About

Josh Groban is an American crossover vocalist and songwriter covering classical, contemporary and pop styles. Josh enjoyed tremendous chart and critical success almost from the very start of his career with numerous gold- and platinum-selling records and worldwide tours in the 10-plus years he has been on the world stage. Blessed with a highly versatile voice that can range from upper baritone into the tenor range, Josh's unquestionably impressive vocals has made him one of the most popular crossover classical singers of the last 20 years.

He was born in 1981 in Los Angeles and attended Los Angeles County High School for the Arts before being offered a place at prestigious Carnegie Mellon University. While studying he was introduced to award-winning music producer David Foster, who invited the talented singer to work with him. After a number of stand-in roles, he impressed everyone he worked with and was signed to Warner Brothers and soon found himself on tour with Sarah Brightman. He featured on her DVD La Luna and quickly found himself in high demand. With the vocal ability to sing the classics as well as more contemporary and pop-styled songs, he was able to work with people like Elton John, Charlotte Church and Stevie Wonder, further stretching his talents and range.

By 2002 his self-titled debut album had gone double-platinum and he was appearing at events like the Nobel Peace Prize Concert and the Vatican Christmas Performance, alongside artists such as Sting, Celine Dion and Ronan Keating. His 2006 song “You Raise Me Up” won Josh his first Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and his third album, Awake, went double-platinum in both the USA and Canada. In 2007 Josh took part in a tour that brought him to 71 different cities around the world, truly establishing him as a worldwide vocal star.

His 2010 album Illuminations was another big hit and contained 11 songs written by Josh himself. It reached number four on the US Billboard chart and once again sold more than million copies in the USA. His 2013 album All That Echoes jumped straight into the Billboard Chart at No. 1. Josh has made a number of live appearances in front of huge crowds, such as his live TV special on PBS, the NFL Super Bowl and performing at the Concert For Diana at Wembley Stadium.

    Josh was fabulous as usual

by HamFam97 on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Josh in concert is a treat. Josh's "Before We Begin" was unbelievable! Imagine sitting in your living room asking Josh any question and requesting any song. That is what Saturday was like. He was his usual goofy, good-natured self. His voice was as smooth as the water, tea, and wine he was drinking on stage. Who could ask for a better night?

    Multitalented Josh-What a gift!

by NWPat on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

The whole evening was OTT! The idea of the show was clever and well thought out. Josh NEVER disappoints. The repartee with the audience was really professional. He worked the stage with confidnece and ease. The song list was great--golden oldies and a hint of new. Only one complaint: The sound was really bad. The piano was over amped and sounded like a broken spinet. With that voice, Josh didn't need an over amped mike! BUT I would pay 10 times the price to see that program again! Kudos to you Josh.

    Groban at the Balboa

by seggo on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

It's not quite a concert. It's more of an intimate meeting with the fans. Groban only does about 10 songs acoustically. The lack of instrumentation really allowed his voice to shine. He spent a good amount of the 1.5 hours telling stories and interracting with the audience, even drinking a glass of wine. The drawback was that many of the audience members felt the need to approach the stage, pass personal items up and yell out loud. It became a bit unruly for my taste. Disregarding the antics, Josh Groban is warm, funny and has a voice sent from heaven!

    Josh Groban

by Nic001 on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

This was such an great setting. Perfect for Josh Groban. His voice rang out and filled the theater well. The theater is so beautiful and rich in architecture. Gave the feeling of romance while listening to such a great singer.

This was my 8th Josh concert and it was by far the most intimate. I loved the acoustics of the venue and how small it was. Of course everything Josh did was amazing. He sang some of his old stuff which was refreshing and introduced the audience to some of his new songs. Overall it was an amazing experience. The reason why I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 was that I was extremely distracted by a couple things. The first being all the cameras. I thought for certain there would be no cameras allowed. Now, I don't mind if a person wants to take a photo or two but EVERYONE around me took photo after photo. The lights and flashes really distracted me from his performance. Also, SOME of the fans that came to this venue were really obnoxious. They would just shout out things over and over trying to get his attention. Yes, I understand that the whole point of this intimate setting was to be able to have that sort of back and forth but after screaming "Josh..ITS MY BIRTHDAY" 10 or 12 times...I don't think he is going to respond. I also didn't appreciate someone screaming/heckling him to perform a certain song throughout the course of the night. But like I said overall, it was an amazing experience and I feel blessed to have experienced the magic of Josh.

