About

The multimedia project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider.  They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums.  By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic ssoundscapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations.  With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century.  Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from electro to hip hop, from techno to synthpop.

In their live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert,  Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.

Starting with the retrospective of their Catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. Bringing together music and perfomance art, their 3-D concerts are a true  "Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.”  The concert series at the MoMA was - among others - followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London, Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo, the Opera House in Sydney, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

In 2014 Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Exciting, not very human like - no pun intended

by Cavalcade on 3/24/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

I grew up on listening to Kraftwerk and I've seen them in concert before - they are amazing. This show sounded and looked amazing, especially in 3D. My only complaint about this show is that there was only seating, no dance floor and you couldn't get up close to the stage or closer to the speakers / music. I've never been to a concert where there is music that you clearly dance to and yet you aren't allowed. Being on the floor, as close to the stage and the band is what fans love to do - we like to be a part of the show and the energy. Kraftwerk when down in history playing a very classy show at the Disney Hall, but they forgot the most important thing - their fans - and that to me took the human element out of the concert. Still love them, just not a fan of this sit down format.

    awesome

One of the best shows I've been to recently. It wasn't so much a concert as an experience for the mind, vision and hearing.

    We fell asleep!

by Anonymous on 3/24/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Although the sound was amazing, it was not a show to watch sitting down. No one was able to dance it to move. It was great to see them but I would not recommend watching the show while sitting. It was more of a movie theatre setting. Listening to Kraftwerk in the dark in that setting made everyone fall asleep! It was disappointing. Try also ran out of 3D glasses so We watched half the show without te glasses. We had to get up and ask for the glasses because they had no system on how to get glasses for those who did not receive them at the door. I would not recommend this show at this venue.

The venue was confusing on the inside. Yes, Johnson has a name brand for public space architecture but function does not follow form here. Narrow hallways and confusing balcony entrances. Now for the show: Sound was great, nose bleed deflates the 3D image impact. And there must be a no picture / phone rule. I almost got into it with a guy two seats down who followed me out of the venue asking me if I wanted him to send me some pictures from the show. Spend more money on seats for this one.

    Kraftwerk Is Still a Powerhouse!

by Marathonwoman on 3/24/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

I used to listen to Kraftwerk band in the 1970s and they are as good as ever. I never thought that I would enjoy four guys standing at four keyboards so much. The multimedia 3D show was breathtaking. The old songs, such as Radioactivity, Autobahn, We Are the Robots, and more sounded as fresh as ever.

Great show! 3D is mindblowing if...

by EllAySeeAy on 3/23/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

I saw 3 of the 3D shows at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Here's the scoop: There is no opener, so be on time. If you are going to one of their 3D shows, sit as close to the middle of the screen as possible to maximize the 3D effect. This means, try to avoid the sides, and if the floor has an incline, it's better to sit a little higher than up in front row where you will need to look up at the screen. One night I was off to the side, and the sound was extremely loud with muddy bass. In the center, the sound was well balanced. My understanding is that Kraftwerk brings their own sound equipment and sound team, so I'd expect the same at other venues. I have now seen Kraftwerk a total of 5xs, and this is by far the best production I have seen. Finally, I purchased 3 shows from this series because my understanding was that they would play a different album at each show, and then play some of their hits at the end. This did not happen. I'm not sure what the set list were like in NYC, Germany, and London, but in LA, they did not play the albums as they were recorded. Whether you went to The Mix, Radioactivity, Computer World, Tour de France, etc, the songs were virtually the same, with the exception of one song for each of the shows I saw. For instance, on night one they played Neon Lights, but I never heard it again after that. Night two was Pocket Calculator, but that wasn't played on night one. Each night finished with "Musique Nonstop."

Kraftwerk live is always an unforgettable event!

by Arkablat on 3/23/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

I was seated off to the side of the stage, facing sideways, so I had to spend the show looking to the right. I was back far enough that the sound was good and the 3D projections worked well. Earlier in the evening I was at their other concert, seated too closely to the stage and the effects and sound were not as good. The curtain dropped and suddenly Kraftwerk were there, dressed in their Computerworld tights, manning electronic consoles lines with ever-changing lighting strips of color and pulsating lights. Although only Ralph Hutter remains of the original Kraftwerk lineup, they sounded fantastic and know what they're doing. Their performance is made up of pre-recorded sounds along with live keyboards and vocals. They played much more music than I had expected, with this performance lasting about 1 hour and 35 minutes.

    Once In a Lifetime

by ValleyChick on 3/23/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

I'm not a huge Kraftwerk fan, but I took my husband who is a total fan. Even though it was an electronic music show, each performer riffed while a 3-D film played in the background, which made for a cool live show. At Walt Disney Concert Hall, the acoustics were phenomenal. These guys are the godfathers of today's EDM, so it was a treat to see them live.

    Kraftwerk was AMAZING!

by Tobor111 on 3/23/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Words cannot describe how AMAZING it was to finally see Kraftwerk in concert and with 3D projected imagery!! BEST, BEST concert I have been to in a long time! I have always loved their forward thinking music and to see them live was a real treat for me personally. I got my 16 year old daughter into Kraftwerk a few years ago and I brought her to the concert with me and my fiance and she knew all the songs and from what album. We all had a blast!! Please, please come back to Southern California again!

I would love to see them again. I saw them about 30 years ago in Santa Monica. Hard to believe but they were better. The acoustics at Disney Center are great and the 3D digital display just added another dimension..... Having seen hundreds of concerts in my life this one will not be forgotten

    Kraftwerk - The Remixes

by Sushifreak on 3/23/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

This was an awesome compilation of their best tracks from a variety of their albums. The visuals were fun, and the sound was great. They sound just as "tight" as they did on their recordings... hard to believe they've been around since the 70s!

    All the hits

by mepeters79 on 3/23/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Fabulous show. They played all of the hits not just from Techno Pop, but also some of the standards: Autobahn, Tour de France, TransEurope Express....every song was flawless, and the 3D animation was super fun. Awesome awesome evening--so glad I got tickets!

    Kraftwerk: Still the kings.

by spacewars on 3/23/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Even at their worst (the Computer World show was plagued by a variety of bad voodoo problems; Video test patterns showing up on the screen by mistake along with computer windows, audio mix issues, bad monitoring causing one of the band members to take the unprecedented step of communicating with the monitor engineer during the performance), they're still streets ahead of anyone else in electronic pop, a genre they basically invented. There has never been a group with a more fully-developed, elegant, catchy and just plain irresistible overall aesthetic, from their personas to the music and lyrics and the visuals (both in concert and the album artwork.) The 3D component was a fun, flashy and novel addition to their always-evolving live show, as were the LED lights tied to the video. Brilliant.
