The sophomore effort from Oregon-bred trio Joseph, Good Luck, Kid (2019) is a road movie in album form, an odyssey that turns emotional, existential, and entirely literal. With their intimate storytelling and restless intensity, Natalie Schepman and her sisters Allison and Meegan Closner detail that journey in songs that careen, sprawl, and often soar, ultimately spinning a narrative of life-changing transformation. "The through-line of the album is this idea of moving into the driver's seat of your own life--recognizing that you're the adult now, and everything's up to you from this moment on," says Schepman. "It's just the universe looking down on you like, 'Good luck, kid.'"
Joseph grace every song with the captivating chemistry they first discovered upon forming in 2014. Spontaneously choosing their name on a trip to visit their grandfather in the Oregon town of Joseph, the band got their start playing backyard parties, and gradually amassed a devoted fanbase. Following the release of I'm Alone, No You're Not (2016)--an album made with Mike Mogis (First Aid Kit, Jenny Lewis)--Joseph soon began taking the stage at major festivals like Bonnaroo and touring with such artists as James Bay and Amos Lee.
In Good Luck, Kid, Joseph deliberately strayed from the dreamy folk of their 2016 debut, giving way to a far grittier and more dynamic sound. Produced by Christian "Leggy" Langdon (Meg Myers, Charlotte OC), the result is a nuanced breed of pop/rock built on thick drums and lustrous guitars, heavy grooves, and radiant melodies. Despite that bolder sonic palette, Good Luck, Kid remains centered on the band's crystalline vocal work, including the otherworldly harmonies that suggest a near-telepathic connection among sisters.
My daughter has seen Joseph before but this was my first show…they were so fun I would definitely go see them again! Always love the Paradise!
As always, Joseph are incredibly talented. Great melodies, lyrics and harmonies. For the first time I was disappointed in the sound at the Paradise. Whoever was on the controls had the back up musicians (also great) volume turned up so loud that they often drowned the singing out. I made a video recording of a song to hear later just to confirm it and it was obvious. Missing the vocals is missing Joseph. The volume was also 5-10% too loud. My ears are still ringing.
This is the second time I've seen JOSEPH in concert and they only get better each time
JOSEPH and their opener SAWYER made me feel right at home with their infectious energy, candid performing, and genuine love for each other, their music, and the audience. Also loved the venue because it never got broiling hot in there!
Fortunate I got to see them live!! Joseph is an incredible band!
Aside from the bass being way too heavy in the mix, everything was awesome. The reason to see these musicians is the superb harmonies they are able to achieve. Unfortunately, the mix prevented you from really hearing that. Not sure if that was the Knitting Factory or the band personnel.
Joseph at the Echo Lounge in Dallas was easily the best concert I’ve been to. From Natalie, Alli, and Meegen’s stage presence, outfits and storytelling to the energy of everyone in the audience, the concert exuded joy. Loved being introduced to Flyte as well! Overall it was the most pure and joyful experience and much needed after the past 3 years of the pandemic
Joseph was magical at the Fillmore. I always love the sound of love music. The new album is just incredible too! We always love coming to the fillmore and meeting other music enthusiasts too. So chill.
Had a wonderful time and it was great to hear songs off the new album and old favorites. Definitely recommend the VIP meet and greet as well. :)
I have been listening to Joseph for about 5 years and their music is beautiful. The earlier albums were great and I still listen to Native Dreamer, but The Sun takes them to the next level!!! I have been going to live music for over 40 years and can say that very few bands perform and tightly and beautifully, seeing Joseph live is worth it!
First time seeing Joseph live and they did not disappoint. Madrid wasn't the prettiest of venues, but it just the right size and had great acoustics. The opener, Brother., was a new and delightful experience. But the ladies owned it and completely rocked the night. Even Natalie falling (without injury) will be a fantastic memory I cherish. They are amazing performers that remain down to earth. The smaller venue was also perfect, because it led to a lot of interaction between the bands and the audience. I have loved the band since I saw them on TV on a cruise a few years ago and it was great to see them live. I will be going out of my way in the future to see live performances. Love you ladies! (Meegan is my spirit animal)
It is a wonderful experience seeing this group live. Fantastic show, great harmonies and beautiful music!
Never heard off either group. Took a chance on this concert but it was at the Bijou and I like they're approach to booking acts. Purposely didn't research them. DEEP SEA DIVER: opening band. Check their equipment. Nice. Somebody has a lot of pedals mounted on what looks like two steps to a trailer. Large box with DEEP SEA DIVER lit up on it. Lights dim and band saunters on stage. Hey, girl guitar player. Chrissy Hynde? Pretenders tribute band? That's ok I guess. Cool looking guitar. They start up with a very interesting groove jam. Then...YIKES! What have we got here?!!! 4 players hitting on all cylinders, electronics and loopers and sequences combining with peculating drummer patterns, complimenting bass parts, well placed and played shred-guitar solos and keyboard fills. Tone and polish. There is something here. It was a great set of music I was not aware of and it ended too soon. Yeah, standing "O" from everyone. Bought both CDs at the show but hearing the songs performed with this much energy cries for a 'live' release. Doesn't matter if the next band disappoints this was worth it. JOSEPH: What a package! These girls came to play - like a well timed fireworks display. Enjoyed hearing every song for the first time performed and presented with the energy as if it was their first time. I remember thinking "Wilson-Phillips on Red Bull" but then they excused their incredibly well rehearsed competent band and the sound changed to a closer more intimate sound. The audience ate up the banter and joking that just seemed to happen. Gave the ears an adjustment period before inviting DEEP SEA DIVER guitarist Jessica Dobson on stage to join them. The fireworks picked up again and it was obvious why the bands teamed up. Special kudos to both drummers. The entire night was a well paced display of tone, polish, energy and experience and like a world class fireworks display: incendiary right to the end. PLUS I love surprises!
Former Knoxvillians, we love the Bijou & Joseph so much, we traveled from Clearwater, FL to attend! The meet & greet was well organized and on time, with clean facilities and quick service at the bar. FIVE stars! We loved every minute of it; We’ll be back! ❤️
These girls have come so far in their music journey! They give an amazing live show and show passion every second of the show. The whole audience was dancing and crying, and it was beautiful. They are a must see!
This show was AMAZING!! I will definitely go to see Joseph again.
Amazing performance! So much heart and soul. And a little bit of humor. Go see Joseph!
Can’t even put into words how great this band was!!!
The sisters are such a great combination. Great songs with great harmonies. What’s not to love?
Loved the smaller venue and the Girls hit it out of the park. I think they had as much, if not more fun that I did. Hope they come back to KC soon!
