KING CRIMSON IN CONCERT:

You can't keep a good band down -- legendary prog rock pioneers King Crimson ended a five-year hiatus in 2014 with the announcement of a fall US tour. The group has called it quits several times over the decades, but their love of music and passion for performing always bring them back to the stage. The band's current lineup -- its eighth since 1969 -- includes founder and primary creative force Robert Fripp alongside three drummers, two guitar players, and a flutist-saxophonist. Beloved for their virtuosic musicianship and extended live jamming, the veteran performers will take fans on an unforgettable musical journey through their hallowed discography on their An Evening with King Crimson tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

King Crimson was formed in Dorset, UK in 1968 by guitarist Robert Fripp and brothers Michael and Peter Giles. The band's acclaimed 1969 debut In the Court of the Crimson King established what would become the hallmarks of British progressive rock, with its emphasis on instrumental expertise, use of vanguard musical technologies, and fusion of rock forms with classical and jazz styles. By the time they released their 1970 sophomore album In the Wake of Poseidon the band had already undergone the first of many lineup changes, but despite the shakeup the album still landed at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. In the decades that followed, King Crimson's rotating roster of players produced an impressive string of Top 40 albums, establishing them as one of the era's most revered progressive rock acts. Despite several hiatuses over the years, the band continues to reunite for occasional albums and tours. Robert Fripp and Co. thrilled fans once again in 2014 with the announcement of An Evening with Crimson, their highly anticipated fall US tour.

    tight, tight, tight

by mikeso on 9/25/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

true pros, every member on stage. the mix of all eras of KingC songs blended together well, and they were well-synced with each other. must have been a lot of rehearsal to get the sets so tight...better than the albums! Wish I had binoculars to see Fripp's hands and Levin's fingers playing the chapmann stick!

    King Crimson blew me away

by TheRealMrsPotatoHead on 9/22/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I was a little worried about what we would and wouldn't hear. I knew that anything they played, even if once a studio recorded song, would not sound like anything I had heard before. Fripp seems to try and reboot the band every decade. This was absolutely incredible. A mixture of older songs, more recent songs, brand new songs, and medlies. Did not include much of Belew albums (other than Thrak), but if you're into the older stuff and they're coming to one of your cities, GET THERE !

    Greatest 'Hits' Show

by spac3m0nk3y on 9/20/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I expected this show to be all new material based on articles I read prior to attendance. Instead this show turned out to all old material which is actually better in some ways than new material since I really love King Crimson's first few albums above all. I've seen King Crimson once before during their Construction of Light tour. It was a good show was good if you liked the album. I remember wishing they played more old stuff. In this current lineup of Tony Levin, Gavin Harrison, Mel Collins, Bill Rieflin, Robert Fripp, Pat Mastelotto, Jakko Jakszyk, they didn't play a single new song. Since King Crimson is know for their technical prowess as musicians, there's no need to discuss how tight they are as a band (at least when I've seen them). If you're a King Crimson fan, don't miss them on this tour.

    Their Greatest Songs

by spac3m0nk3y on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I expected this show to be new music by King Crimson but instead they played songs from their entire history. This was a welcome and unexpected change of plans! It goes without saying all of the musicians are at the top of their game including their three drummers -- Pat Mastelotto, Bill Rieflin, and Gavin Harrison. Being a huge fan of Porcupine Tree I was pleased to see Gavin Harrison play with a band only few drummers could deal with. The Colonial Theater is a an old time, baroque establishment reminiscent of an opera house.

    Everything I was hoping for

by JonB67 on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

King Crimson has a reputation for delivering some serious musical goods, and this show was no exception. The performance was stunning from start to finish and spot on at every turn. The new lineup and stage set-up was fun and interesting, and allowed the band to play a wide variety of songs from throughout the King's career. All in all, I could not have asked for more.

Missing a strong vocal, like Belew or Wetton, but otherwise KCr at it's best. Tree drummers/percussionists!

