Knoxville Ice Bears at Knoxville Civic Coliseum
The Knoxville Ice Bears hit the ice for another exciting season in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Knoxville Ice Bears play out of the General James White Memorial Civic Auditorium and Coliseum (usually shortened to Knoxville Civic Coliseum), which opened in 1961 and has a capacity of 5,937. Coach Jeff Carr replaced Mike Craigen before the beginning of the 2017-18 season. The Ice Bears are one of five teams playing in the SPHL, including the Birmingham Bulls, the Huntsville Havoc, the Macon Mayhem and the Pensacola Ice Flyers.
History of the Knoxville Ice Bears
The Marble City has had a decades-long love affair with hockey, with the Knoxville Knights playing in the Eastern Hockey League from 1961 to 1968, and the Knoxville Cherokees of the East Coast Hockey League from 1988 to 1997. Mike Murray was the Cherokees’ all-time leader in points, goals and assists before becoming the Ice Bears’ general manager in 2006. The Knoxville Speed of the United Hockey League played from 1999 until 2002, after which the Ice Bears were founded as a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. After one season, the ACHL split into the SEHL (of which the Ice Bears were a member) and WHA 2, with the surviving teams from each league rejoining for the 2004-05 season as the Southern Professional Hockey League.
The Knoxville Ice Bears have been the most successful franchise by far in the SPHL, winning President’s Cup championships in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2015, and William B. Coffey trophies as the team with the best regular-season record in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. UFC fighter Scott “Hot Sauce” Holtzman, who hails from Knoxville, played two games with the Ice Bears in the 2007-08 season, before pursuing a career in mixed martial arts.
Unfortunately, the Ice Bears lost this game, but the wiener dogs won my heart. This hysterical mixture of tiny legs and ice made for the most enjoyable night ever. I will be attending every weiner dog race for the rest of my life.
Star Wars night with the Icebears was a memorable night for us! Kids and grandkids want to go back!
An Ice Bears game is a great time for the money. Not a bad seat in the house. Traffic and parking is easy in easy out.
This was our second Ice Bears game. Both games have been a blast!
Can’t pick the seats as desired. Awesome game. Go ice bears. But crappy seats when best selection picked. Best seats are closer to center of ice. Not away from it.
Even though the Knoxville Ice Bears lost, it was still a great experience. Plenty of fan interaction, even getting the kids involved for a fun run.
We had a great time. Ticketmaster made the whole evening very easy.
Our seats were supposed to be the "cheap ones" but there really are no bad seats for this event! We LOVED it

Those we’re the worst seats that I’ve ever had to sit in at a hockey game. You couldn’t pay me to sit in those seats again. The hockey itself seemed like semi-pro wrestling. Won’t be back sorry Bearcats.
Sit on the glass for this game and the seats are so comfortable if you sit down during intermission. Awesome place to watch a hockey game. Ushers and employees are super nice.
I took my girlfriend to see the Knoxville Ice Bears play against Evansville. It was our first game we've been to. I've always been a hockey fan, and I was so glad to have a local team we could go watch and root for. We had an amazing time, and we will definitely be back. The tickets were a really good value, and so were the concessions. We had a fantastic date night that was easy on the wallet.
My family and I enjoyed the Knoxville Ice Bears game at Knoxville Civic Center. Great time and prices were reasonable.
They always have something going on to keep you entertained. It is a great time and fun for all.

Had a great time. My husband and I really enjoyed it. It is a great activity to bring your family. They really try to make it fun for everyone. The only negative is the music/PA system was extemely loud. We had to scream at each other to try to hear each other. I understand loud but this was way to loud. But overall we had a great time, ran into friends and will do it again.
As always, we enjoyed the Ice Bears game on 10/13/17. They won in overtime! Security was exceptional! I appreciate the effort the city of Knoxville puts into the community it serves. I felt safe. I couldn't help but notice the Civic Auditorium could use a facelift. The black paint on the ceiling is peeling - badly. I noticed it last season, and the season before - and it's time, Knoxville. The lack of upkeep and visible peeling paint reflects poorly on our city.
