About

JOSE GONZALEZ IN CONCERT:

For more than a decade Swedish folk artist Jose Gonzalez has proven there's beauty in simplicity with his intimate, no-frills live performances. Though he's occasionally augmented by a percussionist, string section, or backing vocalist, he often performs with just an acoustic guitar, hypnotizing concertgoers with soft melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Gonzalez is revered for his mellow covers of tunes by artists including The Knife, Bruce Springsteen, and Joy Division, but his original material -- like the foot-tapping "Down The Line" and the delicate "Every Age" -- is equally entrancing. In 2015 Gonzalez hits the road for his first solo tour in seven years -- a fact that has fans chomping at the bit for a chance to catch him in concert.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Folk singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez was born in Sweden to Argentinean parents and grew up listening to Latin folk and pop music. After stints performing in punk and hardcore bands as a teenager, Gonzalez launched his solo career with 2003's Veneer, a collection of entirely acoustic tracks that earned comparisons to Elliot Smith and Nick Drake. The album spawned hit singles "Crosses" and "Heartbeats" -- the latter a cover version of The Knife's 2003 track -- both of which became soundtrack staples for television shows like The O.C., One Tree Hill, and Scrubs. In 2005 Gonzalez teamed up with drummer Elias Araya and keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn to form the folk rock trio Junip. He returned to his solo career in 2007 with his sophomore album In Our Nature, which cracked the Top 5 of Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. Over the next few years he released two albums with Junip, recorded songs for a handful of charity complications, and contributed three original songs to the soundtrack for the 2013 film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. In 2014 Gonzalez announced plans for Vestiges & Claws -- his first solo album in seven years -- as well as a 2015 world tour, his first since 2008.

Jose live is precious, a must see artist!

by Rachaeljean2020 on 3/27/16Beacon Theatre - New York

His playing was gorgeous, every note he sang and played On his guitar was effortless and soothing. Having y music ensemble accompany him was spectacular, they filled in all the right spaces and accentuated his already beautiful music. So worth it!

    Amazing music, frustrating venue

by Williamqp293080w on 3/27/16Beacon Theatre - New York

The combination of Jose Gonzalez and yMusic works really well, the music was beautiful. I am definitely glad I went and would (and have) recommend them as a show to a friend or colleague. Having said that: the crowd never really quieted down enough to fully enjoy the occasion. There were lots of late arrivals, even 90 minutes after the scheduled start time; ushers going back and forth, people getting up to get drinks, balcony lights never being turned off fully. yMusic in particular plays pieces that are best enjoyed in a quiet room, and they didn't get that opportunity, which was a real shame. They, and Jose, deserve a better venue and a better crowd.

    A great show

by Catatbat on 3/27/16Beacon Theatre - New York

Y music opened the show with a very inspired song and each of the five or so songs that followed were great, except to me each great song sounded very much like the last great song. It's not a very constructive criticism as many great acts never really change their formula, but I wish they would sometimes. Still, they were very effective. Then Jose Gonzalez took the stage and performed seven or eight solo songs that were truly inspired. He's a virtuoso guitar player and his voice stayed beautiful and consistent throughout. Unfortunately, when Gonzalez and Y music performed together I didn't think the result was as comprehensive a success as I would have hoped for these talented showmen. When they performed Gonzalez's Crosses, a great tune, their rendition wasn't nearly as impressive as it would have been had he played it solo on his guitar. However sometimes their collaboration worked, particularly with the last song of the evening.

Gonzalez with Y Music was absolutely mesmerizing.

    by Reverend7 on 3/23/16Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

This was a deeply moving and profound evening. You know, when you start weeping during the first song, that the music has somehow gotten a grip on you. I came with low expectations. My only exposure to Gonzalez was through a few movie soundtracks. This was incredible. The musicianship and pure talent of all the musicians was outstanding.

Seeing Jose Gonzalez live gave me a chance to not only hear the music and lyrics of his that I already loved, but also to see and to marvel at his wonderfully complicated guitar playing. He makes it look effortless.

Performance was flawless, even the missed note. You can't match the sound in this place. Unreal.

    Best syncopations

by IUGIRLINATL on 10/5/15Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

From the powerful start of the show with just Jose and his guitar performing the deep hitting Crosses, all the way through the jam sessions with the band, and even a surprise song from one of his band mates, this was a cannot miss event! The Variety is a great place to catch a show- not a bad spot in the entire place to see the stage from, and the lighting was surreal. So happy I was finally able to take in a Jose show!!!

    José González is a dream

by Anonymous on 10/4/15Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

This was the most beautiful concert I've ever been to. It was perfect. José's voice and his music are so beautiful, I was in awe. The event was peaceful yet energized. The audience could not stop applauding him after every song, but during each, everyone just stood and basked in the brilliance that is José. I am beyond glad that I went to this show.

    Meh

by ErinAnd on 4/14/15Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Jose Gonzalez sounded just like his album-- beautiful-- except that the feedback was horrible and made my brain shake. The engineers at Paradise didn't seem to do anything about it, unfortunately. Jose's opener was an Icelandic yodeler and was terrible. I wish that the concert were better produced as we left early :(
