The sophomore effort from Oregon-bred trio Joseph, Good Luck, Kid (2019) is a road movie in album form, an odyssey that turns emotional, existential, and entirely literal. With their intimate storytelling and restless intensity, Natalie Schepman and her sisters Allison and Meegan Closner detail that journey in songs that careen, sprawl, and often soar, ultimately spinning a narrative of life-changing transformation. "The through-line of the album is this idea of moving into the driver's seat of your own life--recognizing that you're the adult now, and everything's up to you from this moment on," says Schepman. "It's just the universe looking down on you like, 'Good luck, kid.'"
Joseph grace every song with the captivating chemistry they first discovered upon forming in 2014. Spontaneously choosing their name on a trip to visit their grandfather in the Oregon town of Joseph, the band got their start playing backyard parties, and gradually amassed a devoted fanbase. Following the release of I'm Alone, No You're Not (2016)--an album made with Mike Mogis (First Aid Kit, Jenny Lewis)--Joseph soon began taking the stage at major festivals like Bonnaroo and touring with such artists as James Bay and Amos Lee.
In Good Luck, Kid, Joseph deliberately strayed from the dreamy folk of their 2016 debut, giving way to a far grittier and more dynamic sound. Produced by Christian "Leggy" Langdon (Meg Myers, Charlotte OC), the result is a nuanced breed of pop/rock built on thick drums and lustrous guitars, heavy grooves, and radiant melodies. Despite that bolder sonic palette, Good Luck, Kid remains centered on the band's crystalline vocal work, including the otherworldly harmonies that suggest a near-telepathic connection among sisters.
This show was AMAZING!! I will definitely go to see Joseph again.
Amazing performance! So much heart and soul. And a little bit of humor. Go see Joseph!
Can’t even put into words how great this band was!!!
The sisters are such a great combination. Great songs with great harmonies. What’s not to love?
Loved the smaller venue and the Girls hit it out of the park. I think they had as much, if not more fun that I did. Hope they come back to KC soon!
These 3 sisters put on an awesome show!! When everyone is listening to whatever is on the radio, we forget about real music. This band doesnt need all the special effects of over produced production just a guitar, amazing vocals and lyrics and you will be hooked. If they are in your city see them, you wont be disappointed.
Amazing gifted sisters trio! They sing like angels and are so talented. Beautiful and meaningful songs!!!
This was my first time seeing Joseph live. I also did the meet and greet. The ladies were more than gracious with their time before the show and answered many questions about themselves and their music. The show that followed was a delight. Beautiful woven harmonies with thoughtful and emotion tugging lyrics combined with rousing anthems like “Run the White Flag” made for an evening of musical magic. I also must point out that the Paradise while seemingly strange in shape, had spot on acoustics and sound quality. And finally, the opening band, Deep Sea Diver was an unexpected pleasure. Really cool, really edgy in a hypnotic way.
You know when you go to see an artist live and they disappoint you somehow, like with poor vocals or the band is off rythm or they make odd remarks or they’re drunk/high? Joseph does not disappoint. They were impeccable, as always. Absolutely blown away by their ability yet again. The harmonies.. my goodness. Leaves me with goosebumps! They are a must see live show. I’ve seen then many times now and they’re always remarkable. If they are ever in your area (or even far away), go see them! You will not regret it! The venue was nice, too. The staff in the preferred seating area were great.
3 sisters seriously are amazing! Their voices are incredible and they put on a seriously great performance.
Absolutely would recommend them to anyone! These sisters can sing!
Beautiful harmonies and well crafted songs by the sisters from Joseph ignited and wowed at The Newport in Columbus. Great energy and chemistry. Fun and stirring. A show not to be missed.
The harmonies from this band are incredible. Sounds like they've been together for years. And the lyrics are spot on.
This was a concert I had been anticipating since I purchased the tix last December. The vocal arrangements were so fluid between the singers, the songs were simple but yet had a complexity about them that I find difficult to describe. The band was kept small (bass, drums, rhythm/pedal steel) and whoever was doing the board work produced the clearest, cleanest sound...no muffled or garbled words.
Joseph is AMAZING all around. Songs are great, voices are great, performance is great.
Joseph puts on an incredible live show! Go see them... you won't be disappointed. And Delmar Hall is a great new venue for St Louis!
I've seen a lot of great shows in my life, but I have never gotten chills so many times during a live performance. I was standing so close I could hear the actual guitar, not just the amp. After the show, the band went back to the merchandise table. They all are so down-to-earth and clearly love meeting and talking to their fans, which is great to see.
there is something so pure and simple about 3 voices harmonizing. Joseph takes that and elevates to a level of magnificent beauty.
Spotify was great. Live was flippin fantastic.i highly recommend following Joseph as they continue to grow and amass fans.
Kelsey Kopecky was incredibly funny and witty with her songs. She was super down to Earth and a joy to listen to. Then Joseph came on. It was incredible hanging out with these three sisters. They were so comfortable on stage and with one another. Lots of inside jokes were passed. Of course, the music was wonderful to hear. The entire atmosphere was just one of joy except for the more somber songs, which is still a good thing. I adore the twins and so it was magical spending the evening listening to them. Natalie is phenomenal as well.
