About

JOSE GONZALEZ IN CONCERT:

For more than a decade Swedish folk artist Jose Gonzalez has proven there's beauty in simplicity with his intimate, no-frills live performances. Though he's occasionally augmented by a percussionist, string section, or backing vocalist, he often performs with just an acoustic guitar, hypnotizing concertgoers with soft melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Gonzalez is revered for his mellow covers of tunes by artists including The Knife, Bruce Springsteen, and Joy Division, but his original material -- like the foot-tapping "Down The Line" and the delicate "Every Age" -- is equally entrancing. In 2015 Gonzalez hits the road for his first solo tour in seven years -- a fact that has fans chomping at the bit for a chance to catch him in concert.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Folk singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez was born in Sweden to Argentinean parents and grew up listening to Latin folk and pop music. After stints performing in punk and hardcore bands as a teenager, Gonzalez launched his solo career with 2003's Veneer, a collection of entirely acoustic tracks that earned comparisons to Elliot Smith and Nick Drake. The album spawned hit singles "Crosses" and "Heartbeats" -- the latter a cover version of The Knife's 2003 track -- both of which became soundtrack staples for television shows like The O.C., One Tree Hill, and Scrubs. In 2005 Gonzalez teamed up with drummer Elias Araya and keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn to form the folk rock trio Junip. He returned to his solo career in 2007 with his sophomore album In Our Nature, which cracked the Top 5 of Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. Over the next few years he released two albums with Junip, recorded songs for a handful of charity complications, and contributed three original songs to the soundtrack for the 2013 film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. In 2014 Gonzalez announced plans for Vestiges & Claws -- his first solo album in seven years -- as well as a 2015 world tour, his first since 2008.

Jose Gonzalez was AMAZING the venue-interesting

by deekay on 11/15/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

Jose Gonzalez is an incredible artist, it was such a unique experience to be able to view his movie and then hear him play some music. I understand the Run of Show in that the movie was slated first and the interview and performance second. That by and large is out of the control of the venue. What I didn't love was not being told the movie had already started when we arrived, not having way finders to our seat which were in the COMPLETE DARK and I also felt like I was boxed in because there aren't ample exits. Having to use the restroom was nearly impossible during the screening because of how dark it was and how hard it was to get out of the row. Leaving the parking lot was also a disaster, some traffic control would be greatly appreciated. The venue seems like it's newer, but these missed details may make it hard for us to return for another engagement.

I dislike when the artists don’t sing the main songs

by Lei on 11/14/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

I feel disappointed when the artist didn’t sing one of the main songs that he is known for. It’s nice to hear his new work too, but that doesn’t mean that he will put aside the songs that people know him for. And if that’s the case, the singer should put the lineup first, so the audience will know previously which songs the singer will play and could decide whether to buy tickets for the concert or not.

Wish he would have played more

by John on 11/14/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

The movie didn’t really resonate with me and the interview portion was a little slow. His music was great, just wanted more. It might have helped if I knew more about him before the show.

    Emotional intelligence masterpiece

by Andrew K on 11/14/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

There are no stars high enough for me to leave as a review. José González takes you on a journey through mental illness and the incredible journey to recover from it. The film lays bare the raw emotions Jose felt. And the music was stripped, bare down to its primal Components which we’ve you moved almost to tears. I would attend the showing every night if I could.

    So Disappointed

by Rob on 11/14/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

The focus of the event was the film rather than music. It felt like a bait and switch, and we were extremely disappointed.

    Preaching

by Disappointed on 11/14/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

Jose is a very talented artist... however, this event was not so much about his artistry but rather focused on his multiple psychotic break downs and his atheism faith. He insulted the Jehovah's Witness religion, more than once, and continuously referred to any religion that believes in a higher power as, "fantasy believers". I traveled 8 hours for this venue in hopes of the movie, talk, and performance to be something I would cherish. I will not. Deeply disappointed of him using the stage as his platform. I also will not be paying to see him again anytime soon and it has even made listening to his music difficult.

