JOHN OATES IN CONCERT:

One half of legendary rock and soul duo Hall & Oates, John Oates has graced airwaves and stages around the world with his inspired singing and guitar playing. As a solo artist Oates turns in captivating performances that focus on his gifts for songwriting and his effortless showmanship to form a genuine connection with his audience. This troubadour knows how to give fans what they want, tearing through powerful solo material as well as perennial Hall & Oates favorites like “Maneater”, “Kiss on My List”, and “You Make My Dreams”. With his 2013 album Good Road to Follow still fresh in ticket buyers’ minds, Oates will hit the road in 2015 for a string of solo dates as well a highly anticipated tour with his musical soulmate Daryl Hall.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in New York City in 1948, John Oates was a professional backing player in folk and soul bands before he even graduated high school. In addition to his work as a backing musician, he cut his first solo single “I Need Your Love” in 1966 before enrolling at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in school he met senior classmate and fellow professional musician Daryl Hall. The two hit it off and began writing and performing together, leading to a string of records in the early ‘70s. Hall & Oates’ first hit came in 1976 with “Sara Smile” and was followed by six No. 1 hits including “Rich Girl”, “Private Eyes”, and “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)”. Despite the duo’s massive global success and Oates’ own skills as a producer, he didn’t release his solo debut until 2002’s well-received Phunk Shui. Since then he has released four studio and three live albums while continuing to record and tour as a member of Hall & Oates.

    A night to remember

by Larry on 4/19/23Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

The performance mr Mr Oates was wonderful. His talent and strong voice set the stage for this special performer. Talked and told a lot of background of the songs he played. He didn’t even need to follow his set list cause he changed it all for the crowd and how he was feeling. It felt like he was in our living room with us. So glad we made it to this great show. Thanks and God Bless

    Disappointed

by Unknown on 4/19/23Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

I was disappointed because I thought he would sing more of the oldies songs, but that did not happen

    Wonderful

by Lesley on 4/19/23Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Great show. John is an accomplished guitarist and his voice was clear and strong. It’s basically just two guys, John playing an acoustic guitar with a drummer also named John who sang backup vocals. They had a strong bond between them that was evident, obvious that they were longtime friends who could anticipate each other’s next move. Don’t expect a full set of old music, he sings a mix of some cover songs and lots of his own new music plus of few of the old hits but in acoustic form. Plus he told stories about his song writing process and some other funny stories, very entertaining. He is well worth seeing and still has so much to offer. I would see him again.

    John Oates in Napa

by Bassett Hound on 4/19/23Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

It was held in a small venue--Uptown Theater...and they did not sell any seats in the back which made it seem like you were having a one on one visit with John Oates. His talents often seem overshadowed when he is with Hall and Oates...but on his own...very solid. A delightful evening...some of his old and new work and, of course, some solo Hall and Oates songs.

    Good but!!!

by Colinolingo on 4/19/23Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

John is a very talented musician and great story teller and his stories were in site full, but his set only consisted of four hall and oats songs and that was disappointing, not that I expected all hall and oats, but more than four songs

    Trapp and Oates

by L.A. on 1/22/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

Great show. A veteran performer and a hot shot guitarist combine to bring a refreshing take on the Singer Songwriter genre. Great stories and even better playing from both John and Guthrie!

    Unexpected!

by Newfan on 1/22/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

I've seen Hall and Oates many times. Not knowing what to expect but bought 2nd row seats. We were up close and personal - John Oates and a very talented Guthrie Trapp (who has a great sense of humor). It was like being in John's living room getting personal story-telling session and trip down the world of John and his musical history. Also, John has stayed relevant and continues to release new music which is pretty damn good! What a wonderful evening with "cool daddy", John Oates!

Great venue to see this talented duo with acoustic guitars play in a "living room" setting. Both are amazing guitarists and performed different genres of music.

Saw him last year when opening for Beth Hart and they were amazing. Totally different set this time. Boring.

John Oates takes the Hall & Oates out of his show

by John Oates does not care about entertaining the fans on 1/22/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

Have you ever heard someone say "I am a huge John Oates fan"? No. Have you heard someone say that about Hall & Oates? Half of America maybe! So when he played his own show he decided to avoid H&O songs almost completely and play the few he did in reggae or different interpretations. It was painful. He also spent half the show talking and his sidekick from Alabama is impossible to understand with his twang. This was a New Orleans bar type performance not a $100 ticket ina big venue performance. Very disappointing. Save your money and crank the H&O on your stereo for free!

    Not what I expected/ unsatisfied

by R. M. on 5/31/22Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center - Chester

I purchased balcony seats, that section was closed, they put us all in one room, I could barely see the show. I was very disappointed.

    Great Show

by Chris on 5/30/22Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center - Chester

A great evening of acoustic guitar and insights into the evenings song choices. John Oates is a legend but Guthrie Trapp is also a giant in acoustic guitar circles. A big part of the performance is the audience and this audience was completely engaged and loving every minute of the show. I look forward to seeing them again. OME did a great job of making everyone feel welcome - kudos to them as well.

    Pretty cool!

    by Anza on 3/25/22

I saw Oates in Maryland at the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper club which was a nice venue. Everyone was very helpful and the atmosphere was lovely. We got there just as the concert had begun and the volume was good. Oates was quite interactive and even played a song he hadn't played in years because someone wanted him to. The guitarist, Guthrie Trapp was amazing. I didn't know many of the songs but once they got to the 80s, I knew a few. I'm not their biggest fan but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

    Fantastic show!

by KB on 12/4/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Always loved Hall & Oates. Was not sure what this show would be. But happen to know the drummer for this band and decided to go. Was very pleased and enjoyed the show very much. Oates was great. The music was great, new and old! The band was out of this world. The show was fun and had a great sound! Would highly recommend to young and old!

John Oates from Philly to Nashville!

by A. J. on 11/27/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

The Red Clay Strays from Mobile opened the show. Elvis meets Southern Soul! They got the evening off to a great start. I have been a fan of John’s since the 70’s. I own their first album before Abandoned Luncheonette. John brings a soulful infused with Mississippi delta blues. I loved Lose it in Louisiana. Most of the music came from his most release Arkansas.

    Loved Every Minute

by JaxGirl on 11/27/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Although I knew the music would not be the usual Hall and Oats genre, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this concert. Music from the 1920's to original compositions were wonderful. John Oats relates well with the crowd and his band members are extraordinary musicians...John, too! Great evening and I love the more intimate venue. His new CD "Arkansas" should be a success.
