About

Johnny Marr found worldwide fame in the 80s with cult British band The Smiths. One of Britain's most famous guitarists, Marr has played in a number of successful bands such as Modest Mouse and The Cribs as well as becoming a renowned session musician.

After playing in a few bands and performing the odd solo gig in his mid-teens, Marr formed The Smiths with a poet and singer called Morrissey at the age of 18. They wrote the songs together and the band that formed in 1982 went on to become one of the truly iconic British acts of the 80s. Hit albums such as the self-titled The Smiths in 1984, Meat is Murder in 1985, The Queen is Dead in 1986 and finally Strangeways - Here We Come in 1987 became albums that helped define the era. Their music helped bring the guitar sound back to the mainstream, and their songs proudly stood as a musical backlash against the synth-pop chart music of the time. In 1987, creative differences led to the band splitting up, but thankfully their five-year run of huge success and critically acclaimed albums had already established Johnny Marr as one of the most influential songwriters and performers of the decade.

Marr stayed incredibly busy after The Smiths' time was up, playing sessions with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney and both recording and touring with established bands such as The Pretenders and The The. Essentially, from 1987 until 2002 Johnny Marr worked with everyone who was anyone in the UK music industry. Collaborations included working with Billy Bragg, Talking Heads, The Pet Shop Boys, Kirsty MacColl and Black Grape. He also made a special one-off appearance playing with Oasis in 2001, as well as working with them on some album tracks in the studio.

In more recent years he has toured and played with Modest Mouse extensively, including supporting R.E.M. on their US tour. Johnny is also a member of occasional super-group Seven Worlds Collide, which is made up from members of Radiohead, Crowded House and Pearl Jam. Together they have recorded a number of tracks to raise money for Oxfam. He also plays with The Healers and The Cribs, touring whenever he can. His solo album, The Messenger, was released through Warner Brothers in 2013 and Marr continues to be one of the very best live and studio artists.

An amazing showman with incredible talent.

by ChrBert on 5/23/19House of Blues San Diego presented by Cricket Wireless - San Diego

This is only my second time seeing him and frankly, I’d love to be able to follow him around on tour like many other fans do. He is truly a legend in the alternative realm. His guitar playing is unmistakable and flawless. If you are or ever were a fan of The Smiths, he accommodates your need to relive your 80’s teenage youth while still challenging your intellect with new amazing songs that are very relevant today. Johnny Marr is amazing. He plays to his crowd and is engaged the whole time. My only wish is he’d play longer. I really could listen to him all night!

The true definition of a real Rock Star

by C on 5/22/19House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

Johnny Marr rocks from beginning to end, and he doesn’t have to do any Smith’s songs, because his music alone is awesome. But, seeing him do a few of the classic Smith’s songs is just the icing on the cake. A definitely must see show, at least I know I will when he comes around. It was great to see him doing some old Electronic songs, would like to see him perform more

    Hell yeah

by eschot on 5/18/19VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's Casino North Kansas City - Kansas City

Marr hasn’t missed a beat since his Smiths days. The band is tight and Marr’s playing is so spot on. A half dozen Smiths songs along with Electronic and solo material was played. The music came alive and the crowd completely got into it. Marr doesn’t play the Midwest often and as a big fan it was just an awesome experience. Go to his show. You won’t regret seeing him at all

    great guest, good show

by howie Y on 5/13/19The Paramount - Huntington

Johnny has great stage presence, the band was good. The light show was really amazing! -really in sync with the music. Good set list. Really nice venue. Overall good show. I think it would have been interesting if the band threw in an acoustic guitar once in a while for a textural difference/tone.

    Surprising,,,but,

by E Mankcin on 5/9/19The Paramount - Huntington

i didn't know what to expect going to see this show. i was totally unfamiliar with Johnny's solo material and found it to be quite engaging. His presentation of The Smiths material was really well done. i find it incredible that when talking to people about The Smiths that mostly everybody is Morrisey this and Morrisey that and blah blah blah, and they don't even realize that Johnny Marr was the architect behind the shaping of their sound. and speaking of sound, i was surprised that the sound at the venue this night was pretty good because ( here comes the "but") i cannot understand how this place continually gets voted as a top venue on L.I. The sound and acoustics at this place SUCK. i've seen numerous shows here and more often than not the mix sounds like mud. You can't differentiate from one instrument to the next. The fact that the place is predominately exposed brick walls and metal rafters certainly doesn't help. When this place was The IMAC, it was a great place to see a show, but since the redesign (to generate more dollars) it sucks.

    Nostalgia and Newness

by The boy on 5/9/19The Paramount - Huntington

Songs old and new, solo and Smiths (and Electronic) all sounded fantastic. His positive gracious energy made it a wonderful emotional evening. Now you and Moz need to suck it up and play a few shows together with Andy and yes Mike. It will do all concerned Karmic good and just needs to happen before its too late.

Johnn Marr was awesome, his guitar style is so unique

by J. Beans on 5/9/19The Paramount - Huntington

Johnny Marr is one of the most gifted guitarists in my opinion. His music sounds georgeous live. His new album is really good. He did some Smiths songs and frankly Mr. Shankly, I didn't miss Morrisey at all. Go see him live!!!!

    Johnny “ F’ing” Marr

by Iandoh on 10/25/18Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

Johnny was amazing I ‘ve seen him twice before, but he was on top of his game. He did six smiths songs plus 2 Electronic songs. Great mix of songs but focus on the new album “ call the comet” worth the effort to hear him play.

    Sounded great!

by GreekGoddess on 10/25/18Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

We were seated in a VIP area at the back of the venue, one step up so we could easily see over everyone in front of us. More importantly, we were right behind the soundboard so the sound quality was amazing! Johnny Marr put on a great show with enough Smiths songs to help us relive the 80s. The venue staff was great; our server was very personable and professional.

Johnny Marr - the man behind the music of The Smiths. A collection of new songs, as well as some classics - who ever thought we would hear Mr Marr playing his smiths classics, as only he can.

    Guitar God Johnny Marr

by Chuckster13 on 10/24/18Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Johnny Marr brought his Call the Comet tour to the Paradise, and he never disappoints. The opportunity to see a true guitar legend in a small venue like the Paradise is an event that shouldn't be missed. The VIP Meet and Greet package was well organized and worth every penny. The staff at the Paradise is always cool and respectful, and I would have given the venue 5 stars if they didn't have those damn concrete poles, but they are part of the club's storied charm. I've been seeing shows at the Paradise since the mid-80s, and it truly is one of my favorite venues. I saw Johnny's last tour, Playland, in 2016 at the Paradise as well, and this tour was just as good, if not better. He and his band sounded crisp and he seemed to really be enjoying himself, despite being on the tail end of a hectic North America tour. The setlist included songs from his new album, some solo gems, two classics from Electronic, and six songs from The Smiths catalog. A truly memorable night.

    Johnny Marr!

by BClaire on 10/24/18Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Great show - Johnny Marr really delivers. It was a great blend of new material and older songs, and Johnny has a terrific sense of humor: "Here's a new song..." and launches into How Soon Is Now. Parking for the Paradise is just getting worse and worse. The parking spots near the venue are dwindling and it takes 10 - 15 minutes of circling around the area to find a spot.

The preformance was excellent, and the sound was good, unlike venues run by The 9:30 Club or the Anthem.
