About

In 2023, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band.

KDTU has electrified audiences around the world from the fields of Naeba in Japan at the infamous Fuji Rock Festival to the hallowed stage of Madison Square Garden where they previously joined the Dave Matthews Band and The Godfather of Soul, James Brown.  From performing as Sexual Chocolate (Karl was in the original band in the movie Coming To America and its sequel) at the Outside Lands Music festival in San Francisco, to being the first late night act at the inaugural Bonnaroo festival, KDTU have been a dominating force in music for the past 25 years.

All-night, sold-out concerts during Jazzfest in New Orleans have featured sit ins by everyone from Lenny Kravitz & Steve Winwood (with whom Karl has recorded and toured) to avant garde luminaries Marc Ribot & Boyfriend.  Chuck Leavell and Bernard Fowler (Karl's bandmates in The Rolling Stones where Karl replaced the great Bobby Keys as saxophonist in 2014) have joined onstage and on record, as have Lukas Nelson, John Oates, Michael Franti, Warren Haynes, Ivan Neville, Anders Osborne, Big Daddy Kane, Roy Hargrove, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Joshua Redman, Marcus King, and Bernie Worrell, among others.

Touring the country with the Allman Brothers, My Morning Jacket, D'Angelo, The Roots, Public Enemy, Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead, Parliament Funkadelic, Slightly Stoopid, Widespread Panic, very few concert goers have been untouched by the Tiny Universe live.  In addition to KDTU, Karl Denson aka "Diesel" is a founding member of the seminal groove act The Greyboy Allstars.

Karl D and Company brought the heat!

by MegP on 5/18/22Fillmore New Orleans - New Orleans

What a show! The Fillmore was an iconic place to see this amazing lineup of musicians tributing the great David Bowie. Karl Denson was on point, as was the rest of the band. I hope they do something like this again

    Karl Denson covers Bowie

Very good show with deep cuts from throughout Bowie's career. Loved the covers from Station to Station. Band was tight, venue was awesome and Karl was charming.

    KDTU Brought The Heat

by EarsOfTheWorld on 2/21/22Summit - Denver

Unfortunately, the New Orleans Suspects started at 8:00 sharp and were all done by the time we got there at 8:45. We heard the end while we were in line. We didn't know this was gonna be the schedule until the day of. Would have been nice to know that sooner. I think the Pimps of Joy Time have changed personnel since I last saw them five or so years ago. I thought they had a female lead who was really good and brought a lot of energy. The original guy is still there, but it wasn't quite the same. Karl and the Tiny Universe brought their A game, including a trumpet player who Karl recruited from New Orleans who had only been touring with them for two weeks. Keyboard player also really stuck out as awesome. Overall, a five-star affair; I just wish I had gotten a chance to hear the Suspects.

    Starman

by Paddy on 2/16/22Crystal Bay Club Casino Crown Room - Crystal Bay

Bowie show was off the hook -- funky, soulful R&B, and a little punk rock too. Perfect vehicle for Karl and the crew to explore.

    Meh

by I bird on 2/15/22Crystal Bay Club Casino Crown Room - Crystal Bay

I love Karl he is the best show you can see. This show just proved to me that I’m not big of a Bowie fan. I thought if anyone would make me appreciate Bowie it would be sir Karl and it just didn’t happen. They played the music great, I was just wanting a face melting solo’s from DJ and well Bowie don’t have many guitar solos. I would recommend the Bowie set to anyone who loves Bowie. Can’t wait for Greyboy I will get my redemption 🕺🏼🥳🍻🍆

    Great Show

by SB on 10/18/19Aura - Portland

Music was fantastic! Musicians were amazing! Karl was a great showman and so talented. Would definitely see them again. Only issue we had was that they pushed the show 30 minutes later and after the opening act (not impressed) we had to wait another 40 minutes before the band came out, not happy about that.

I didn't know much of Karl Denson and his band before the show- they were utterly amazing! Rocked the venue- major jam session- totally talented and over the top showmanship from each of the band members. Would totally see again

Love Aretha! Tribute elements ranged from fab to flat

by Jenj on 5/6/19Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

The lineup of lady vocalists represented the legacy of the Queen of Soul- they were amazing. Each of them brought something to the music of Aretha. While the male singer was good, my friends and I were puzzled why he got more play. The burlesque performance for Respect was so disappointing and odd. Didn’t belong in this lineup-served to almost poke fun at the music. Gave us a sad feeling at the end.

Who were those ladies and where can I hear them again?

by Tam on 5/6/19Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Incredible show! I sang, I danced, I cried and I laughed...it was awesome! Totally didn't want to see the night end. Karl Denson never disappoints and the ladies that he selected to sing Aretha Franklin's songs were so, so, so very good. Thank you! : )

    Underwhelming

by Fester19 on 5/6/19Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

The band just backed a mostly talented, but pretty standard group of singers taking turns on Franklin's hits. Could have been any band, could have been any singers, could have been any venue.

Show didn’t even start till after 1:00am. :( doors opened at 10:30 so we just sat there and waited and waited. First song came on and it was so late we left.
