Justin Hayward on Tour

While a Moody Blues concert is an epic event, a Justin Hayward solo show — which might contain some of the same songs — offers fans a more intimate experience, one that's equally entrancing in its own way. Hayward wrote and sang the bulk of The Moody Blues' biggest hits, from "Nights in White Satin" to "The Story in Your Eyes" and "Your Wildest Dreams." And he's usually happy to bust out some of his Moodies tunes in his solo shows. But he's also maintained a solo recording career ever since the 1970s, full of melodic gems that you won't get to hear at a Moody Blues concert. And it's the combination of those two elements that really makes a Hayward show a special occurrence unto itself. When you're hearing Hayward deliver his material in a more direct manner, sometimes telling the stories behind the songs, it makes for a unique connection with this rock legend.

Justin Hayward in Concert

The world knows singer, songwriter, and guitarist Justin Hayward best as the driving force behind The Moody Blues, one of the most innovative bands of the classic-rock era. With Hayward at the helm, the Moodies moved from an R&B-inflected style in the mid-1960s to a more psychedelic sound later in the decade, making history with their marriage of classical music and rock on the 1967 milestone Days of Future Passed and prefiguring progressive rock in the process. And though he led the band through multiple comebacks and evolutionary phases in the subsequent decades, Hayward also created an artistic space all his own outside of The Moody Blues. He released his first solo album, the appropriately titled Songwriter, in 1977. And ever since then, though he's had long periods where he concentrated on being a bandleader, he's never closed the door on his solo career. Whenever he's ready for a more personal statement, Hayward steps away from the Moodies to resume his path with his own music.

A True Pro Takes Us On a Musical Tour

by MoodyFan on 4/15/24Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Justin Hayward showed us why he can still draw a crowd after all these years. He is the consummate professional musician, both as a performer and song writer, whose voice can still take us on a musical journey of new and old standards. The musicians who accompanied him were equally accomplished and it was amazing that four musicians on stage could produce such rich and beautifully sounding music. Kudos to all of them! I would definitely see him again should he return to Fort Lauderdale. On a different note, the only disappointing part of the evening was the lack of courtesy shown by "adults"playing on their cellphones. The gentleman next to me recorded almost the entire performance and then checked emails in between. What a totally rude distraction! Please do all of us a favor and stay home if you are going to play with your phone the entire time. I went to see the folks on stage, not your cellphone screen.

    Amazing & Incredible

by Crosby Blues on 4/15/24Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Justin Hayward’s voice and guitar playing was like traveling back in time. It was nearly perfect. The rest of the band were also perfect. I will remember this concert as one of the, if not best small venue concerts I have been to. I have been to many. Rock on Justin.

    Great

by Jay on 4/15/24Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I first saw the Moody Blues when their hair was brown and their teeth were white, rather than the other way around. Have seen them every chance that I can.

    Great concert

by Dan C on 4/15/24Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Sang many more recent Moody Blues songs. His band was small but perfect with his lead guitarist and keyboard player. Justin is still able to perform these songs like he did 25 years ago.

Having seen the Moody Blues 20+ times, it was so great to hear Justin up close and personal. His voice was flawless and the songs were just beautiful. All of the musicians were great. I hope they will consider coming back to Niagara Falls, Canada or Buffalo, NY. I would definitely see them again

    Not a real Moodies concert.

by Vintage man on 10/29/23The Avalon Theatre At Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort - Niagara Falls

Justin Hayward, Mike Dawes, and the two female musicians (sorry forgot their names) were excellent. Hayward is a Hall of Fame classic rock legend. However, Mr Hayward stayed on the melancholy dreamy type songs too many times. I was hoping the concert would have more punch and energy packed songs like the Moodies used to do. It was still a privilege to be in the presence of such rock royalty and excellent musicians.

