Keep The Faith and Pass the Chloraseptic
by Docschlac on 5/3/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5Perhaps it was the Senators loss just before the show that seemed to dim the group’s enthusiasm (minus her bounding gleefully onto the stage at the opening) from many previous shows of hers that I’ve seen (including a raucous good time at the Beachcomber in Wellfleet, MA a while back), but the show went on, the crowd loved her and gave her space to rail and reveal. Though at times during the show, she seemed preoccupied with some personal issues that have been bothering her (for some time, it would seem), Kathleen and band put on another excellent show in support of her equally excellent Voyageur album. From what she has described as some gruelling touring that has caused her vocal concern, I'm glad she decided to keep the Boston show on the books after having to postpone some others. I wasn't hearing the "problems" she was describing with her voice as I thought she sounded strong and confident from the outset, though she may have convinced herself that her voice was faltering as the show progressed, as I noticed some minor vocal hiccups. But that's rock and roll (and could be allergies - I've had an oyster in my throat for a couple of weeks) and she still killed everything she sang; she has such a wonderful, expressive voice. I might suggest that the yelling/screaming she does in a couple of places for emphasis be toned down to preserve her vocals if she’s really concerned that she’s losing parts of her range, but she is a rocker at heart and the catharsis is a hard thing to give up. “A Soft Place to Land” and “For The Record” stood out for me, but she and her mates could rock the phonebook. Both guitarists are talented and played some clean, dynamic leads without showing off. When Kathleen gets more comfortable with her unarguable talent as a singer and songwriter and her natural beauty (I personally love frizzy hair though my wife backs Kathleen's perspective), maybe she won’t sweat the anxieties of life so much and just relax and enjoy her ride as a very talented human being. She has a long road ahead of her and a lot of fans that hope she carries on. And there’s always next year for the Senators (and Bruins).
