John Prine on Tour

John Prine has been regarded as one of America's foremost musical storytellers since the 1970s. Although his reputation looms large, when he strolls unassumingly onto a stage, his vibe is more like an amiable next-door neighbor just hopping the fence to commandeer a corner of your porch, ready with an anecdote. So even though Prine classics like "Angel From Montgomery," "Sam Stone" and "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" have been beloved by generations of fans and covered countless times by everybody from Bonnie Raitt to The Lemonheads, Prine delivers them in concert with a disarmingly casual air, as though these masterworks of Americana were no big deal. Of course when they hit you, there's no denying just how big a deal his idiosyncratic but accessible tunes are.

John Prine in Concert

At the start of the 1970s, when the singer/songwriter boom was at its strongest, it was no less esteemed a talent than Kris Kristofferson who spotted the unusual gift of a young Midwestern troubadour named John Prine and helped him land his first record deal. Prine's self-titled 1971 debut LP remains an American classic, combining complex notions with catchy country/folk melodies and a naturalistic but poetic approach to lyric writing. Many of its songs, like "Illegal Smile," "Hello in There," "Sam Stone" and "Angel from Montgomery" became part of the singer/songwriter canon, and were covered for decades. Over the years, Prine sometimes dipped more into rock 'n' roll or veered further into country, but he never lost the core of his genius. In later days, his releases have been more sporadic, but he's never quit bringing his tunes to the people. Even after enduring some serious health issues, he emerged on top and continues touring and recording throughout the 2010s with as much elan as ever.

by Irishgal on 7/15/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Our evening at Red Rocks started at Shiprock Grille. We then proceded to our seats which were in the front row, center! What a great show...Levon Helm and his band were absolutely fantastic! And, what can I say - John Prine never fails to put on a terrific show - we all had a great time and can't wait for next year!

    who headlined?

by beeinboulder on 7/15/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

john prine and levon helm are obviously masters and survivors, and both have a huge repertoire. and not to take away from john prine, but Levon with his full band clearly had the energy and variety to be the headlining act.

    john prine captivating as always!

by liasonnurse on 7/15/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

He's such a great storyteller and he played a lot of his older songs that have become such favorites among the Prine followers. He was charming, funny and so entertaining. He's my favorite performer to go see in person. He just makes you feel good!

    Wonderful Times!

by ThePixieCat on 7/15/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I forgot how much I love seeing shows at Chastain! Amazing atmosphere! I was amazed that there weren't more people at the show. Our "courtesy shuttle" from the hotel was a Lincoln Navigator stretch limo--not too shabby!

    Great show, great venue

by GoMocs on 7/15/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

This was my first time both seeing John Prine and visiting Chastain Park, and I could not have been more pleased with either experience. John was just as great as I could have hoped - playing most of my favorites and a couple songs i had never heard, and mixing in the great stories and humor that Prine shows are famous for. He had a tremendous energy and played for nearly 2 hours, and he had the audience hanging on his every word the entire time. For any Prine fans out there or even just fans of great songwriting, if you havent seen John Prine live in concert... DO IT! It's an experience you'll never forget, and it's worth every penny.

    Still Incredible!

by Senseiken on 7/15/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

This was the 7th time I've seen John Prine. And as usual, it was incredible. John is a living legend. There is no one performing today that has written and performed more great songs than him and he plays them well. There were several songs I wish he had played but I understand when you've got that many songs you can't play them all. Chastain Park is partly the cause of that. They have an ordinance that shuts shows down at 11:00pm. The Levon Helm Band was an excellent opening act. Levon's still as good as he was with the Band.

    John Prine

by finz45 on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I have been a fan of John Prine since the early '80's. He is an amazing guitar player and one of the great singer/songwriters of my generation. His songs continue to endure with time. He has been able to overcome major health issues and his voice is as strong as ever. The weather was great and the night was magical... ' Truly s living legend.

