About

Kate Nash was born in 1987 in Dublin and grew up in northwest London. An aspiring actress in her youth, Kate studied drama at the London BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology. A twist of fate in the form of a broken foot left her bedridden and while incapacitated she revisited some unfinished songs she'd written when she was younger. Convinced of their quality, she gigged for a while and published some of her material on MySpace, including the track that shot her to fame, “Caroline's A Victim.”

With the encouragement of fellow singer Lily Allen, Kate released “Caroline's A Victim” in 2007 on the indie Moshi Moshi Records label. Her second single “Foundations” was released through Fiction Records a few months later and was also an immediate hit. Such was the demand that her debut album Made of Bricks was released earlier than planned in August 2007, reaching No. 1 in the UK Album Chart and No. 36 on the US Billboard 200. Appearances at Glastonbury, Isle of Wight and Wireless Festival festivals followed, as well as on many TV shows, including Later with Jools Holland. She won a BRIT award for Best Female Artist, an NME award for Best Solo Artist and a Q award for Breakthrough act in 2008.

In 2009, she founded and became a director of the Featured Artists' Coalition, which lobbies for greater autonomy in the music industry for artists. She also created Kate Nash's Rock 'n' Roll for Girls After-School Music Club, which aims to inspire young women to become interested in writing and performing music. She is politically active and uses her fame and influence to raise money for worthy causes.

In 2010, she released her second album My Best Friend Is You which was produced by Suede's former guitarist, Bernard Butler. Her third album, Girl Talk, was released in 2013. She has collaborated with many famous musicians, including Kano, Lethal Bizzle, Sam Duckworth, Billy Bragg and Willow Smith, and she also produced Watsky's Hey Asshole in 2013. Musically she has been influenced by such diverse artists and bands as The Supremes, John Cooper Clarke, Regina Spektor, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Elvis and Janis Joplin.

This was my fourth time seeing Kate Nash in concert, and I will continue to see her every chance that I get! She is so talented and keeps cranking out amazing, catchy songs. She is energetic, fun to watch live, and has a super talented band.

Honestly she was so amazing on stage. She interacted so well with her fans that it felt like we are her friends and her voice was so on spot and perfect. She even told us cute stories about each of her songs and it was so sweet. Her bands was also phenomenal. Her guitar playing along side her bands took my breath away. God they were all so talented and sweet about it. Super cute was also perfect. I have never seen a ukealee played so well.

    Kate Nash = amazing!!!!!

    by ClarkG1201977689077 on 3/22/13The Basement - Columbus

Saw the amazing Kate Nash Wednesday night and to say she was awesome does her an injustice. Her connection with the audience was out of this world, combine that with the new punkish sound of her new album provided an interesting and fun mix. I can't say enough how much I really really enjoy her performance. Plus the fact I as able to hang around and get a pic with her afterward was just was the perfect nightcap . If you ever have a chance to see her live and enjoy her sound I encourage you to do so. You will walk away amazed and mery merry happy.

    A Pleasant Surprise

by vandownbyriver on 3/21/13Paradise Rock Club - Boston

A friend introduced me to Kate Nash last year (the song "Dickhead", which, while she did not play it, she did remark how amusing it was that her concerts are one of the few acceptable places to shout DICKHEAD at somebody). I was fond of her bitingly funny lyrics and indie-pop based leanings. I bought a ticket to see her before her new album (Girl Talk) came out, and gave it a listen the night before the concert. Her album (and thus, the lion's share of the show) was much more riot grrrl and punk rock than bouncy, piano, indie pop. While this isn't normally a style of music I listen to, I actually enjoyed the energy and intensity that the punk ethos brought to the show. Her all-girl band was sharp and punchy, complimenting her sound well. While I didn't know most of the songs (as I'm sure few in the audience did; her album had just been released the previous week), it was still fun to just rock out. Kate has a great rapport with her audience, and is very funny in her responses to shouting fans. She forgot the words to the second verse of Foundations, but whatever. If you've only listened to Made of Bricks, or are prone to "IT'S DIFFERENT THEREFORE IT SUCKS", sit this tour out. If you aren't easily butthurt and enjoy seeing an artist's changing expression (and aren't vehemently anti-feminist), check her out.

