About Knoxville Ice Bears

Knoxville Ice Bears at Knoxville Civic Coliseum

The Knoxville Ice Bears hit the ice for another exciting season in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The Knoxville Ice Bears play out of the General James White Memorial Civic Auditorium and Coliseum (usually shortened to Knoxville Civic Coliseum), which opened in 1961 and has a capacity of 5,937. Coach Jeff Carr replaced Mike Craigen before the beginning of the 2017-18 season. The Ice Bears are one of five teams playing in the SPHL, including the Birmingham Bulls, the Huntsville Havoc, the Macon Mayhem and the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

History of the Knoxville Ice Bears

The Marble City has had a decades-long love affair with hockey, with the Knoxville Knights playing in the Eastern Hockey League from 1961 to 1968, and the Knoxville Cherokees of the East Coast Hockey League from 1988 to 1997. Mike Murray was the Cherokees’ all-time leader in points, goals and assists before becoming the Ice Bears’ general manager in 2006. The Knoxville Speed of the United Hockey League played from 1999 until 2002, after which the Ice Bears were founded as a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. After one season, the ACHL split into the SEHL (of which the Ice Bears were a member) and WHA 2, with the surviving teams from each league rejoining for the 2004-05 season as the Southern Professional Hockey League.

The Knoxville Ice Bears have been the most successful franchise by far in the SPHL, winning President’s Cup championships in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2015, and William B. Coffey trophies as the team with the best regular-season record in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. UFC fighter Scott “Hot Sauce” Holtzman, who hails from Knoxville, played two games with the Ice Bears in the 2007-08 season, before pursuing a career in mixed martial arts.

Great experience, can’t see from the seats.

by Tanner on 1/15/24Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

We sat behind one of the goals and it overhangs so that you can’t even see what is going on for that end. We just moved to open seats somewhere else but other than that, awesome experience.

    We Had Fun

by Eddie on 1/1/24Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

The Civic Colosseum is a good place to see a hockey game. No bad seats. The game is fast. There were a lot of goals scored 9 but unfortunately the Ice Bears didn’t have a good night. It was still fun because they played hard. We had a good time!

    Nice venue, but horrible seats!

by Suz on 1/1/24Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

We've been to countless hockey games and I was rather disappointed that TMaster allowed our whole section of seats to be sold. Granted there was a caveat that said limited view possible, we were in sections behind the nets (where my son loves to sit), and we missed all the action underneath us. You could see the skilled play, build-up, and then the shot, rebounds, or any battles behind the net. I was thoroughly disappointed and did not enjoy my experience. As I looked to relocate my seat for a better view, it was apparent that any sections behind the net were obstructed (regardless of row seat, ie. JJ).

    Coliseum was rocking

by Joe on 11/25/23Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

We were really hoping for a reasonably fun time. What we experienced far surpassed our hopes. Crowd was really into the game. The team got down early but made an incredible comeback. These young men deserve our support!

by Bearfan on 10/31/23Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

You need more fan interaction more places to purchase food and merchandise the lines were way backed up and more to do with whatever night it is you did Hockey Top hardly any Tennessee stuff went down and get some better players in there the only thing we looked good at was fighting our hockey looked little league

    Needs much improvement

by DP on 10/30/23Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

This game was very disappointing. Hopefully Mike Murray will find new players that can actually play hockey. We hope when we return to the following games that the players names in the program will change. We need to have a winning season!! GO ICEBEARS!!

    Fitting Finale

by Buck on 4/17/23Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

Grandson enjoyed what became final game of the season. Not as exciting as normal. Both teams played "tired". Overall, this sport and it's presentation is excellent family fun.

    Trek into "Enemy" territory

    by D. H. on 4/17/23Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

Came to Knoxville to support the Huntsville Havoc Hockey Club in the Playoffs, Game 2. Tickets and Parking paid through Ticketmaster. Civic Auditorium was easy to access with parking across the street in the parking deck. Parking staff was very friendly and prepared for digital ticket access. Went to the Auditorium complex and entered the security screening outside the venue. Easy process, no waiting. Once inside, found staff member who pointed us in the right direction of seats, restrooms, and concessions. Seats were great! Near the glass! After the game, we had access to the players leaving the Ice and heading to the dressing rooms. Fantastic experience. Although the venue is older, everything was clean and the people friendly, even though Knoxville lost. Thumbs Up from me!

    fun night

by Chris on 3/29/23Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

Ice bears go all out to entertain. Their management works hard to make it a great experience for the fans and goes out of their way to keep the kids involved. Good job, Ice Bears!

    Nightmare in Knoxville

by Flash on 3/20/23Knoxville Civic Coliseum - Knoxville

The game was on the same night as the St. Patricks Day Parade, so every road to the venue for the Ice Bears was blocked except one! So guess what that meant. Stopped traffic that took over an hour to go one mile!! So everyone missed the start and then afterwards, the roads were still blocked! What part of the game we could see was okay except my tickets were on the opposite side of the arena then what I've booked in the past. Lines to get anything to drink or eat took forever!!!

    We had a great time

Very entertaining. Game was fast and fun to watch. The staff kept your attention with something else going on during any breaks in game action. We will be going back.
