About Knoxville Ice Bears
Knoxville Ice Bears at Knoxville Civic Coliseum
The Knoxville Ice Bears hit the ice for another exciting season in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Knoxville Ice Bears play out of the General James White Memorial Civic Auditorium and Coliseum (usually shortened to Knoxville Civic Coliseum), which opened in 1961 and has a capacity of 5,937. Coach Jeff Carr replaced Mike Craigen before the beginning of the 2017-18 season. The Ice Bears are one of five teams playing in the SPHL, including the Birmingham Bulls, the Huntsville Havoc, the Macon Mayhem and the Pensacola Ice Flyers.
History of the Knoxville Ice Bears
The Marble City has had a decades-long love affair with hockey, with the Knoxville Knights playing in the Eastern Hockey League from 1961 to 1968, and the Knoxville Cherokees of the East Coast Hockey League from 1988 to 1997. Mike Murray was the Cherokees’ all-time leader in points, goals and assists before becoming the Ice Bears’ general manager in 2006. The Knoxville Speed of the United Hockey League played from 1999 until 2002, after which the Ice Bears were founded as a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. After one season, the ACHL split into the SEHL (of which the Ice Bears were a member) and WHA 2, with the surviving teams from each league rejoining for the 2004-05 season as the Southern Professional Hockey League.
The Knoxville Ice Bears have been the most successful franchise by far in the SPHL, winning President’s Cup championships in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2015, and William B. Coffey trophies as the team with the best regular-season record in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. UFC fighter Scott “Hot Sauce” Holtzman, who hails from Knoxville, played two games with the Ice Bears in the 2007-08 season, before pursuing a career in mixed martial arts.
It was my son’s first hockey game and he loved it! We had a great time!
I had an amazing experience booking my tickets online. My seats were simply amazing! I will continue to use Ticketmaster.
Love the venue. Not a bad seat in the house. Great barn! Intermission entertainment was fun too. Very family-friendly environment. Concession offerings were good as well, but no pizza to be found anywhere in the place. Gotta have pizza available at the game!
The coach needs to do better with coaching his players when they miss passes and pulling the goalie when to many goals are let in. The arena is outdated with poor and old seating. There is a positive though and that is that the food is good
Definitely a down year for the Bears. Seats were ok and the event was fun but the hockey could have been better.
The Knoxville Coliseum is a great venue for a hockey game! Unobstructed views and comfortable seats. The food was pretty good as well, and decently priced. We had a good time at the game and we'll definitely go again!
Everything went so smoothly. We were able to purchase tickets and a parking pass right off the app, and had no problem getting into the parking garage and stadium. The team wasn’t as competitive as we had hoped, but we got to see a fight and our seats were great!
We had a fantastic time. Great atmosphere and great game!
No energy in the arena for the game. Season ticket holders surround the ice and didn’t seem interested in the game. Players had no passion to play and acted like “pay me so I can go home”. Really sad. We drove 2 hours to the game and left wishing we hadn’t. People were more interested in Star Wars night than the game. So were the players. I will say, great merchandise! They have that down. Teams could learn from them on that. Food was overpriced. $25 for popcorn?!?! $15 for a Coke. Ridiculous. Really a very disappointing weekend.
Love watching the ice bears but a few things. After our first game it should be mentioned that the one end has limited viewing. Second the main gate can get overwhelmed. And finally we usually eat out before a game because the menu options inside is pretty basic.
I will not be back this year or maybe ever. The way the team played is a joke. 11 game losing streak this season. Good luck keeping the team in Knoxville. Knoxville cannot keep the ice rink ice cold and the players don't even know how to skate with the puck
This was our first time attending an Ice bears game or hockey game in general. It was a fun time and enjoyable experience, will definitely go again. The only feedback is the seating in lower arena by the glass could use better signage for guests to find there seats more easily, several folks had trouble finding there seats.
The kids and I had a blast. Will be back. Soon soon soon soon
We sat behind one of the goals and it overhangs so that you can’t even see what is going on for that end. We just moved to open seats somewhere else but other than that, awesome experience.
This was my first hockey game and I will definitely be attending another one. It was great!!!
The Civic Colosseum is a good place to see a hockey game. No bad seats. The game is fast. There were a lot of goals scored 9 but unfortunately the Ice Bears didn’t have a good night. It was still fun because they played hard. We had a good time!
We've been to countless hockey games and I was rather disappointed that TMaster allowed our whole section of seats to be sold. Granted there was a caveat that said limited view possible, we were in sections behind the nets (where my son loves to sit), and we missed all the action underneath us. You could see the skilled play, build-up, and then the shot, rebounds, or any battles behind the net. I was thoroughly disappointed and did not enjoy my experience. As I looked to relocate my seat for a better view, it was apparent that any sections behind the net were obstructed (regardless of row seat, ie. JJ).
It was really fun. Good seats. Not expensive. The hockey was competitive. Unfortunately ice bears lost. But overall it was a fun experience
First time seeing the Knoxville Ice Bears and 1st Hockey game ever and I will go back..
We were really hoping for a reasonably fun time. What we experienced far surpassed our hopes. Crowd was really into the game. The team got down early but made an incredible comeback. These young men deserve our support!