John Prine & Levon Helm: Atlanta June '09

by jeremylr on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Setlist & Review 1. Spanish Pipedream (was getting my pic with '80s/'90s BAND lead guitarist Jim Weider, who decided to play with Levon on his current tour (hasn't done a tour with him in 10 years, so I only heard this song from a distance while making my way through the venue; might be one of my Top 5 Prine songs so far, so I wished I'd moved faster to my seat 2. Picture Show 3. Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore (John talked about playing with Steve Earle in D.C. the night before, singing a bunch of patriotic songs. He said he thought he had 1 more left (Flag Decal). 4. Six O'Clock News (one of very few I didn't know that evening, but lady next to me was a huge Prine fan, so I quickly got titles I didn't know) 5. Souvenirs (John said it was for Steve Goodman). Band Intros 6. Grandpa Was A Carpenter (John: Unlike most of my songs, that was a true story). 7. Fish & Whistle (John: I was almost done with one of my records until my producer asked me to write 1 more song. I said I'd write the worst song I could. Now, after playing it a couple hundred times, I think I finally like it). 8. Glory Of True Love (One of my [reviewer's] favorite from "Fair & Square" '05: John: mentions co-writer Roger Cook & Roger's difficulty pronouncing "R's." He also said that he preferred writing alone. He also humorously told the audience he worried during the songwriting process that Roger was writing the song about John's wife). 9. All The Best (didn't know this song at all but liked it) 10. Angel From Montgomery (for Bonnie Raitt) Band Exits, leaving John to perform with just his acoustic guitar 11. Donald & Lydia 12. Dear Abby (crowd does sing-along: during the song John relates that the final verse about sitting in the backseat of the car with his girlfriend was a true story, then he said that songwriters never like resorting to the truth & proceeds to sing that verse: Final Line........Signed, Remarried!) 13. That's The Way That The World Goes 'Round 14. Sam Stone (BAND RETURNS ABOUT MIDWAY & REMAIN FOR REST OF EVENING; bass player's use of bow on stand-up bass was excellent choice) 15. Bear Creek Blues 16. She Is My Everything (from 5 or so songs I have from "Fair & Square," this & "Glory Of True Love" are favorites: only time John switches to electric guitar: for his wife Fiona; she's in Nashville tonight, so I'll have to sing loud) 17. Ain't Hurtin' Nobody (he takes off his coat & tie before beginning this song; when he sang the line "50 Million Elvis Fans Can't Be All Wrong," he got some shouts from the crowd (reviewer is a big Elvis fan) After the above song, a lady hollered out a request: "Illegal Smile." She did this earlier, too. John acknowledged her by telling her to sing along with the record) 18. Hello In There (hearing the bow used on the stand-up bass really set an atmosphere for the song; at the conclusion, John goes ahead & unpacks his shirt) 19. Lake Marie Encore 20. Paradise (for the encore, his brother comes out (don't remember his name;) John introduced him as his little brother, but he was much bigger & taller than John; Also, Larry Campbell (fiddle) & Jim Weider (electric guitar) from Levon's band come & play on this song; during song's last verse, John's brother takes the spotlight, singing it to a round of applause. I went to this concert because of Levon Helm due to his work with The Band & his recent solo albums. In fact, I heard about this show exactly 1 week before it occurred. The name "John Prine" has always been familiar to me, maybe because I saw him on PBS when I was younger (I'm 25), but I was one of those people who couldn't name 1 song he had recorded or written. However, that first began to change a couple of months ago while I compiled an Everly Brothers' playlist of some of their greatest songs. "Paradise" was one of them. I decided to download a list of John's greatest songs along with those he's been playing recently in his setlist. I found myself really liking what I heard. By the time June 6th rolled around, I definitely knew I was going to attend a concert I would remember. By the way, my plan of compiling recent setlists of John's concerts worked pretty well. The only song I didn't know was "All The Best" from 1991's "Missing Years" LP, but I've got it now from iTunes. "Flag Decal" was actually a surprise, since I hadn't seen it in John's recent setlists here on the Shrine, but I immediately recognized the title, & it got a good reaction from the Atlanta crowd. "Grandpa Was A Carpenter" & "Dear Abby" are 2 songs I admire. I luckily added them to my playlist earlier this week based on their appearances on 1976's "Prime Prine" greatest hits LP. I didn't expect John to perform these songs since they too weren't listed on his recent setlists (maybe that's just because I'm a new fan). "Dear Abby" went over well & perhaps got the most laughs of the evening. I drove about 3.5 hours from South GA to the concert venue in Atlanta. The Chastain Amphitheater has a weird set-up to me; tables for 6 fill up the floor, followed by boxes with rows & then just rows as you get farther away from the stage. People could also sit on the lawn if they wished. The venue wasn't full by any means. Maybe I can find out later how many people were there. John played 1 hour & 42 minutes, concluding just before 11:00 PM. With all the great things about the show, I was really disappointed that Levon didnt' come out & sing/play with John. My understanding was they were going to do 2 "special" shows this summer, & fans could expect a collaboration of some sort. An opportunity missed. At least Campbell & Weider played on "Paradise." Another thing: I tried to take pics, but security immediately said no photos. That's one thing that always irks me. They never went out into the audience to reprimand other concert-goers; they just sat & watched the 1st few rows of people. I did get some, though, but most of them came during Levon's hour before I was told to stop. I especially enjoyed the back-up instrumentation, although I sometimes thought drums might be nice on some songs, since I had only heard the studio versions before attending the show, but that's only a tiny complaint. On the other hand, it gave many of the songs he performed a fresh slant. It was very nice of John to mention his band members' names more than once during the evening & praise their amazing musical abilities. It's amazing to me that John performed 8 songs from his debut "John Prine" LP from 1971 (were 13 on it). In comparison, he sang 3 songs from 2005's "Fair & Square" album. I wonder if he's ever sang any from 2007's "Standard Songs For Average People" in concert. In summary, I'd recommend seeing a John Prine to any fan of music. I'm glad I attended it for sure.