    One time event

by Scoutingmom on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I absolutely loved it. It was intimate and improvised, so I felt like I got to see some of the real Josh and that there would never be another show like that one. He was funny and charming and of course he sang like an angel. It was great to hear songs from his very first album as well as from the new album. It was a lot of fun when he had the house lights turned on and just talked with the audience.

    Josh never disappoints!

by Lindarellla on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I enjoyed this Josh Groban concert at the Balboa Theater as a change from his previous concerts that are usually held in huge arenas. The show was very informal with a lot of interaction with the audience. The stage was set like a living room and a few lucky fans were invited to come up on stage to sit in the sofas and enjoy the show from there. It was like spending an evening with an old friend who just happens to have an incredibly beautiful voice. Josh accompanied himself on the piano for many of the songs with only two other musicians backing him up for the whole show. He sang a mix of new and old songs, including several songs in Italian which are my favorites. I hope he does more small concerts in the future.

Rekindled my inpiration for Josh Groban!

by dana143josh on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Having a concert at a smaller event made it more personal for people to interact. He encouraged the audience to participate to ask question. He allowed his personality to show versus a choreographed concert. It felt like a coffee shop performance. Thanks Josh for the great experience.

    Evening with Josh Groban

by topofthepeek on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I enjoyed that it was a very intimate setting. Josh Groban did talk a lot. When he did sing it was great. We got to hear some of his new songs and only a few older ones. He did not sing any of his hit songs. My daughter loved it and that makes me happy. She also had a better seat than I did. It was worth the price we paid for the tickets. Only odd thing about the concert was when he invited people onto the stage because the people were odd. We came to see Josh Groban not them. Leave them in their seats.

by Bellaciao on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

This was an unforgettable experience. It felt like we were sharing the living room with Josh. He was funny, totally real and excellent at improvising. And, his voice is better than ever. I cannot wait for the tour to start. My advice is do not miss the tour. Whether you are new to Josh or have been in love with him since the beginning, I feel sure you will leave inspired and filled with joy.

It was magical! Josh never disappoints! His beautiful voice sounded amazing, he did some new songs and some of his older songs that he hadn't performed in years! What a treat! He talked and joked back and forth with the audience with a comedic timing that would rival any professional comic. I can't wait for more!!! :)

Illuminated Josh Groban in a whole new way!

by Grobanite4ever on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

The curtain rose to reveal Josh Groban lying on a sofa with his dog, Sweeney. This moment set the tone for an unbelievably relaxed and informal concert. Reduced to just a piano, keyboard and guitar, Josh was able to showcase his amazing voice---just the voice--and without a 60 piece orchestra or lush, over dubbed arrangement. Josh took questions from the audience and shared moments from his life and career. He even invited a few people to join him on stage---an 83 yr old grandmother, birthday girl, old married couple and newly wed gay men. He was charming with everyone. Josh sang several new songs from his upcoming album, as well as old favorites. His voice is as beautiful as ever. And I hope to see him again in this small venue.

Josh has a very unusual voice that is captivating. I wish I could hear him sing in a bigger venue with a larger orchestra. The Civic Theatre of San Diego would be perfect

    Great Show, Great Location!

by Anonymous on 11/9/10Balboa Theatre - San Diego

We has a great time at the Josh Groban "Before We Begin" Show at the Balboa Theater on Sunday night. However, they should have called the show--An Intimate Evening with Josh Groban. Rather than a traditional concert, it ended up being about 11 songs and Josh sharing with his audience. I enjoyed the banter and stories. I enjoyed his playing the piano and the fact that he only had two other musicians with him. . . . I enjoyed that his voice was even better than on his albums. I did not enjoy the group getting up on stage portion--Get rid of that! The Balboa theater was from top to bottom FABULOUS! The acoustics are terrific and the seating was comfortable. An intimate small theater--where EVERYONE can see the stage--how wonderful in this day and age! Would go to see Josh again--especially in a small venue and will most definitely will start looking for other shows in the Balboa Theater. A good night for everyone involved!
