    Joseph's Creamcoat

by Ltovar on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

All in all this production was fine...maybe even great. The costumes were really beautiful. The music, songs and dance were as always wonderful. Most of the cast seemed very well prepared and professional. I was disappointed in the two leads. Especially the moderator whose voice often seemed strained and somewhat tinny in nature. Joseph was hesitant in some scenes....not sure if he was surprised about what was going on or just forgetting his lines. I would recommend this if for no other reason that is one of Webber's best.

    Solid Production

by kokomojoe on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

I've seen Joseph at least a half dozen times, and this one was one of the better productions. The strength lies in the choreography, which is top notch. The only thing I thought detracted a bit was the lack of voice strength in the lead role of Joseph. It is very noticeable when paired with the really strong female voice of the narrator.

    Great Family Time

by letstrythisone on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

My 9 yr old granddaughter knows every song and every movement from the video. I explained that some things might be different. She loved it. Noticed differences and actually like some things from the show better than the movie. Sang along with every song. Still talking about it to everyone.....

It's not fair since I saw Donny Osmond play Joseph years ago. I couldn't hear Joseph enunciate the words. I could barely hear him at all. The Narrator plays a big role in this production – I wish they could have casted stronger leads. My husband spent intermission looking up the story online to see what he missed. Not my favorite production at Gammage, but one of my favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber shows. We like aisle seats and the ushers do an excellent job at holding back late arrivers. (Poor parking planning due to the marathon registration, by the way, even with the email reminders.) We sat on the same side as the sing language interpreters. Although they blend in – they can be bit distracting since they tend to get into the production. Since they are in the line of eyesight of the stage, they block some of the stage and performers and we were 14 rows up. I wish there was a note when I had purchased tickets. It could have been louder -- couldn't hear Joseph at all at times.

    Joseph was not so amazing

    by DAPS12 on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

I could not believe this was a Broadway production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I have seen this play about 8 times and small local theaters have had better sets, directing, and talent. The scenery and props were very low budget. It's like they weren't even trying. Ace Young was the worst Joseph I have ever seen. His voice is small and nasally. He was able to pull off the very end of "Close Every Door", but someone needs to tell him to quit with the baby voice when he is singing the soft and higher pitches. Someone is not doing that poor guy any favors by telling him it sounds good. It's awful. The Narrator was bad. They did not sing Any Dream Will Do at the beginning, which was very odd. They did not bother with a children's choir, which was missed, but I would not have minded to much if Joseph could carry his part. Ace Young's acting was just bad. Was he cast because he has abs? I don't care about abs. I want talent!!!!!!! The brothers, Potiphar, the pharaoh, the dancers, Jacob.... everyone else was really great, but if you don't have Joseph and the Narrator cast correctly, it puts a damper on everything else. Clearly they had talent to pull from, so the casting of Joseph and the Narrator was baffling.

Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

by Rimlli on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

I have seen this musical many times and really enjoyed this production of it. It had some elements during the show that were fresh and enjoyable. Diana DeGarmo (American Idol season 3) was fantastic as the Narrator. Her voice and range fit the part perfectly. Ace Young (American Idol season 5), on the other hand, was not as good as I would have hoped he would be. In my opinion, his voice has a slight whine to it, which distracted me from the enjoyment of the songs he sang. It appeared to me that he struggled with the dance moves as well. I believe this is due to the fact that the other performers were at such high quality, it made him look less. The rest of the ensemble was amazing. Paul Castree (Simeon) and Ryan Williams (Pharaoh) were fantastic in their individual numbers. Overall, it was a great production and I would highly recommend it to all ages.