I loved Kate Nash before, but I love her even more after seeing her live. The venue was great since I was able to get a spot on the balcony with a great view of the stage.

Oh Kate, where did you go?

by Sarah0216 on 3/17/13The Magic Bag - Ferndale

I had been sick for a week and pulled myself together to go to this show. Man was I disappointed that I wasted the gas and a night of going to bed early watching bad tv. First of all, I got to the venue an hour late because I had no interest in seeing the opening band after previewing their "sound" on youtube. Like the rest of the audience, I not only manage to make it before the opening act went out, but I was standing around for over an hour waiting for them. Their set was blissfully short 7 songs, yes I counted. The last song had the bassist saying "meow" over and over into her mic. Just...bad. Well it was okay because KATE NASH was going to come on! The girl with the snarky attitude, cute dresses, great accent and wonderful music! The musician who's CDs have been on loop in my car for weeks at a time. This is what I kept telling myself for the next hour or so that we stood around waiting for her to come on. Ms. Nash FINALLY made an appearance around 11 pm with her "girl gang." The girl gang should have been my first sign to leave. The second should have been the first screaming, guitar fueled shriek fest into the mic. The third should have been the fact that by 5 songs in people were leaving, no one was dancing, no one was singing, between every song people were yelling out song suggestions. I took the screaming of songs to be a helpful hint to Kate that her devoted audience were not the sorts of people who generally enjoy screaming lyrics and just WAY too much guitar. Speaking of guitars, could she have switched guitars more frequently?! You really need 4-5 guitars to play 10 songs? Well I kept thinking: I'll just hold out, she has to play Foundations, Mariella, something to redeem this! She's got to have an acoustic guitar someone. Then it happened! Foundatio...OH GOD NO KATE!!!! Foundations comes on and she's made it punk, indie, Brit rock. I stuck it out and thankfully I don't remember how the butchered versions of the 3 older songs she sang went. I will say that when Kate actually sang, her voice was beautiful and she has amazing lyrics. I understand that artists evolve and change, but this just seemed so forced and contrived. I have a hard time believing you go from England's Zoe Deschannel to a reject member of The Runaways. I have never been so bored at a concert. I have never seen so many people leave for such an established artist. I have never so badly wished for a power outage.

    Kate Nash ROCKS!

by BritishMike on 3/17/13Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Kate's style has evolved steadily over the years, and is now a kind of psychedelic rock feminist punk mix. Still very quirky and British, but a long way removed from her Made of Bricks days. Personally, I think it's great! I've been a fan since all the way back when she had about 400 Myspace friends, and finally getting to see her live was well worth the 7-hour round trip. Kate and her all-girl band played a 90 minute set with great energy, and had a nice bit of banter with the audience between songs. She's on tour promoting her new album "Girl Talk" so of course that's where most of the songs came from, but there were several old favourites in the mix too. I'm guessing it must be pretty frustrating for an artist to have fans continually just asking for stuff from your first album (6 years old now!) and she dealt with it with great humour. I was talking with the folks over at the merch table about Kate's recent trip to Ghana in her new role as global ambassador for the charity 'Because I am a Girl'. One of the things I do like about Kate is that she is keen to use her fame and influence to help strive for a better, fairer world. She gave them a quick plug in one song break, and there were a few flashing 'Protect a Girl' bracelets visible in the audience, which was cool. The Paradise is a small club with no seating. Walking around, there was a noticeable change in audio quality depending on where we were standing. The balcony had the best combination of sound and view - guess that's why the reserved sections were there! Overall, a fantastic evening. Very intimate venue and a great performance!