    Wishes Granted!

by domisol on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I began listening to Prine in 72 but this was the frist 'live' experience thus far. Twice previously I have purchased tickets only to have the show cancel due to slow sales. I hoped beyound hope that JP would perform a 'greatest hits' type concert and that's exactly what I got! From beginning to end this was a golden performance. The artist sounded better than his recordings. His choice to perform sans drums lent to the sense that his voice was the prominent instrument of expression onstage. Every note, phrase, dynamic and rhythm was for the presentation of the expressive lyric. His artistry as a songwriter was appropriately heralded and each morsel of art was gobbled up by the audience as if they'ed all been as hungry for this particular concert as I. You could hear a pin drop in an amplitheatre often accosted for its audiences' inappropriate lack of respect for such art. This performance will go down in my musical notes as a shining 'Souveneir'!

    John Prine always a winner!!

by heathermerlot on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

This is the second year in a row we've seen John Prine @ Chastain. He delivers his magical music with a strong voice & tight back-up from his band, although many of his songs are simply acoustic, the audience was ready for a night of sing-a-long. Hope he comes back next year!

by stokedgirl on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Levon Helm opened and it was like finally getting to see The Band in person for the first time. The acoustics at Chastain were perfect, not too loud. John Prine is just incredible, exactly what we'd all hoped for!

    Prine is great as ever

by btrain on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

This was the umpteenth time I have seen Prine live. While his setlists don't change that much, he always put on a great show. If you love songwriters, you will love John Prine. His songs are on par with the best songwriter out there (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen). If you have the opportunity I would definitely recommend seeing him live.

    Prine like wine....

by RoyL on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Prine like wine just gets better with age. The timeless messages from his lyrics seem to gain relevence and effectiveness, slicing through the heart as if every delivery by the master is a swipe of the knife over a whetstone.

    John Prine is amazing

by barteringlines on 7/14/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

This was spectacular being that Levon Helm opened for John Prine only in Atlanta. Review is for Prine but Levon had the best album of last year IMO therefore it was a special treat. Both Levon and Prine have overcome great adversity to play and sing for us again and are true geniuses at what they do. John Prine has not missed a beat at being able to connect with his audience the way very few peformers do and is one of the greatest songwriters of our time. I do not want to miss a single note he sings live if I can help it.
