About

John Mellencamp in Concert

John Mellencamp has been bringing his brand of American heartland rock to fans since the late '70s, when his raw, rootsy sound set him apart from the arena rockers in vogue at the time. The Midwestern twang that adds to his signature vocal style also informs his songs, as he details the ups and downs of the everyday working folks he grew up among. The rough-and-ready roots-rock sound he perfected on milestone '80s albums like ‘American Fool’ and ‘Scarecrow’ has remained a crucial touchstone for Mellencamp's concerts, regardless of where he falls in the roots–rock spectrum at any given phase. And when he delivers classics like "Jack & Diane," "Pink Houses," "Small Town," or "Hurts So Good," he digs deep for a gritty, from-the-gut delivery that connects with his audiences in an immediate, visceral way. From his 2017 Sad Clowns and Hillbillies tour with guests Emmylou Harris and Carlene Carter to his 2018 Other People's Stuff tour, Mellencamp's latter-day outings have shown that the veteran road dog only gets tougher and more determined.

John Mellencamp Background

John Mellencamp was born in Indiana in 1951, and worked with a series of bands throughout his teens, but in the mid '70s he managed to hook up with David Bowie manager Tony DeFries, which led to his first record deal, under the name Johnny Cougar. He scored his first hit, the rocking "I Need a Lover," in 1979, but it was his 1982 album ‘American Fool’ that really broke him through to the big time. The massive hits "Jack & Diane" and "Hurts So Good" made him a bona fide rock star. On subsequent '80s albums like ‘Uh-huh’ and ‘Scarecrow,’ Mellencamp (finally working under his own surname) developed the sharp, sociopolitical side of his lyrical sensibilities. On songs like "Pink Houses," "Small Town," and "Scarecrow," he sang of and for the working people who are the heart and soul of America, and Mellencamp became an American icon in the process. But despite his Grammy award, his mega-Platinum record sales, and his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame membership, Mellencamp has never lost sight of the people who put him where he is, and they're still the focus of his music.

    John Mellencamp too short!

by mokev on 7/20/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

After watching Mellencamp at DTE (Pine Knob) theater for years, and listening to him complain over and over again about having to be done by 11:00pm no matter how long he wanted to play, we thought we were in for a great, long concert at the Colosseum at Caesars. HA! Weren't we sorely disappointed when he only played for 1 hour, 20 minutes. The concert was over @ 9:40pm. The Colosseum was a nice venue for a concert but we are done watching John Mellencamp in person because either he is complaining or we are!!

Mellencamp puts on an awesome show as usual.

by tberry007 on 7/19/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

The concert was awesome. Would prefer more old stuff, but anytime there is anew album it the norm to hear new stuff. Acoustics in the Colosseum were great. I guess being Caesar's I expected more esthetically of the room. But overall it was good.

    cougar rocked

by ferdie on 7/18/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

John Mellencamp put on a wonderful show in Windsor. He always has a top notch band and his solo acoustic numbers were great too. I'm looking forward to getting his new album (25th). I only wish he had played longer, it was about 1 hour 20 minutes of super music, The crowd was into it and he should have gone at least 2 hours. The song list was a hit parade and he always does variations on the songs which makes it enjoyable too. I try to see him whenever I can. The people in the seats near me were a hoot, that always adds to it.

    John Mellencamp In Windsor

by Carrie1172 on 7/18/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

I am a HUGE John Mellencamp fan. I drove from Pittsburgh, PA to Windosr, On for the show. As usual John gave his all. My only disppointment was that he didn't play very long. The show was a little under 1 1/2 hours long. Other than that, it was a good show. John interacted with the crowd, signed some autographs during the show and even talked to someone on a fan's cell phone. I am upset i didn't have my camera with me!

    Mellencamp was Great.. too short

by MCM917 on 7/17/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

Loved the concert. John Mellencamp was amazing. Only negative comment I could make is that it was only about an hour long and for the price that was a litle too short for me.

by baq919 on 7/17/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

This was my first John Mellencamp concert, and it was awesome! He played a few new songs which were were outstanding, and he played everyone's favorite old songs including Jack and Diane at the end which everyone sang along to. He had the place rock'en. What a great time!

Have seen John many times before at many different venues. He always puts on a great show and this one was no different. However, I was very disappointed at the amount of time that he was on stage. Didn't feel like I got my moneys worth at all.

John had an incredible opportunity to put on a show for the ages. The venue was intimate and the hard-core fan base brought a strong showing. While the material played was great, his decision to play for less than 1 hr 15 min was short sighted. Imagine what he could have sent his fans home with if he had thrown in some jewels like Taxi Dancer, Jackie Brown, Sugar Marie, A Little Night Dancin' or The Great Midwest? What about playing some of the music that influenced him? And what about a little experimentation with his band, in the spirit of his early club days when I am sure that took place? A few in each of those categories and he could have put on an amazing 2 hour show that would not have left anybody hungry for more. Again, what he played was great, he just needed to play more.

    Johnny was awesome!

by nibam on 7/16/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

As usual, John was awesome. It is to bad the crowd sucked!!! John is such an incredible artist and musician, to bad the crowd didn't appreciate him. The crowd wanted all the usual "pop" songs and if you truly are a fan of John's, you want to hear the "other " songs that make John Mellencamp the artist he is. Love John. Windsor not so much love!

    John is showing his age.

by Anonymous on 7/16/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

John mixed in old and new songs, but collectively sang for only an hour and 15 minutes. Many of his classic songs (I need a lover, Ain't Even Done with the Night, etc.) were absent, perhaps because he admitted he can't hit the high notes anymore. The energy and enthusiam from past shows at DTE Energy Center (4 star concerts) was absent. I was expecting a lot more.

Mellencamp always puts on a good show. Loved the smaller venue this time and his crowd interaction. Especially enjoyed the acoustic versions and the fiddle/accordian duo.

    JOHN MELLANCAMP

    by Peachie22 on 7/16/10Casino Rama - Orillia

My husband and I have seen John Melancamp at least 6 times before this and he was just as great as he was the other six times. He was a little more personal this time becasue of the smaller venue I think but it was definitely worth seeing -- we had a great time

    too short

by rockstar131 on 7/16/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

Mellencamp played for exactly one hour. I paid $70/ticket for only one hour of entertainment. That was a rip off. While he played he was good. Too much new stuff. I like to hear songs that i know.

    ripped off

by longtimeNCfan on 7/16/10The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

sorry to say, but it was JM at his worst. had great seats (row 9) and was really excited to see him again live. for ticket price, though, it was a ripoff. the performance started 20 min late and he played only one set for a total of about 1hr, 15min. seemed apathetic, phoning it in; just kind of lackluster performance overall. also, not sure if it was the band or the venue, but the sound quality was really poor... murky, muddied, not crisp and clear. hate to say it, but maybe it's time for JM to just kick back and tend the farm in IN. finally, the venue needs some serious work with (person) traffic flow getting out of the auditorium. seemed like there were only about three double doors for egress, so we just stood there for about 20 minutes not going anywhere.

    fantastic

    by 4hire on 7/14/10Casino Rama - Orillia

He played all the rngs and we had fun listing. Jon was his real self as always. Good to the crowd and gave them what they wanted. Was it long enough? Never would it be. We could have stayed another hour for sure and I'm positive he would have done so if allowed. It was just a good night with good friends, good food, and good music. Good job John and the band.
