About

Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Houston, Texas, formed in 2009 with Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar and Donald Johnson on drums. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. By the summer of 2019, the trio had been on tour for nearly three-and-a-half years, playing to audiences across North and South America, Europe, and southeast Asia behind its acclaimed albums The Universe Smiles Upon You, Con Todo El Mundo, and Mordechai. Garnering glowing praise from The New York Times, W Magazine, Billboard, The Los Angeles Times, The FADER, Khruangbin released their very first remix album, Mordechai Remixes, on Dead Oceans, in association with Night Time Stories, Ltd in 2021. Each remixer on Mordechai Remixes has a musical or cosmic connection to Khruangbin and remixers included Kadhja Bonet, Ginger Root, Knxwledge, Natasha Diggs, Soul Clap, Quantic, Felix Dickinson, Ron Trent, Mang Dynasty, Harvey Sutherland. Khruangbin worked with Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriter Leon Bridges, from Ft. Worth, for two groundbreaking collaborative EPs, Texas Sun & Texas Moon. Further extending the lone star state's sonic possibilities, the sister EPs pensively examines Texas' musical perception, while paying homage to the marriage of country and R&B that's become synonymous with the region.

    a spiritual experience

by Nolie on 12/7/21Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Khruangbin put on a stellar show! I would hire them to play at my wedding! Could not stop smiling and dancing! I actually called some friends in different cities telling them that they have to go see them when they come thru! Will see them again and again any chance I get! They were beyond amazing!

Audio mix was bass heavy. couldn't hear the rest of the band

by Andrew on 11/14/21Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU - San Diego

I discovered Khruangbin during covid and this was my first concert back, I was excited so I splurged on seats up front, nearly $400 for two seats. They're amazing, I've listened to their albums over and over. This concert on the other hand, not amazing. I saw the drummer on stage, I saw the guy with the guitar... but I only heard the woman playing bass. All the intricacies of the guitar, all the technicality of the drums were totally drown out. The drummer was only barely audible over the continuous thumping bass. Every single song. Literally the only time where I could hear the guitar was the encore, because she didn't play the bass for the first half of it. I thought it might have been the ear plugs I was using, so I took them out. No improvement. I thought it may have been where I was seated, so I decided to get up and walked all around the venue, I walked by the sound board, I walked up by the merch booth and snack bar and it didn't improve. Just the constant thump of the bass. This was the first concert where I emailed the band from my seat to tell them how bad the sound was. This was the first concert in my life where I left disappointed and angry.

    First Cal Coast show

by Taco on 11/11/21Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU - San Diego

This was my first concert at Cal Coast, and I was impressed. I love the outdoor setting, it reminds of the Santa Barbara bowl. The sound and lighting were on point. Both bands sounded really good. My only complaint, and this is a pretty common concert complaint, was the long lines for swag, beers and bathrooms.

Good times grooving to the beats. Hot licks on the guitar with sultry bass lines driving the sounds.

    Kruangbin rocks Portland!

by 40 Grit on 6/24/19State Theatre - Portland

This was by far one of the best shows i have ever seen! Both bands were incredible. Kikagaku Moyo opened with an incredible set that left the audience eager for more. I dont think anyone moved an inch in intermission. Kruangbin was unbelievably talented and rocked the crowd at a sold out State Theatre, and topped it with the encore. This was one of my favorite concerts in my life and will always be a great memory!!

    Great show!

    by N8 on 6/24/19State Theatre - Portland

The band was fantastic (great showmanship and playing), the lights were cool, the opening band was also great, and everyone seemed to have a great time. It is the loudest cheering and applause I have ever heard for a band playing at the State. The sound system was a muffled and low-mid heavy, it was hard to make out the vocals for both bands and we tried moving to different places in the auditorium.

    Great Music, Awful Lighting

    by J. L. on 6/24/19State Theatre - Portland

As expected, the band was great. That said, they used moving spotlights that pointed directly into the audience, blinding us every 12 seconds or so. Watched people affected literally clear their seats to escape the intense lights. Fix that, and 5 stars. Great opening band.

very good music, very talented musicians

by jAEKOBUSmAXIMUS on 4/27/17Larimer Lounge - Denver

I love listening to Khraungbin both on the stereo and in person. If you're looking for good chill easy-listening and fun music, you've found it. If you're looking for showmanship, then you're not really paying attention to the music, you're looking for entertainment. I suppose you could say that's part of being a musician, but I think being a musician and an entertainer are two different things. Their outfits are pretty fun, too. Either way, for being a mostly unknown band, they are loved by their fans. Love their music and can't wait for more!

Khruangbin - great music, "eh" show

by LESMiss on 9/12/16Bowery Ballroom - New York

While the music is great - the stage show needs a little work. Not a lot of showmanship. Seemed like they were just pretty much just playing their songs - nothing special about seeing them live vs. recordings. Outfits good. :) Though they did try a bit, banter was "eh" - maybe even less than "eh" - like stood out to me as "not good", trying too hard for some reason and performance was "eh".

Khruangbin at Rough Trade was Awesome!

by Bizyguy76 on 3/18/16Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn

First the venue was great. It was packed but not overly packed. The sound was great, sounds like a big garage band feel. Great sound and atmosphere. Khruangbin was amazing. All 3 has a great chemistry on stage, they played off of each other and the audience. The guitars are amazing. The background imagery was also great, nice addition to the stage. If you're into great guitar and great sound, Khruangbin is where it's at. Pick up their music, now!
