    Disappointing

by CuteNCoily on 3/27/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

First off, let me say that the VENUE itself was beautiful! I've actually NEVER been inside of the Drury Lane before, so it appeased my expectations as far as the facility itself. Now, for the Musical..."Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"...OVERALL...it was a VERY poor rendition of the Donny Osmond version. Actors: Superb...Very good singing & dancing Special effects/Stage : Very good as well Storyline: VERY confusing & OFF...The idea to "MODERNIZE" this musical in a VEGAS setting was SO OFF POINT! A guy who is NOT Joseph, dreaming that HE is Joseph out of nowhere in his hotel room....makes no sense (Should have had directed him to actually OPEN the bible & then stumble upon the story of Joseph.... & THEN fall asleep & DREAM about it! Also the fact they tried to keep the original looking colored coat...& the original songs..which didn't fit because the setting is now in VEGAS...UH perhaps you should have made the coat more glitzy & flashy...like everything else in Vegas...Would have been more relevant with the theme TOO MUCH sexual content for a family musical! Very Risque scenes & costumes. Many people brought kids as young as 4! (I thought younger children weren't even allowed, but oh well) I overheard several upset parents around me that brought young children Even the Donny Osmond version had a few questionable costume choices for some of the scenes....but this version was way worse. WHY the theater failed to inform people that the story was completely altered is Outrageous...probably because they knew many wouldn't show up otherwise. I actually didn't see the reviews until a FEW days before the show, so I wasn't able to get a refund. I only went so I could see what the theater itself looked like, & didn't want to waste my ticket, since I already purchased.

A great new twist on an old classic. Vocals and dancing were awesome. Very well done.

    Unexpectedly fantastic!

by CarolinaHHI on 3/25/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

My expectations were not set high because it was a small production. However we were pleasantly surprised! The play was funny, entertaining and had great singing and dancing. Every performer had a fantastic voice. The narrator did impressions of Britney Spears, Celine Dion and other Las Vegas acts. She was hilarious! I would see it again. Seriously!

by Breezma on 3/22/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

What an unusual take on the old tale of Joseph and his coat, Myself and my whole party that attended the show were amazed at the talent and how unique this show proved to be, I would see this show again if it were running longer. Thanks for the amazing experience!

    Joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat.

by O2spoiled on 3/22/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

Left before intermission, went to see a biblical based world renowned play and saw a Vegas spoof. Told I should of read the reviews, maybe try changing the name of the play. So disappointed the venue would not do anything about this. 3 tickets @ 70 wasted. Not going back.

    A MUST SEE!!!!

by Spike59 on 3/21/18Drury Lane Theater - Oakbrook Terrace

Yes, like many others we thought were going to the "old" version that we had seen many times at larger venues. BUT . .this show was INCREDIBLE and I'm looking to see if I can find a place to go see it again. Definitely NOT a show for you to take your young child to. More of a sexy Vegas show. Music and words are pretty much the same as the show you remember; but played out in a whole different, modern way.

    Not family friendly at all!!!

by Satchmota on 3/21/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

I have seen this on Broadway and the movie as well. This version was absolutely...unnecessarily... Over-sexualized at every level. People were leaving by the score at intermission.

The new version of Joseph was AMAZING

by Wiebort on 3/21/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

I've seen the orginal version, which was excellent and now this version is equally amazing. The talent is beyond great. I highly recommend this venue and this musical.

A logical twist that really works well! Great performance by the whole cast, but the narrator really stole the show with her EPIC singing. Really incredible!

When it started, I was surprised to discover this was a modern interpretation of the show. But it was fantastic! So enjoyable for me, my husband and our 21 year old son. I don’t give standing ovations lightly, but I jumped up out of my seat st the end. Go quickly before it ends!

    No, no, no Joe!!

by chordirektr on 3/20/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

Maybe I am old school but I thought this production ruined the essence of what this musical has been for 50 years since first presented as a telling of biblical stories to school children. The charm of the original is the telling of these stories in a non-religious manner using humor and various musical styles. For many years now it has been one of the most popular musicals with many professional and non-professional productions drawing large audiences. So why change it so drastically? I just felt that this creation was pandering to our modern audiences who need glitz and technology in their lives at all times. Why not just tell the same story in a traditional manner and teach them the value of the past. Or go ahead and write a new musical that is technologically savvy and glitzy for audiences go crazy over. This production was superbly portrayed but just ruined the lovely story of the original JOSEPH.

    Fraud

by Sad4311 on 3/20/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

I purchased these tickets so that I could take my two 8 year old grandchildren to their first play. Never once did drury lane tell anyone that that they had changed the play to a salacious cartoon of the original. They didn’t recommend it for young children. When I called and said I could not attend and bring my grandchildren, they told me they don’t do refunds because ticket sales pay staff. I was also told to leave the kids at home and bring others. I bought those tickets months in advance to see the original child friendly play. I am a subscriber. This will be my last year I will be. This play was a fraud perpetrated on a trusting audience.

    Talented Cast - Horrible Directing

by EthanA on 3/20/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

When I made plans to see this show, it was with the grim determination I always assume when seeing a Lloyd Webber show. I have great respect for the man's career, but his shows are frequently filled with asinine asides and a certain lack of cohesiveness that simply grinds on my nerves. I have learned that a strong cast will, however, usually save a Lloyd Webber show, as it allows for the music to shine, which is always the strongest aspect of his shows. I was therefore rightly surprised at how bad this show was. The music (in whichever parts were left unmarred by 21st Century elements) stood strong and eccentric. The cast was fantastic, with Christina Bianco's phenomenal voice, though obscured by ridiculous 'Newsical the Musical' stylings, shining brightly, particularly in the cutting brilliance of her belted notes. The problem was in the direction - turning an earnest story of struggle, imprisonment, joy, mayhem, and repentance, and stripping it of all meaning and weight by transforming it into a dream sequence. Now, a show about a magic coat is never going to be a serious one, but at least other productions managed to keep the stakes of the story, as those stakes drive the plot ever forward. From start to finish, the show was disastrous - for the first time in my experience, a stunning cast and stunning music couldn't save the mangled remains of the book. I certainly hope Drury Lane does better in the future, and remembers that, while theatre is about the spectacle, at its core the whole thing is about telling a story.

    No GO GO JOE

by AMK4chi on 3/20/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

The actor playing Joseph was very good. The adaptation was awful. Joseph in a Vegas hotel room with a mobster father and brother was ridiculous. I didn’t pay to see impersonations of Vegas acts. Don’t waste your money.

    Joseph and their 'Vegas' interpretation

by LeeIdy on 3/20/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

My family was excited to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. However, this performance happened to be an interpretation of Joseph in Las Vegas! Far from the original intent of the play. The music was still good with performers who had great singing ability. Despite the performances, it was a disappointment. Wish we had known prior to our ticket purchase!

Fun reboot of old favorite. Great fun if one goes with the flow. Kick back and enjoy the talent that livens the show.

    Falsely advertised

by PatrickJohnson72 on 3/20/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

This is not the original performance. Do not take children and do not go if you are not into substandard celebrity impersonations. Read the Chicago Tribune review for a more in depth explanation.

    Modern Joseph

by Jmccourt on 3/19/18Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

Not sure where to begin, I was shocked and offended at the play, and very surprised drury put it on. As a Christian I thought they ruined a very important bible story and I felt they were making light of my beliefs. Myself and my 2 guests disliked the play. Had I been alone I would have walked out. The cross dressing bothers just made it vulgar certainly not a family show. Very disappointing.
