After more than three decades of creating and producing unsurpassed entertainment extravaganzas around the world, Mr. Arden turned his attention to Jubilee! which opened on July 30, 1981 and has now been seen by over eight million people. The fact that this long-running show still receives accolades from around the world is evidence of his genius.
What Steven Spielberg has meant to the silver screen, Mr. Arden meant to the stage: breathtaking action, unsurpassed pageantry, and some of the most amazing scenes every executed on the live stage. A tireless perfectionist, his touch is everywhere , from the costumes and staging to the lighting and set. Jubilee! is truly his enduring creation in every sense.
Part of what has contributed to the lasting popularity of Jubilee! are the more than 1,000 unique and individually designed costumes created by internationally-renowned designer Pete Menefee and world-famous Bob Mackie, designer to stars. The original cost of these colorful, glittering costume was $3.5 million, with millions more being spent over the years to upgrade and maintain literally tons of feathers, hundreds of thousands of rhinestones, and miles of stunning fabric.
In fact, lest you think all the costumes consist of nothing more than strategically placed rhinestones on a gorgeous showgirl, consider the gowns for Finale: some required more than sixteen yards of material. Many girls also wear over 120 separate twisted plumes of pure ostrich feathers and ten yards of boa.
