In 2023, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band.
KDTU has electrified audiences around the world from the fields of Naeba in Japan at the infamous Fuji Rock Festival to the hallowed stage of Madison Square Garden where they previously joined the Dave Matthews Band and The Godfather of Soul, James Brown. From performing as Sexual Chocolate (Karl was in the original band in the movie Coming To America and its sequel) at the Outside Lands Music festival in San Francisco, to being the first late night act at the inaugural Bonnaroo festival, KDTU have been a dominating force in music for the past 25 years.
All-night, sold-out concerts during Jazzfest in New Orleans have featured sit ins by everyone from Lenny Kravitz & Steve Winwood (with whom Karl has recorded and toured) to avant garde luminaries Marc Ribot & Boyfriend. Chuck Leavell and Bernard Fowler (Karl's bandmates in The Rolling Stones where Karl replaced the great Bobby Keys as saxophonist in 2014) have joined onstage and on record, as have Lukas Nelson, John Oates, Michael Franti, Warren Haynes, Ivan Neville, Anders Osborne, Big Daddy Kane, Roy Hargrove, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Joshua Redman, Marcus King, and Bernie Worrell, among others.
Touring the country with the Allman Brothers, My Morning Jacket, D'Angelo, The Roots, Public Enemy, Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead, Parliament Funkadelic, Slightly Stoopid, Widespread Panic, very few concert goers have been untouched by the Tiny Universe live. In addition to KDTU, Karl Denson aka "Diesel" is a founding member of the seminal groove act The Greyboy Allstars.

I didn't know much of Karl Denson and his band before the show- they were utterly amazing! Rocked the venue- major jam session- totally talented and over the top showmanship from each of the band members. Would totally see again
Karl Denson will never let you down. He is always ready to bring the funk and great grooves and somehow always keeps it fresh.
The lineup of lady vocalists represented the legacy of the Queen of Soul- they were amazing. Each of them brought something to the music of Aretha. While the male singer was good, my friends and I were puzzled why he got more play. The burlesque performance for Respect was so disappointing and odd. Didn’t belong in this lineup-served to almost poke fun at the music. Gave us a sad feeling at the end.
Incredible show! I sang, I danced, I cried and I laughed...it was awesome! Totally didn't want to see the night end. Karl Denson never disappoints and the ladies that he selected to sing Aretha Franklin's songs were so, so, so very good. Thank you! : )
The band just backed a mostly talented, but pretty standard group of singers taking turns on Franklin's hits. Could have been any band, could have been any singers, could have been any venue.
This was my first time seeing this group, and man! They were super heavenly awesome!
Show didn’t even start till after 1:00am. :( doors opened at 10:30 so we just sat there and waited and waited. First song came on and it was so late we left.
Karl Denson's Tiny Universe finally got my curiosity after all these years when they played at an outdoor festival that I could not attend. After watching YouTube videos of them performing, I then eagerly jumped on a reserved seat in the balcony of House Of Blues during Jazz Fest. This meant that I had to miss three major acts at Jazz Fest in the hours before this show, but this one far exceeded my expectations. I call it jazz rock funk and mostly instrumental. The 8 piece band absolutely COOKED. I ordered their latest CD when I got home.
Even on the last show of a long stint on the road, you wouldn't have known if he didn't tell ya'. He's amazing, especially for his age and how long he's been at it. So is the rest of the band, KDTU is the only band I bother to see anymore because they're always a great time. Professionalism, raw talent and good humor, love 'em!
Such a fun dance party! Sounded the best they have ever sounded! Really fun night;)
Every song had a nice long groovy jam. Karl's singing and horns were a treat. Seth freeman was great on lead guitar.
I will go see Karl every time he comes this way. D.J. had his own band across the street, Would have loved to see that also,Just too long a day for me.
It was the best show I saw the entire second weekend of Jazz Fest 2017. That's not faint praise.
SUPER MEGA AWESOME!!!! SUPER MEGA AWESOME!!!! SUPER MEGA AWESOME!!!!
What a rockin' show! Karl never disappoints! There was some serious funk and guitar rock synergy happening in that room!
This Karl D show was off the hook! Orgone opening was pure funky fun and this was by far the best of the 3 Karl D sets I saw last week... The other 2 being on Jam Cruise. Always a great crowd at Crystal Bay Club. Discovered Ideateam from Sacramento playing the after party! Big Fun!!!
Karl is the real deal. 'Nuff said. Don't miss it. Heck they NAILED a Billy Cobham so. yeah!
CBC used to be a place to go get your groove on. You can still do that but bring your earplugs and elbow pads. Clearly over sold. The CBC crowds are always polite which is a saving grace in a venue that had lost it way a touch along with the sound guy's hearing.
Karl Denson was amazing! His band is "top notch" and the special guests that were there made the evening a different event. At one point there was 4 guitar players on stage. WOW!