    Great visual but inconsistent audio

    by L0veMusicals on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

I'm giving it 3 stars, primarily because of the inconsistent audio/sound. I'd definitely give 5 stars for performance! This was my 3rd time to see Joseph at ASU Gammage and the 1st time for my 5-year old. Although the performances were fantastic, I felt that the sound for the storyteller (Diana DeGarmo), Joseph (Ace Young), and a few of the other lead singers was a bit muffled and at times, the lead singers' voices would get drowned out by the group singers which wasn't the case when I had seen the musicals before. I know the performers can sing, so I was quite disappointed that I couldn't distinguish their voices and/or words. We were in the middle of the auditorium which I would have expected to have had the best sound quality. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Overall, Joseph is still one of my favorite musicals with the storyline and visual effects.

    Joseph was not amazing

by twostars on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

Overall it was ok. Hard to understand the lyrics. The narrator screeched and Joseph was middle of the road. Some of the back up cast were really good. Lots of energy expended

Joseph at Gammage - Sound volume is way too low.

by NitroM on 1/20/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

The play was good. Unfortunately, the sound system sounded as if it was purchased at a Radio Shack on a clearance table. It was awful. I asked everyone sitting around us if I was the only one who thought the sound was bad and way too low. Everyone agreed. I'm not sure if the sound engineer forgot to turn up the volume or if the Gammage auditorium needs to invest in new sound equipment, but it was disappointing. The acting is good, but not nearly as good as the Donny Osmond version.

Took my wife for her birthday. Gammage is an incredible venue and the musical was unforgettable. Particularly enjoyed pharaoh doing his best Elvis impersonation!!

Very high energy. Need to articulate words to song in a more clearer fashion. The dancing and actors were fantastic.

    Colorful and fun!

This is the second time I've seen this show. So fun, with colorful outfits and characters! Music is great, loved the performers voices.

We took our teenagers to the show. Our family loves the music and the story--we have the songs memorized. This production was disappointing because our kids wondered why Joseph didn't "flee" from Potiphar's wife. Sometimes the singing was hard to understand if you didn't know the words. Usually solos were fine, but chorus numbers seemed like the microphones needed to be adjusted.

    inadequate sound

by surprissed on 1/19/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

The lead voices did not project well and we missed most of the words. The back ground music clouded the voices. Lost money that night

    "Joseph" found lacking

by Anonymous on 1/19/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

Really disappointed that the lead sang as if Joseph was on the cast of Jersey Boys. High pitched, nasal, and a Jersey accent. It's been some time since I've seen the production, and I wish they would go back to how it used to be - costuming trying to fit the time of the story.

    Glitches dampens the experience.

by Chroall on 1/19/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

The production had difficulties with sound quality from the start. The orchestral sound overwhelmed the singing parts quite often. The scenery allowed the audience to see performers moving backstage while others were onstage which was somewhat distracting. The greatest error occurred when the program running effects and lighting crashed and thus a reboot occured which was a long wait. The flow of the production took a terrible hit at this time and produced in myself a regret for having purchased tickets. After the reboot the cast recovered well and sound definitely improved. The dance numbers were performed well and the experienced dancers were very dynamic. The cast members who appeared to have more singing than dancing experience, had some difficulty with their transition steps. My wife and I had not attended live theatre in over a year and though we had a pleasurable evening we felt this production was only slightly better than very good local theatre.

The words were all mumbled for dreamcoat

by Anonymous on 1/19/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

The effects were nice and the choreography was also good. The narrators voice was extremely high and nasal and I couldn't understand a thing she was singing. The other characters were easier to understand but I did have some difficulty at times with them as well. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of the show vs. the cost of the tickets.

    great show, bad sound

by kules on 1/19/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

The performance was great, energy, music, atmosphere. However, the two main characters were very difficult to hear. Heard many other complaints of this nature during intermission.

    Fabulous production

by Grannylu on 1/18/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this Joseph production. The dancing was wonderful throughout and the sets were delightful. All of the actors were excellent but the Narrator and Joseph were really outstanding. The unique lighting effects were a special treat. I can't imagine how they were able to connect the coat with the back curtain near the end of the story. I also appreciated the modern twist of the curtain call.
