    joseph was disappointing

    by Bandit611 on 1/18/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

We have seen Joseph many, many times in the past. It has been awhile since we last saw it. We really like the music and were looking forward to seeing it again. The minute the narrator opened her mouth, I knew we were in trouble. This role demands a strong voice and an animated personality. This girl had neither. The man that played Joseph fared no better. His character also requires a strong voice and a commanding personality. His lacked both. The night we saw this performance, there were problems with the computer system and the show was delayed for 20 minutes. We were hoping it wouldn't get fixed and we would get our money back! In all fairness, the rest of the cast was very good with stronger voices than either of the leads and the lighting techniques were great.

    Amazing show!!

by AllyBebek on 1/18/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

Joseph has been one of my all time favorite musicals since I was a little girl and this rendition didn't disappoint. The amazing vocals of Diana and Ace were beyond impressive and the energy of the show was right on point. In my opinion Diana stoll the show :). I would highly recommend this to any patron young or old!

Joseph and Technical Mishap was ok

by Anonymous on 1/17/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

I was a little bit disappointed with this production. Obviously because the motherboard had major issues, and the production sort of lost momentum after that. We had good seats, but the sound quality was less than stellar. I absolutely loved all the colorful scenes and costumes. There were a few really good numbers, but most were average. I gave this production a score of 6.5 out of 10.

    Enjoyable but lacks strong leads

by JMAinAZ on 1/17/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

My review of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: Let me first state that I enjoyed the show. It was nice to introduce my daughter to musical theater. I grew up going to musicals and I’ve always been surrounded by theater “nerds.” 18 years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Boston starring the notorious, Donny Osmond. Mr. Osmond, in the role of Joseph, was simply incredible. And Janet Metz as the narrator captured the audience from the start. This version, although similar, seemed much more simplistic- a feature that disappointed me. I’m all for minimalist, “natural” theater, but with ticket prices in the range of $80 to $120 a seat, I expect more. This production had: cardboard sheep cutouts, minimally decorated, rolling wooden stairs, simplistic props- on par with a college production, and the lack of a children’s choir (normally a staple in this show). Wow. Furthermore, many of the better effects were simply PC graphics projected onto the backdrop screens etc. And the “secret” of how they did it was revealed when Microsoft Windows crashed ¾ of the way through Act 1- complete with the Window’s errors now projected all over the stage! We had a 20 minute delay as they rebooted windows! Oops. Having been spoiled with the talents of Donny Osmond and Janet Metz 18 years ago, I went in not expecting as good of performances from the two leads. And I would be correct. You see, part of the lure of this revival was to bring American Idol alums, and real-life husband and wife, Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young together on stage. This couple, who met through American Idol, got engaged on American Idol and have charmed the American Idol fans for many years- seem to have the look and charm for the respective roles. Unfortunately, their vocals are just not on par. Although there were a few moments where Ms DeGarmo’s voice shined, she came off as rather whiny and shrilly. The part of the narrator in Joseph requires a good voice that has good annunciation. Since there is no dialog in Joseph, the viewer relies on the narrator to inform us of what is going on. Diction is a key skill to have; Ms. DeGarmo severely lacks this quality. As for Joseph, Mr. Young looks the part, but his voice completely lacks the prowess of the other male performers. In fact, the other male roles in this revival are really good, especially the main brother- who nearly brought the house down in one scene. Unfortunately, the strength of the rest of the cast really showcase Mr. Young’s vocal weakness. If it wasn’t for the Joseph Megamix finale, the show would have ended in a dud with Mr. Young’s performance of “Any Dream Will Do.” I walked away appreciating Donny Osmond even more. I must say though, there were a couple of scenes that were added to this show that display some really good choreography; a hilarious tap dance number and a jaw dropping dinner scene- complete with clanging plates and silverware to the beat of the music. If you have never seen the show, I would encourage you to do so. It is the first time that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice collaborated- the first of many. The music and hijinks keep this show entertaining and fun even today.

    Mixed feelings...

by SherriNAZ on 1/17/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

I'm not taking into consideration the technical glitches that happened with the computer during the performance (which took 20+ minutes to fix), I'm just commenting on the performance. I think Gammage has a problem with their sound system. We saw Wicked and had a similar experience and that was several years ago. Higher voices sound shrill and words are distinguishable. Dianna's voice was like listening to someone scraping their nails across a blackboard. Ace's voice was so high, I couldn't believe it. Just to make sure it wasn't just me, I asked two other couples around us if they could understand some of the songs, etc. and they also said no. I watched both of these people on American Idol and those issues did not stand out then. There were a couple of flubs during the performance, but I guess I am not fond of the narrator's role of standing and dancing among the chorus in regular clothes versus costume. Perhaps that was just the play. I thought Ace was very good and so were the rest of the performers. I've seen clips of the play with Donny Osmond so this was a bit of a disappointment. I found myself hoping they couldn't fix the computer graphic problem so we could leave and get our money back.

Second best only to Donny Osmond.

by Anonymous on 1/17/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

I thought the production was great! Except for the technical difficulty the night we went which took about 15 minutes to fix, the two leads had wonderful voices and really put their all into their characters. There really wasn't a weak performance anywhere. I especially liked the use of the back curtain for visual effects.

    Joseph

by Anonymous on 1/17/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

The narrator singer was marginal. She was very hard to understand; her pitch was either too high or she sang too softly. A stronger voice was needed for that part. The Joseph singer was fine, but would have been better with a stronger voice. The rest of the ensemble was great. The overall production was great too.

    Nice evening out

    by S2KAZ on 1/17/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

My wife and I enjoyed the evening out. The production was entertaining but the performers had probably average quality voices especially the lead playing Joseph. The night we went there was a brief technology problem. A better back-up plan would be advisable.

There were many aspects of the show that were wonderful...staging, choreography and talents level of most of the cast. The brothers were terrific. The performance was marred by technical glitches and poor sound quality. Nonetheless I enjoyed it.

    The dancing was spectatular

I was very disappointing in the over all sound system. It was difficult to hear the singing by the narrator to understand the her words and the storyline.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamboat

    by 1Arizona on 1/17/15ASU Gammage - Tempe

The staging was sub par, their computer crashed mid performance and had to be rest. The male lead kept combing back his longish hair with his hands and was distracting. Neither the male or females leads voices were that good. The performance was a disappointment.

The performance was unforgettable! The music was great as was the dancing. Maybe it was our position in the auditorium, but we couldn't always make out the words. We still enjoyed it thoroughly.

    Joseph

by LisaKayeKate on 12/17/14The Theatre at Landers Center (formerly DeSoto Civic Center) - Southaven

I found this take on the show creative and fun. I enjoyed the presentation greatly. I was extrodinarly impressed with Johnathan Gilland. His showmanship, expression, and energy was incredible. His voice is bound for Broadway. Producers should be looking to him to carry their major stage rolls with pride and strength. The family theater showed great insight arranging for him to play Joseph. The kids involved obviously spent hours and hours preparing their parts and all were quite professional and energetic. Very entertaining performance!

Must see Joseph & the Amazing

by Ladybugz08 on 12/1/14The Theatre at Landers Center (formerly DeSoto Civic Center) - Southaven

DFT always puts on a great show, but this has been a favorite so far! The energy was amazing! They really took this age old story and brought it up to today's time and culture. We laughed and cried and laughed again. The local talent shined alongside the seasoned actors! And the children's ensemble was great as well! This is a must see!!
