About Knoxville Ice Bears
Knoxville Ice Bears at Knoxville Civic Coliseum
The Knoxville Ice Bears hit the ice for another exciting season in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Knoxville Ice Bears play out of the General James White Memorial Civic Auditorium and Coliseum (usually shortened to Knoxville Civic Coliseum), which opened in 1961 and has a capacity of 5,937. Coach Jeff Carr replaced Mike Craigen before the beginning of the 2017-18 season. The Ice Bears are one of five teams playing in the SPHL, including the Birmingham Bulls, the Huntsville Havoc, the Macon Mayhem and the Pensacola Ice Flyers.
History of the Knoxville Ice Bears
The Marble City has had a decades-long love affair with hockey, with the Knoxville Knights playing in the Eastern Hockey League from 1961 to 1968, and the Knoxville Cherokees of the East Coast Hockey League from 1988 to 1997. Mike Murray was the Cherokees’ all-time leader in points, goals and assists before becoming the Ice Bears’ general manager in 2006. The Knoxville Speed of the United Hockey League played from 1999 until 2002, after which the Ice Bears were founded as a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. After one season, the ACHL split into the SEHL (of which the Ice Bears were a member) and WHA 2, with the surviving teams from each league rejoining for the 2004-05 season as the Southern Professional Hockey League.
The Knoxville Ice Bears have been the most successful franchise by far in the SPHL, winning President’s Cup championships in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2015, and William B. Coffey trophies as the team with the best regular-season record in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. UFC fighter Scott “Hot Sauce” Holtzman, who hails from Knoxville, played two games with the Ice Bears in the 2007-08 season, before pursuing a career in mixed martial arts.
Went to hockey game and had a good time. Met nice fans up there and we be going back.
Got GG. Limited view but overall a great experience. Don’t click in insurance. It charged me $40 even though it didn’t show at the end of my transaction.
Icebears games are our new favorite thing to do as a family...the announcer's voice is annoying, but not a deal breaker. Also, if you have trouble with stairs, stay away from the upper deck.
First hocky game for my family we loved it,we got tickets for another game before we left,Go Icebears.
First time going to a hockey game. Not everyone else's though. Some awesome hockey fans in the crowd yelling at the other team and referees. It was highly entertaining. They also had fun interactive moments throughout the game that kept littler kids entertained. The star deduction came from long lines waiting to pay for anything at the arena whether it was merch, popcorn, or beer. My husband spent almost an entire period waiting in line for popcorn for one of our kids. Another lady asked other customers behind her to put back her shirts, because she decided she didn't want to wait in line anymore. The other "complaint" I have is a more long-term issue: It seems that the arena is outdated with small wooden stadium seats. Could do with some renovations (but minor complaints over all)! In other words, I recommend this event!
First hockey game experience. Knoxville does sports right. Would definitely go again
I wish you would announce that the event is family friendly, and to please refrain from chanting curse words and vulgar language. I like to bring my grandchildren but I may not do so again because of the fan language.
Great seats, can't wait to come back. Drinks are a little pricey. But overall good experience
Wow!! What an amazing match between Ice Bears and Birmingham, although the Bears did not get a win they played their hearts out and gave it their all. It was our first time and to say we didn’t enjoy the breakout fights .. well would be an understatement! We loved everything about the match. Thanks for an exciting first time, we will definitely be back ❤️ P.s. The seats are more comfortable than the Seats at the Smashville arena! Go Ice Bears until next time… keep it cool 🥶
We are out of towners. The facility is decent. Food lines are excesively slow. The store area is located in a super awkward spot on a second floor hallway. Spectators always walking around/in front while game play is happening. Team play is great and quick though.
Always a great time, my whole family can enjoy! Kids that each game is always different.
Game was pretty awesomenand they won which made it even better! The seats were great 👍
My 2 Teenage Daughter’s and I enjoy going to the Ice Bears games. They make it a lot of fun for everyone.
I took my daughter and granddaughter to the game. It was entertaining and fun. The skill level is moderate but that’s to be expected. Go and have fun.
Such a great game and awesome athletes. Met the owner as well such a kind woman!
Actually felt sorry for the Ice Bears - it really seemed that they are extremely under funded. The venue is like 100 yrs old and if you closed your eyes long enough you could hear and smell the rodeo going on. I mean these guys are playing a sport they love and not getting the financial support they deserve. Of course, they do lack some talent but not heart or desire.
First time attending an Ice Bears game. Terrific service and accommodation by the Ice Bears staff. The atmosphere of game night and crowd enthusiasm made the experience special. The Ice Bears won 5-2. Great net minding by Poreda. Go see the Ice Bears play.
We had a great time at the IceBears game. But the venue really needs to improve concessions availability. It takes a ridiculous amount of time to get a beer & a hot dog.
Enjoyed the opening night game. This was our first time back in a few years and we had a wonderful time. Can’t wait till the Nov 4th game.
A great season. Sorry to see them get knocked out of the playoffs. Don’t want to let that overshadow a season of great games and wins.
