About

For over 30 years, Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, - Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

    Off the Hook!

by GMary on 9/21/09Birchmere - Alexandria

I agreed to see Johnny Winter so my boyfriend would agree to go with me to see Little Richard. My expectations were low--after all, I was along for the ride. Boy was I wrong! I was so wrong we're going to see Johnny Winter AGAIN in early December. If you like slide guitar blues rock-n-roll, do NOT miss this show.

    Winter Rocks

by heavyman on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Johhny still has it. It was a mostly rock & roll show which was surprising. The rest of the band was very tight and the backup guitar had some great licks. The finale of Highway 61 Revisited and the cover of Red House were highlights. Lone Wolf and Blackjack were excellent too.

Johnny Winter is a must see show.

    by Blues51 on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

As a boogie guitarist, I've followed JW since the 60's. Stole some things from his playing style. But NO ONE can touch him, even at this place in his life. He played "Highway 61 revisited" even faster last night than the original recording...and it was fast then. He doesn't scream anymore, but his voice is still perfect for the music he plays. Band is great backing him up. Got a young guitarist who needs an idol? Take him. Set up front...watch his fingers. Seldom uses the pinkie....still amazing with a slide. If he and Leon Redbone ever end up on the same stage....you'll find out all about baby boomers and their music. Greatest boogie guitarist I've heard, especially with just a thumbpick. And the show keeps on trucking..you can't stop clapping and tapping.

    Johnny Winter still THE Gunslinger!

by bornu on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

I've been a Winter fan for many years, and he never disappoints. The band was the best I've seen him with since the AND days, which included Rick Derringer. Johnny's guitar work has not diminished at all, though the years have frailed him a bit physically. The legendary licks were as hot as they ever were. The audience was very appreciative as Johnny burned thru many of his classics, and some unexpected treats, including Red House, a Hendrix classic. For the uninitiated, Johnny is every bit a contemporary and equal of Jimi Hendrix. He stands among the very few titans of the second wave of Rock and Roll, which came after Chuck Berry and Little Richard (if you dispute this information, see the movie Cadillac Records) - but I digress - in conclusion, Johnny Winter is a MUST SEE for anyone who thinks they are a fan of Rock and Roll. The music was just awesome and amazing and spine tingling! NOTE: The Birchmere has the best crabcake inside the DC beltway!!!

The old man's still rockin !

    by ally602 on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

When the house lights went down and the anticipation went up. The stage lights came up and the emcee announced, "the Johnny Winter band" and the band members came on the stage and started playing and then being led in by his aide, looking somewhat frail, he comes in the back door and was led to center stage and the chair waiting for him. He picked up his guitar and all hell broke loose. It was then I was quickly reminded why I was there. The old man's still rockin'. He was singing his songs and playing his guitar with that unique style that IS Johnny Winter. He played songs from throughout his career as far back as the remake of the Babby Womack hit "It's all over now" that he recorded over 30 years ago. With a top flight and talented band behind him, Johnny rocked the house and we were treated to the blues rock stylings of a guitar legend. I was glad to be there at the "Birchmere", which is one of the greatest places to see a show, to see and hear a little piece of guitar history. Thank you Johnny.

    Johnny Winter

by harleytwo on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

The Johnny Winter show could have been amazing were it not for the fact that the sound was so loud that his real talent was drowned out. Has the man lost his hearing? Several people walked out to go sit in the bar and watch it on the TV screens. The Birchmere is one of the best venues in town, but with the sound Mr. Winter & Company were making, they would have been better off playing at RFK. And where were the Blues numbers? One Ray Charles song and a whole lot of repetitive bee bop. Very disappointing show.

    still the best

by trik on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

That little country boy can still play! I have seen him each year, and he seems to be getting stronger. Encore with Highway 61 revisited still as good as it gets. I do wish they would change the playlist which seemed virtually identical to last year, and play some more of the songs he did back in the day such as Johhny b goode, jumping jack flash, good morning little school girl, even johnny guitar (missing this year). Still an awesome show. Thanks to Paul Nelson for helping him out of the issues he had so we can continue to appreciate him

    Still Alive and Well

by KROK on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Johnny might be sitting, but he is still rocking. Rather than playing all blues, he played several rocking hits. The blues were also great.. Not a slow moment in the show. The back up band was tight. He might be having physical problems, but musically he's back on track. Plenty loud, so if you have sensitive ears put in some cotton. The Birchmere is a great place to see a show. Food prices are a little high but huge portions. This show is a must for his fans.

    Awesome!!!

by Gittarboy on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

The man has still got it! While Johnny may have to have a bit of assistance getting to the chair on stage, once he was seated, blues and the best git tar came blasting out. Love that little guitar Johnny uses. Red House, Bony Marony, Highway 61... all came off as fresh as the day they were originated. Birchmere is the premier place to catch the best shows. Love Johnny Winter and love the Birchmere. Cudos to the Birchmere for providing a great place, with great food and drinks, and for booking great acts that are still around.

    Outstanding musicians

by Cressie on 9/20/09Birchmere - Alexandria

I'd always wanted to see a performance at the Birchmere, but this was my first time. I loved the venue for simplicity--no big gimmicky razzle dazzle, just great musicians in an intimate setting. Johnny Winter's band played consistently great music. It is rare to listen to 4 musicians who play as well together and who are as individually accomplished.

Johnny Winter at BB Kings 9/18/09

by strat1400 on 9/18/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Johnny Winter can still play the blues like 30 years ago. Most of the time he didn't even look at the guitar ,but his fingers knew just where to go! Bonie Moroni,Mojo Boogie,Highway 61,etc..was the theme of the set.TOTAL BLUES.I was a little disappointed he did'nt play any of the 70's progressive rock stuff like Rock N Roll Hootchie Koo,Still Alive N Well and any of the Johnny Winter And albums when he played with Rick Derringer. And none of Rolling Stones covers that he does so well. But all in all if you're a Johnny fan you wont be disappointed, the band is tight and talented. And Johnny didn't miss a note!
