JUDY COLLINS IN CONCERT:
Legendary singer-songwriter Judy Collins has lent her iconic voice to an impressive range of genres over her five decade career, from her beloved folk work to acclaimed forays into rock and show tunes. Whether she's taking fans down memory lane with nostalgic performances of "Both Sides, Now" or breaking hearts with "Send in the Clowns," Collins never fails to imbue her material with the wistful romance that makes her performances so moving. Back on the road with a diverse collection of classic material, she is set to stun on her upcoming tour dates.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in Seattle, Collins grew up studying classical piano under the rigorous tutelage of acclaimed pianist Antonia Brico. After being exposed to folk music in her teens by her radio DJ father, she made a shift towards lyric-based guitar music. Immersing herself in Greenwich Village's folk scene, Collins worked as a street performer and played small clubs before eventually attracting the attention of Elektra Records and releasing her 1961 debut A Maid of Constant Sorrow. While her early albums offered a straightforward folk sound, she branched out on 1966's In My Life, recording songs by artists as diverse as Leonard Cohen and Jacques Brel and incorporating lush orchestration -- a bold move for a folk artist at the time. The stylistic shift proved a success, earning her a Grammy in 1968 for "Both Sides, Now" and setting the tone for much of her later work. Collins continues to be a consummate performer, stunning fans around the world with her continued grace and charm in concert.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"For those of us who remember Judy in the 70's, this was like stepping back in time. Her voice is as beautiful as it was then. Her persona is warm and engaging. What a treat."
"Judy Collins is an amazing talent; and her voice sounds as clear and crisp as it did 50 years ago.
Loved her storytelling and anecdotes too!"
"Cannot believe what a marvelous voice at age 74. A truly spectacular performance by a vital artist!"
Judy Collins is THE BOMB! She was funny, and musically on top of her game. So glad I was able to see her, and hope she keeps touring.
Sweet voice and wonderful stories great show. Her piano and guitar player were awesome as well
Judy Collins voice is as good as ever. Her song selection was an excellent blend of the old and new. The one unfortunate thing was the sound . The volume was much too loud, and it detracted from the great vocals and instrumentation. Too bad.
Everything worked out perfectly. Parking was easy and, although there were online negative reviews, there was a gracious attendant on every floor to make sure all went well. You walked through the skywalk and through the Au Rene theater and again signs and attendants helped you through. The theater was perfectly sized. Judy Collins was incredible. And her guitarist and pianist were excellent. She told tales through the performance and changed each memorable song with an incredible use of multiple pitches and unwaveringly lengthen notes. A humble and incredible artist.,
Great seats allowed us to engage in conversations with Judy throughout the show. Could not have asked for a better experience!
This wonderful talent has great stories to tell and songs to sing. I was great to see her and her 2 excellent musician accompaniests playing her old and new songs. the world needs more voices like hers!
Though it's clear that being 84 does not produce the same patter & the same music that Judy Collins provided 40 years ago, she's still got it. Her pitch was really good about 90% of the time, and particularly in the upper register. Those high notes are still amazing! In the middle to lower range, it was a little off now and then, but not so much that it made me say, "Ouch."She needs a bit of assistance from time to time with mobility (but not much), and - like the rest of us boomers - sometimes forget where she's going with a story. She has wonderful stories, is a tremendously talented artist, and her two accompanists were excellent. What a life this lady has led! I'm so very glad I went.
Venue is great, & Judy Collins is great but it was surreal because I am middle aged and was in the top 5 youngest attendees. Despite this, they made everyone drinking wear arm bands. I don’t know who was in charge of watching the sitting arrangements but immediately after I got thru the doors I saw an elderly woman fall off a bar stool in the lobby. It was bad. So for a younger crowd it would be perfect. For the elderly, they need lower seats in the lobby. Parking & traffic around the area was a little tight too, so be forewarned, but it is a nice theatre. The bathrooms are clean and functional.
Judy Collins is as good as ever, she can hold a note as she did in the 60’s and her new song are just as good and will be rememberable also…
This was a wonderful concert!!! Judy Collins’ voice was just as beautiful as ever. I am sooo glad I went!!! This was a not to miss concert!!!
Notwithstanding her years of experience on this earth, Judy Collins can still sing. She performed at Atlanta's Buckhead Theater for a bit longer than 90 minutes. Her songs were punctuated by her life stories placing her music in context. Her voice is still beautiful and her sense of humor connects her with the audience, which she invited to sing along with her as she sang many of her standards including Send in the Clowns and Some Day Soon. The only mild disappointment was that she didn't sing "Both Sides Now"as the audience requested. The venue was fine, the audience seated in a bit of a cramped configuration, but the acoustics were pretty good. All in all, a very nice evening with one of the "Echos in the Canyon"stars.
We have been fans since High School and College and her concerts only get better and better!
The indoor venue was great and ,thank goodness ,it was a dry December 8th night. We had only been to Bethel once for an outdoor concert (Josh Groban)last year. The staff at the door were very helpful in getting us to our seats. I did find that the seats were very close together and I think that with winter coats to deal with, it made our seating seem even more close. But the venue was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The sound was very good. Poor Ms.Collins had a bit of a cold but her voice was still dreamy. It was fun to hear little snippets of her life; she has quite a sense of humor.! It was a wonderful evening!
Judy gave an intimate and powerful performance. The setting was prefect. She's as witty as ever and her song choice was perfect for the evening.
Ms Collins is a class act. A beautiful every with beautiful music surrounded by those who appreciate her talents.
OK, so yes, her voice is not what it used to be, but heck, for 84 years old, she gave a lively and entertaining performance. I did not realize how funny and humorous she can be (not remembering this when I saw her in her prime). She kept me laughing, and she can be self-deprecating....and not ashamed nor embarrassed by her forgetfulness (numbers and dates, and lyrics). I have loved her since I was a teen. She is an amazing woman, with a lifetime of wonderful memories that she shares. I wish she had paid tribute to Leonard Cohen, as she did for Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and John Denver. And please, Judy, put on more comfortable footwear!! Those spiked heeled boots are going to result in a fall on stage (just ask your pianist!)!! And I absolutely loved and adored Ari Hest, having never heard of him or his music. Outstanding voice!!!! Also loved her guitar/electric piano accompanist and piano man. This will be the last time for me seeing her, which makes me sad....but she has had a stellar career and deserves to be doing what she loves best: singing and performing! Thanks, Judy!!!
Shes a sweet lady who has had an amazing career but its time to hang up giving live performances. Lots of sour notes in every song. Sad.
Judy Collins has an angelic voice. Her voice and choice of music never disappoints us. We love the way she often tells a short story about a song before she sings it. Madeline Peyroux, who was on the bill with Judy was also excellent. What a great show!
Judy Collins’ voice is still fantastic! I first saw Judy at Symphony Hall in Boston in the late 60’s. She sounds as great now as she did then!!! Her song selections were perfect and the acoustics were excellent! BRAVO to the band, Count Basie Theatre, and especially Judy!!!
A legend. Still a beauty. Voice was still phenominal Very personable. Great audience reaction.