I never thought I would this would happen

by nparula on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I've been going to Robert Fripp performances for 35 years; some amazing, some thought provoking, one I walked out of. To be a Fripp fan is a challenge, since he's not so interested in pleasing audiences as in bringing them along in his intellectual musical journey. I'm just a little too young (56) to have been a fan and seen King Crimson in their meaty prime years of the early to mid seventies, (if they even played in Boston then) and lamented that some of the best, most intense, soul searing music of all time would fade away. Since the demise of the Fripp/Whetton/Bruford band in 1975, Fripp seemed quite uninterested in resurrecting any of this, his best material for reasons we can only guess at. The grateful audience yelled "Thank you Robert" several times as the band indulged us with the heaviest material from the albums "Red" and "Larks Tongues in Aspic". The intensity was overwhelming as I kept saying to myself "I can't believe this is happening. This is truly a dream come true!" And we all watched in awe as this little old guy and a bunch of almost as old guys made it happen with the same precision and intensity but with creative new elements to give it freshness. It was as if after 40 years Fripp decided "Oh why not let them have it after all." I was psyched to see many young faces in the audience though the average age was around 50. I have talked to young musicians in their teens and twenties who are big King Crimson fans and I am glad that it now seems to be getting recognition from a new generation.

King Crimson blew my mind and my ear drums!

by hotrat28 on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I have seen King Crimson several times over the years but that was perhaps the best show I have seen, by them or anyone else. The three-drummer attack was incredible. The whole band was amazing, but Tony Levin and Gavin Harrison really stood out as the two best musicians on the stage. Robert Fripp was incredible as well. As I said to my wife when I got home, I could see that exact same show every night and not get tired of it. Level 5, Larks Tounge in Aspic II, the drums intro. to 21 Century Schizoid Man, Starless, and Talking Drum were all incredible. I hope that this lineup continues to tour beyond their current dates because I definitely want to see them again.

    King Crimson -chaotic precision

Three drummers! Bass line stiches together chaotic notes -like following the bouncing ball. Crazy talent in one room brewing up brilliance like a bunch of scientists.

    Amazing

by LorenzoDiLeveretto on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I've attended several King Crimson shows over the last thirty (yes, thirty) years. The show in Boston was perhaps the most incredible, creative and unforgettable show I've ever seen. This version of the band was cohesive, precise and energetic, with too many brilliant moments to count. They played steadily for almost two hours, then came back for a wonderful Schizoid Man encore. My only regret is that I couldn't return the following night for the second show.

    Crimson Rocked It

by DFW2010 on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

The King Crimson show was awesome! I haven’t been a fan over the years, except for wearing out a copy of Discipline when I was in college. I’ve always liked Robert Fripp though, especially his work with David Bowie. When I saw they were coming to Boston, I bought tickets and started listening to them again. Wow, what I’ve been missing. The show was nothing less than perfect. The band played with precision and a ton of energy. They played a good cross section of their catalog (except anything from Discipline!) I’d highly recommend anyone seeing them. They are true musicians.

    Note-Perfect Theatre Show

by stalkingthreateningmenace on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

A sprinkling of unfamiliar pieces in a box of magic tricks like going to a annual Chinese New Year fireworks display Bobby ought to be sure not to clone himself this way however....all the musicians seemed to be working at a dupe presentation. A lack of Belew bizarrity action invention

    You can't beat three drummers!

by MMSinYorkMaine on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

Robert Fripp is a guitar deity. That should be reason enough to go see him play. This time out he's collected some new faces as well as some old. The band performed many of my favorite KC pieces, from "Lark's Tongues in Aspic" to "Starless" . Incredibly talented musicians improvising in a progressive rock setting makes for a truly entertaining experience.

    Amazing to see and hear!

by WhinyMcGee on 9/19/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I should probably give the show five stars, but I'm a fan of Adrian Belew's tenure in the band, so I was kind of bummed that he wasn't a part of this incarnation. I've been a casual fan of King Crimson for a number of years, so it was a real treat to finally see them perform live. Watching how the seven-member band works together, interacting and playing off each other, was wonderful to watch (including three percussionists!) I really could have watched them play twice as long.

    incredible!

by raisedonZappa on 9/18/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

I was raised on progressive rock, King crimson being a staple in that daily dose of music in our home. I was blown away at the concert Monday night, the band was phenominal, the sound was perfect, and the venue was the perfect setting for them to play. Possibly the best display of musicianship, showmanship, and all around awesomeness that I have ever witnessed!!!

    King Crimson...'nuff said

by dafYole on 9/18/14Citi Performing Arts Center Emerson Colonial Theatre - Boston

Was expecting to see a great show and got a stupendous show instead. While I am a big fan, I have never had the opportunity to see King Crimson live until this line-up performed...boy have I been missing out. I have seen Tony Levin a few times with Peter Gabriel, so I knew the bar was going to be set pretty high on the talent meter, but boy was I blown away - not too often where you get to see one or two world-class musicians show you how its done - but we all got to see seven of the best of the best deliver an awe inspiring night of music.