You have to be a fan...

by MDN on 11/13/23Moore Theatre - Seattle

So this review is for Jose Gonzalez "A Tiger in Paradise"screening event. For this event I thought the movie was well done and would give it an 8/10. I thought the Jose/Director Q&A could have used improvement 6/10. Not sure how, It was interesting and all, but could have been a little livelier. And the 6 or 7 song performance was excellent 10/10. I think if you are a big Jose Gonzalez fan or enjoy musician documentaries and background (which I am, and I find interesting), then you really enjoy this. if you are new to the artist, or so/so on the artist, then you might be disappointed. Because this event really is the story behind the artist.

    Mispresented Performance

by Lara Z Ragsdale on 11/12/23Moore Theatre - Seattle

It was over 2 hrs into the evening, and Gonzales had not even picked up his guitar. When I look back at how the performance was described, I thought I was buying tickets for a live performance. Here is what Ticket Master wrote:"The soothing and ethereal voice of the Swedish singer-songwriter and guitarist José González will envelop the walls of Moore Theatre this November 8 as he ignites the famous Seattle, Washington, venue with his intimate songs and performances. The "Heartbeats"hitmaker will invoke the feeling of tranquility and introspection in you as he sports his rich, velvety voice. If you want to experience the magic of José González's hits like "Crosses,""Stay Alive,""Line of Fire,"and "El Invento,"among many others, this concert is a must to attend. The 44-year-old singer-songwriter will captivate your senses with his signature melodic tunes and virtuoso guitar playing. Get your tickets ahead of time to secure the best seats in the venue. Whether you are an avid fan or simply want to attend a feel-good show, you are more than welcome. For ticket information and details on how to lock in the best ticket prices, click the "Get Tickets"link." Falsely advertised, very sad. If I knew I'd be watching a self-proclaimed movie about his mental breakdown, I would not have bought tickets. I left early because the whole night was terribly slow and not advertised properly. I respect what he went through but that "movie night"rather than a "musical night"should have been more clear. I no longer trust how you advertise.

    Disappointing night

by Disappointed on 11/11/23Moore Theatre - Seattle

Maybe we should have read more closely the event description, but the event was not a concert. It was a documentary of sorts, started 15 minutes late, followed by a strange Q&A with repetitive themes from the documentary and lacking in humor/entertainment. Listened to 3 songs from the amazing Jose Gonzalez before we had to leave around 10:30 PM because we had work early the next day. We did not feel that the event merited the cost.

Great format, great content, wonderful performance. Jose sings like an angel. Swedes are charmingly awkward on stage.

    Extraordinary night

by Spiderfarm on 11/10/23The Castro Theatre - San Francisco

What a special experience to see such a beautiful film and hear José talk and play! The film did such an impressive of job of getting into José’s head in a poetic way. Full of contrasts and questions and humor, I’ll be thinking about this night for a long time.

    Really disappointing

by Beatrice on 11/10/23The Castro Theatre - San Francisco

I knew there would be a “film” element to the show but, based on the description, I expected Jose to also play quite a bit of music. The film was excruciating to sit through. It was presented as a provocative piece of art with the facade that Jose was self reflective and concerned with his on his impact on the world. really it was self indulgent and all about Jose. And then the q and a was an extension of his and the director’s need for self praise about how wildly creative the film was. He played for about 30 minutes total. It was a waste of time and money

    Hmmmmm

by DJO on 11/10/23The Castro Theatre - San Francisco

The concept was interesting, but I’d rather have gone to a full Jose Gonzalez concert. The film was smart and funny, but indulgent and too long for what it was trying to do. I’d have edited the film to maybe 45 minutes and had Jose play for much longer. The Castro theatre is wonderful. I love it. The Staff was helpful. Long live the Castro theatre!

    Good but disappointed

    by Dharini on 11/8/23

I love Jose and I admire him for his courage. The show in SF was disappointing and seem to be hijacked by the director of his documentary. I sensed that most of the audience didn't come to watch the 75-minute film *where we see a video of Jose playing songs when he's right there! * The interview was weird. We did get a few songs from him, though. And of course, he's an amazing performer.

Overpriced for a documentary with a show

by Big Jose Gonzalez Fan on 11/8/23

First of all, Jose Gonzalez is an amazing musician. He’s a magician who uses his fingertips on the guitar. BUT, the Tiger in Paradise tour is much less about his performance and more about the film. He over two hours in to the show he played just three songs. It felt perfunctory. Special because he’s amazing, but not dissimilar from just putting on the music at home. I’m really disappointed by that I spent $200 on the “show.” I suggest skipping it.
