About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

What a show! Jonathan had boundless energy and you could easily tell how much he enjoys what he does. His band, especially his wife on the violin was very talented and tight.

He is my favorite artist of all times. I love the music he creates with his mouth, fingers and guitar. He never disappoints. That was my fourth time seeing him over 40 years.

Jonathan transported us to a beautiful place with his music and testimony. Top tire performance. A true artist who was humble enough to meet fans without an extra cost.

by Joi on 8/4/25The Carolina - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was absolutely phenomenal. I defintiely would attend another Johnathan Butler concert. I appreciated Toni Tupponce and A Sign of the Times opening up the concert. They set the stage. Also appreciated the highlighting of each musician. Appreciated hearing about the various artists who inspired Mr. Butler as well as about his South Africa roots. Please bring him back again soon. We had church. It was a spiritually uplifting concert!!!

The show was excellent! We have seen Jonathan Butler MANY, MANY times and this performance was near the top. Loved the impromptu selections. Always love the spiritual context and his sense of humor!

  • Awesome Show

by Detroit Sammi on 5/6/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

Wonderful show , acoustics were magnificent, but disappointed that one artist fell ill and J. Butler portion was shortened significantly .

  • Jonathan Butler is awesome.

by jazzo on 5/5/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Jonathan Butler is awesome. The concert venue has a lot to desire. The first 2 acts the music was way too loud. When Jonathan Butler came out, it was more toned down and balanced. Much more relaxing. He is great. The parking at Clowes hall is awful. Long lines to get in. Will not attend another show there. They could do much better. Very disappointed!!

  • The sound was horrible

by Ben S on 5/5/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 2 out of 5

The volume on the bass drum was so loud you could hardly hear the instrument Gerald or Najee was playing unless they were soloing. Just a constant rumbling overpowering everything else. We left before Najee was done; didn't even hear J Butler--figure what's the use. Also a very long time between Albright and Najee sets. Pros like them should have a MUCH BETTER presentation.

  • The sound was a problem

by The sound quality sucked on 5/5/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

The experience was affected by the poor sound quality!!!!!!

  • GAlbright, Najee and J Butler. - The Real Thing!

by GWhite on 5/5/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Gerald Albright got the party started with Toast it up” and Najee had us dancing to funk music from the 70s like the infectious “flashlight”. Johnathan Butler, just getting back from South Africa , brought a moment of serenity to the stage with his heartfelt ballads like "Sarah Sarah"and "A Song for Elizabeth,"a touching tribute to his mother. His performance was beautifully complemented by his wife on the violin. Captivating from start to finish. Kudos to Geno Shelton for orchestrating such an outstanding show. Looking forward to the next production!

  • Great Show

by Gayle on 5/5/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Too many artists. Jonathan Butler should have come on earlier as the headliner.

  • Great music, unorganized

by Bob on 5/5/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

All musicians were outstanding but the program was too long mainly due to extended set up time between acts. The DJ and promotion of future events was unnecessary.

  • Great artists, not-so-great sound mix

by Mark S. on 5/5/25Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 4 out of 5

The artists are immensely talented with superstar careers and life experiences. Top-notch. And a great venue. Unfortunately, the mixing engineer did a poor job, IMO. The bass frequencies were so loud and booming that you could hardly hear some of the other instruments. I've been to a zillion similar concerts and most are much better mixed than this one. It unfortunately detracted from the overall experience. We go to enjoy the music, but could hardly hear the music through the all the booming low frequencies.

  • LIVE MUSIC at It's BEST!!!!

    by DCLife1 on 11/13/24Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Jonathan Butler is that rare talent whose soul voice and sentimental mastery of music is calming, uplifting and entertaining. I love to go see him live and listen to his timeless hits. His band, including his talented and beautiful wife play alongside him as he mesmerizing the audience. I took my best friend and his wife and they loved it. I AM A HUUUGE---FAN, plus, after the show he was kind enough to take pictures with me and other fans!!! I love me some Jonathan Butler!!!
