half. They could have better utilized the video screen to show all the PSAs both before the show and during intermission. They could have looped them so the audience could have watched while waiting for the show to start. Not stop the show to watch them.
Overall the show could have been great. The skaters and musicians did an excellent job. There was just too much stopping. It was hard to get into the groove of the show. There would be an exciting performance, then a lecture/speech. All the older people and kids around us were getting bored. In fact several people left before we did. The constant stopping made the show drag. 3+ hours is a little long for any show. But if it was non-stop excitement people would have been captivated. This show did not captivate. It had great potential, but fell flat.
If Kristi comes back again I hope she will consider the dragging of the infomercial. We know it was for charity and we contributed by paying about $100 a person. Please give us a SHOW, not a LECTURE. You want to share a bit about the charity and your passion, that's great. But get it out of the way early and let us enjoy some world class skating. I was greatly disappointed. At least my mom got out of the house and had fun. I just wish it was more exciting.