This was a wonderful concert. Perfect for seeing and hearing Justin Hayward. It was cozy, comfy and acoustics were good where I was. Justin, of course, sounded melodious and tranquil. Ahhhh. His voice was strong; his backups were complimentary without being overwhelming. Each of them is talented in his/her own right. I enjoyed hearing the background stories of Justin's songs and experiences. Thank you for coming. The Ticketmaster system was easier than expected. I'm only somewhat comfortable with QR codes and such but I did it.

    Entertainment at the Albany Egg

by maja on 10/15/23Hart Theatre at the Egg - Albany

It was great fun to see Justin with Julie, Mike and Carmen again. The show moved at a good pace with many of the oldies and samples of newer songs. It was very interesting to have background info from Mike and Justin on the songs they were going to perform. Especially enjoyed were both "Forever Autumn"and "Nights in White Satin". There were many applause and standing ovations during the program. As one concert goer shouted out: "You've still got it, Justin!"That pretty much summed it up; we came to hear Justin and his music.

Another iconic night at the storied Birchmere

    by Blanche Horst on 7/5/23

Thursday, 22nd June 2023, Birchmere Music Hall, Alexandria, Virginia — the 3rd performance of 4 overall local shows penciled into my personal calendar and it was memorable. Curiously, it also fell precisely 77 weeks to the day following my previous live Justin Hayward performance on 22nd September 2021, a time still fraught with Covid-19 risks and concerns. So pleased venues have weathered difficult times, artists are eager to play live despite the considerably higher costs associated with work permits and touring, and audiences are filling the seats to support their favorite musicians once again. Hands down, the best part is feeling the mutual love and affection, nearly familial, between those in their seats and the musicians on the stage. The Birchmere sold out yet managed to squeeze several more into the house, and it was a lively but respectful crowd… most surely a homecoming since Justin has appeared many times at the storied music hall since 2013, virtually a local himself. The 15-tune setlist was a mix of old and new, ideally sequenced: The Eastern Sun Driftwood Tuesday Afternoon The Actor Hope and Pray The Western Sky The Voice Living for Love Forever Autumn Never Comes the Day Your Wildest Dreams Question Nights in White Satin The Story in Your Eyes I Know You’re Out There Somewhere Justin and his solo touring band put fresh arrangements to timeless classics. It’s lovely to hear the familiar tunes with new perspectives, pristine and closer to how they originated at conception. Everything old is new again. The vibe is nostalgic. Hey, many of us are in our late-70s too, mellow, more reflective! We welcome the acoustic presentations, don’t miss the drums and other accoutrements. Kudos to Mike Dawes, Julie Ragins, and Karmen Gould. All have added key elements to the setlist tunes to lend a brilliant patina. Clearly, Justin values each of them and takes great delight in touring with them, respects their contributions. Mike Dawes opens the evening with a 5-tune setlist of his own. Must admit he shuffles his covers regularly, can’t recall exactly the tunes he regaled us with on the 22nd, but they were in this eclectic mix: Boogie Shred Jump Somebody That I Used to Know Purple Rain Me & You Together Be My Mistake Somewhere Home All Along the Watchtower Many standing ovations, musicians in no hurry to leave the stage, another lovely night at The Birchmere. Gary Oelze would be beaming. Also want to compliment Ticketmaster for making the digital ticket so convenient and secure. Well done. Appreciate the frequent communications to ensure the ticket was in the Apple Wallet ready for the scan. Thank you.

Concert was great. Love Mike Dawes and Justin and his group, too. Liked the venue - small enough to be close to the performers and able to have drinks and dinner if you wanted it.

    Wonderful as always

by Donnie on 6/25/23Birchmere - Alexandria

Justin Hayward was fantastic, and his musicians were consummate professionals just as he is. I greatly enjoyed the evening and hearing Justin and his band mates do a terrific job on Moodies’ favorites and Justin’s solo work. Both he and Mike Dawes have a wonderful sense of humor as well. I highly recommend the show!