    Kate Nash: Disappointing

by Amandacha on 3/16/13Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Kate played maybe two songs from her old albums. Most of the fans were there to hear a mix of all her music. Instead, fans got a dose of angsty feminist crap. The opening band was also annoying. A lot of waiting around for a let down.

    KATE NASH DID IT AGAIN!

by GirlGangForLyfe on 3/16/13Paradise Rock Club - Boston

This was my third time seeing Kate Nash and it was my third time leaving the venue absolutely in awe, wishing the set never ended. Never have I seen an artist so raw, real, and truly invested in the energy of the crowd. Kate had me singing and dancing along for the entire set. Her girl gang of Fern Ford, Emma Hughes, and Linda Buratto are true talents. The new album is one of the best I've gotten my hands on since "My Best Friend is You". The beat, the lyrics and the messages are the reflection of a TRUE artist. Bottom Line: Kate Nash and her Girl Gang put on one of the best, if not the greatest, shows you will ever see. Do not miss the rare opportunity to see them in action.

a Good Show at a Great Venue!

by anet2184 on 3/15/13Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Kate Nash played almost all new songs from her most recent album. Although people seemed a little disappointed that it wasn't as much of a sing-along as they'd like, it was a good show. This was my first time at the Paradise, and it's a truly fun-styled lounge. I already have tix to another show there and I'm very excited for that venue again!

I am a huge Kate Nash fan. I was very upset as the upbeat show it was a punk show with her screaming at us for an hour. I had plans to request my money back I was so disappointed.

    Kate Nash

by TipTop1 on 3/15/13Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Kate's music has changed considerably over the last few years. No longer is she the innocent London girl who wrote some cool lyrics about her youth and relationships. Kate has gone much darker and her music is more hard rock than anything else. I couldn't understand her lyrics as the bass drum and guitars were drowning it out.

    Great performer, albeit opinionated.

by CourtnieMarie on 3/15/13Brighton Music Hall - Boston

I share most of the same opions so it didn't bother me but someone who doesn't might have been put off. In any case, great musical performance and style range through melodic harmonies and angry uptempos.

Kate Nash what a fun experience

Kate Nash isn't normally the type of concert I would go to but I genuinely had a good time.

by AMarley on 3/15/13Brighton Music Hall - Boston

I understand that artists evolve and that their music often changes over time, but it would have been nice if Nash had played more songs from her first album, Made of Bricks - since that is the album most people know (I think this statement can be verified by the crowd response. Everyone was dancing, singing and excited when she played "Foundations", whereas the crowd was pretty quiet when she played her newer songs). A better integration of her newer and older songs would have improved the show. And fewer covers - especialy when there were unplayed songs fans really wanted to hear

    Kate Nash -- Seriously Rockin'

    by themrs37 on 3/22/11Wonder Ballroom - Portland

We arrived in Portland on a rainy night. Soaking wet, we walking into the Wonder Ballroom. First we heard the unforgettable Peggy Sue, who were amazing, and totally worth buying a CD which I got signed by all three of them after the concert! Then, she came up. KATE NASH. This concert blew my mind. Nothing could top it. Best night of my life. The sound was amazing, and she was just as good live if not better than the CD's. She started out with the crazy awesome "I Just Love You More" which really got the crowd excited, and ended with an encore of "Pumpkin Soup." All of it was just incredible. Even the extremely wordy "Mansion Song" was a favorite moment! She just poured her heart and soul into these songs, and it was worth it! Its 5 months later, and I STILL can't believe I got to go see her! GO NASH!

light, fun and soulful, just how I like it

by arlash on 2/4/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

Kate Nash in concert, at the intimate Showbox at the Market, was even better than I expected. She connected with the crowd, made jokes, poked fun at herself and, most importantly, rocked out. Her range in music styles wasn't tampered live, it was made better -- from the screechy "I Just Love You More" to the sweet, plaintive "I Hate Seagulls," Kate knows how to deliver with that amazing voice and playful stage presence.
