If you are the kind of person who understands the vital role that music plays in the film industry, and can appreciate John Williams's impact, inspiration, uniqueness and iconic genius in this field, then this is the concert for you. Conductor David Newman started the evening briefly informing newbies about how film composing is an art form in and of itself. Then he conducted the first half: whisking us through lyrical renditions of Michael Giacchino's 'Star Trek, Into Darkness' (with the entire opening Save-Spock-From-The-Volcano sequence playing on screen), Nino Rota's 'The Godfather' (accompanied by clips from the 3 Godfather films), Bernard Hermann's AMAZING Fandango score to 'North By Northwest,' John Williams's 1993 score to 'Sabrina' (too gorgeous for words), the 'Mission Impossible' score (sounded like the Giacchino version), and Franz Waxman's 'Sunset Boulevard,' with clips from that film as well. Truly wonderful. After the intermission, the maestro entered to thunderous applause. He thrilled us with 'E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial,' 'Superman', a 'Star Wars: Episodes 1-6' medley, Rey's Theme from 'The Force Awakens,' The Asteroid Field and Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme) from 'The Empire Strikes Back,' and many other memorable and GASP-worthy musical works from the more popular films his music graced. A surprisingly, soft-spoken and humble man, I couldn't have been happier to listen to him talk about his start in music, his experiences, and his crush on Daisy Ridley. As he conducted each score, I could barely refrain from conducting along with him, singing and dancing in my seat. The only things WRONG with this evening, if I had to search for one, was that it wasn't long enough! There were so many other scores I would have loved to listen to live. This concert is great for kids. Great for musicians. Great for movie-buffs. See it if you can. You will be glad you did.
My first time seeing this series at the Bowl and it did not disappoint. It's a very popular show now a days but I was able to find one last single seat ticket, well worth it though. I wish I could have taken others to experience it. Highly recommend it if you enjoy movie scores and Star Wars of Course. Bring your own light saber and add to the show!
It was a wonderful evening. Beautifully orchestrated. Love how the music perfectly aligned with the films. I just wanted to go back and watch every single one of them again. This performance just proves how the music makes the movies. It takes you back to the feelings and emotions you felt when you saw them for the first time. Without the music, you would never have or feel the impact that the director wants you to feel. Loved the light heartedness of the light sabers. Everyone there felt a part of the moment.
Without question John Williams is a living legend. In my humble opinion the greatest film composer of all time. Seeing this master at the Hollywood Bowl is the perfect setting for such an amazing talent. Add the Star Wars music to this and only one word can describe the evening perfect.
Pure awesome. Absolutely spectacular hearing and watching this legend in real life. Played a range of classics.
Love the performance. John Williams is and always will be outstanding in my book. Great production. Going with a group of folks enhances the experience.
This is my third year seeing John Williams at the Hollywood Bowl, and he never, ever fails to disappoint. One of my favorite nights of the entire year.
What an unbelievable night I had! Seats were great, music was to die for, and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. There was also a "Salute to Paramount" including many pieces that weren't John's along with clips of classic movies to match. I will absolutely go next year!
John Williams is the man. His music was amazing live and the crowd couldn't get enough. Can't wait to see him again!
Incredible night under the stars waiting for the film scores with conductor David Louis Newman, son of Alfred. He was funny and delightful. Then the light sabers came out and it was amazing when John Williams entered. He delighted the crowd and with the light sabers accompanying the music it was magical. He is a marvel at 84. Could not ask for a better night with three encores. Waiting for next year.
The concert was fabulous as always. We never miss his concert at the Bowl. Opening conductor was very nervous speaking in front of audience or very unprepared to speak about the music to the point of being uncomfortable for him. He would have done better to just play the music and forget about the back story which he was totally unfamiliar with. But John Williams certainly made up for it. Bravo
I love seeing John Williams. I have seen him for years at the Hollywood Bowl and it is always a highlight of the summer. I was surprised that we didn't get to see him until the second half of the show. They really should have had him come out for one number, then introduce David Newman, and come back again during the second half. Although I enjoyed David Newman's half, I would have liked it better if he played all John Williams music. That is why I was there. More John Williams please!
We all had the most incredible time at the John Williams evening. It was truly magical and hearing John Williams speak and watching him conduct was unforgettable. We will go every year! My son was beaming the whole time, the energy was unreal.
Saw this show for the very first time in Hollywood this past weekend. At first I was a little disappointed that John Williams didn't perform his hits from movies like Raiders of the Lost Arc and Jurassic Park, but oh my god he definitely made up for it! He played songs from The BFG, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and my favorite: ET The Extraterrestrial! Wow! If you plan on going, I recommend you take your light saber and pull it out during the Star Wars pieces!! You won't regret it!
5 stars for John Williams and the LA Phil. The pre intermission portion was very good as well but the conductor seemed off?
This was a wonderful concert and the acoustic is great. Jhon Williams is my favorite.
It had been quite awhile since I went to see Mr. John Williams at the Hollywood Bowl. And I must say, it was just as amazing now as it was then! It was a wonderful treat no matter where one sat. I truly believe everyone who is a fan of any Spielberg or Lucas movie should indeed go see John Williams conduct our L.A. Philharmonic to play his movie scores. Thank you John for a lifetime of incredible music that will endure for eternity!
A sea of light sabers will foretell the evening! David Newman and John Williams with the fabulous LA Phil delivered a stellar performance. Worth every penny.
John Williams is a God, there's no denying it. But going to this concert you would think the only movie he ever composed was Star Wars. It had fine music, but in my honest opinion he has had much more impressive musical accomplishments with many of his other scores which I was really hoping to hear. Home Alone, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and many more. The scores were barely touched but to be honest with you, I'm the crowd fill of waving Lifesavers, or sabers....I really doubt they were many true film score fans are there. Williams even commented on it. Next time I see him it won't be at the bowl. The first hour with Danny Newman however flew by. Godfather and Sunset Boulevard were absolutely exquisite. I was really expecting more of that in the second hour. Not a Star Wars Fest. But hey. I guess everybody has to go to where the money is. But I feel bad for William, because a composer half his age is doing music from movies that William probably likes a lot more than Star Wars
