About The Kentucky Derby

Sports institutions don't get much more classic than The Kentucky Derby, one of the oldest and most popular sporting events in the world. Crowds well in excess of 150,000 turn out every year on the first Saturday in May to watch this thoroughbred stakes race, taking part in a piece of American history.

Lovers of the racing, the excitement, and the pageantry have been turning out to see The Kentucky Derby every year since 1875. That's when Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. (grandson of legendary explorer William Clark) first brought the finest horses around to race at a new track in Louisville, Kentucky, that would later be dubbed Churchill Downs.

Ever since then, no matter what else was going on in the country — The Great Depression, World War I, World War II, or any other calamity — The Kentucky Derby went on, an irreplaceable part of the fabric of American life. Over the years, an entire culture has grown up around the race affectionately known as The Run for the Roses. Racegoers enjoy traditional mint juleps and burgoo stew to the playing of "My Old Kentucky Home," while the ladies show off lavish derby hats.

There's no thrill quite like the one that happens when you're watching world-class horses and jockeys work their way across the track on what has come to be widely known as "the most exciting two minutes in sports."

Naturally, the Derby tradition is rich with legendary jockeys — including record-breakers like Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack — and historic horses like Old Rosebud, Whirlaway, and Secretariat. More contemporary winners like Mike E. Smith on Justify and Victor Espinoza on American Pharoah carry the torch forward, bringing the best of horse racing to one of the world's most fabulously fun athletic events year after year.

    It is history!

    by gymteacher12 on 5/11/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

The horses, the hats, the people watching, the history and tradition of the event all meld together in a great fun filled day! It is a rain or shine event and we experienced both in the same day. It is great that you can bring in food and soda and water (check out website for things you can bring in) so we saved a lot of money that way!

    Great people

by Gamesace on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

Go for the people! Great time meeting many people all dressed up and sharing the event. Churchill downs can use help! We sat at the top of the stretch and the was no way see the horses that finished the race. The big screen only showed the winning horse but did not show the order of finish of any other of the horses. Tough to bet exacters and trifectas and see if you won. There was many cracked speakers on the lower level. Nothing worse than loud music with cracked speakers. The TV monitors were not working half the day during the Kentucky Oaks! Lower level was filthy! The garbage pails were full so there was mounds of debris next to them. (Hire some extra people) you certainly charge enough! Betting was a chalange! They could use some signs to help novice and beginner betters to use betting lingo to speed up the betting lines.

by Anonymous on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

This was the 2nd year my fiance and I attended the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. It is truly an amazing event to attend. From the races , the crowds, the emotions, to the ambience, the Kentucky Oaks and Derby are memories that we will forever remember and continue to make as we plan for the years coming.

This is a bucket list event for my husband and I and it did not disappoint! The whole event is a site to behold, not just the two-minute race. Great history, people watching and racing! We are already planning a return visit.

    Better than expected

by AmericanTraveler on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

We anticipated grass and mud but much was brick. Lines for betting were horrendous and most people know nothing about horseracing so they move slowly. Plenty of room for all, of course cannot see nothing but if lucky the tops of horses as they race by for one second if you're up close to a fence, the paddock area is at least 6 people deep so one must be patient through the races and wait there for rotation of front line people if that's important to you. Disappointed in souveniers, mint julep $11 in plastic black cup on infield and $13 for one in a glass at the stadium. Parked $20 away from gates, 10:30 am lines long to get in with microphoned 'noise' yelling scripture - sure headache and I'm a believer. Remember there are 2 tunnels: entry to the infield and once in not far down is another to the right to take you to the paddock area. No regrets but will try stadium next time - perhaps less cigar smoke and people who can't handle their drinking. Only 2 f words the whole day.

    Kentucky Derby is fantastic

    by Carrie5575 on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

People watching is amazing. Horse races are inspiring. Who doesn't love a good hat? The infield has become much tamer over the years so you shouldn't hesitate going here if its all you can afford (like me). They allow lawn chairs, food, and there's plenty of room for everyone.

    All in the pictures

by Anonymous on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

Unless you can afford actual seats, $300-$3000, don't bother! General admission at the derby is like the biggest frat party you have ever seen at the dirtiest state fair you can imagine. You will have cigar smoke in you face and alcoholic beverages thrown all over you . You won't see the track or a horse and there aren't even benches to rest on. This was a huge waste of my hard earned money.Apparently all of the glamour and prestige are camera tricks

    Will be back

by Anonymous on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

Got tickets with some other friends who went last year and said that the Infield was the spot to be. Ticket was only around $60 but I got mine later as they raise the prices as the race gets closer. A huge sea of girls in dresses and pastel shirts everywhere along with some characters. Drinks were what I expected them to be. Would say they are just under ball park prices for beer and mixed drinks. They added a ton of betting windows and waiting in line to bet took no more than 10 minutes at the peak. It poured on us for about 20 minutes but was still definitely worth it as the sun came out right after. Will probably figure out a way to do it better next year but for the first time going I would give it a positive experience.

    Coming back again next year

by Macosarus on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

The Derby had been on my list of things to see and do for a long time. Finally made it and it exceeded every expectation. It can only be described as a spectacle. It would be great fun to go even if the horses weren't racing just for the overall atmosphere.

To many people in a small area

    by Dorygirl22 on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

If I had the $150 + a ticket to sit in the seats .... It would of been much better . We purchased Infield tickets ... A HUGE drunk feast with the F BOMB & TRASH everywhere !!! Was disappointed with the big fair atmosphere .. My idea of a 142 year tradition is respect for the sport & NOT a huge drunk fest ! I'm no prude ...but out if control ...

    Kentucky derby

by Stlman on 5/10/16Churchill Downs - Louisville

Overall the event was absolutely fantastic the only thing I would criticize was the lines at the betting windows. This is my fourth Derby and never have I had to wait to place a bet as long as I did at this one I went up to the window one time waited 45 minutes missed two races and when I got to the window the attendant went on break and they had nobody to step in and fill her spot and I had to go back and stand in line all over again because nobody would let me cut. Going back to cash out after the race was equally as grilling and painful went with a group of friends and I basically spent very little time being able to sit with them because of the lines. The online betting site is based on an Apple only app and since I have an Android I was not able to download the app. My suggestion is that they need to make the betting lines more available and more efficient and staffed with more people I cannot imagine how much money they must have lost out on because people couldn't get their bets placed.
