John Mellencamp in Concert

John Mellencamp has been bringing his brand of American heartland rock to fans since the late '70s, when his raw, rootsy sound set him apart from the arena rockers in vogue at the time. The Midwestern twang that adds to his signature vocal style also informs his songs, as he details the ups and downs of the everyday working folks he grew up among. The rough-and-ready roots-rock sound he perfected on milestone '80s albums like ‘American Fool’ and ‘Scarecrow’ has remained a crucial touchstone for Mellencamp's concerts, regardless of where he falls in the roots–rock spectrum at any given phase. And when he delivers classics like "Jack & Diane," "Pink Houses," "Small Town," or "Hurts So Good," he digs deep for a gritty, from-the-gut delivery that connects with his audiences in an immediate, visceral way. From his 2017 Sad Clowns and Hillbillies tour with guests Emmylou Harris and Carlene Carter to his 2018 Other People's Stuff tour, Mellencamp's latter-day outings have shown that the veteran road dog only gets tougher and more determined.

John Mellencamp Background

John Mellencamp was born in Indiana in 1951, and worked with a series of bands throughout his teens, but in the mid '70s he managed to hook up with David Bowie manager Tony DeFries, which led to his first record deal, under the name Johnny Cougar. He scored his first hit, the rocking "I Need a Lover," in 1979, but it was his 1982 album ‘American Fool’ that really broke him through to the big time. The massive hits "Jack & Diane" and "Hurts So Good" made him a bona fide rock star. On subsequent '80s albums like ‘Uh-huh’ and ‘Scarecrow,’ Mellencamp (finally working under his own surname) developed the sharp, sociopolitical side of his lyrical sensibilities. On songs like "Pink Houses," "Small Town," and "Scarecrow," he sang of and for the working people who are the heart and soul of America, and Mellencamp became an American icon in the process. But despite his Grammy award, his mega-Platinum record sales, and his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame membership, Mellencamp has never lost sight of the people who put him where he is, and they're still the focus of his music.

    Bad planning

by Russ2 on 11/7/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

Bad planning to tell ticket holders that they must be there by 6:45 P.M. to watch a movie but then not even open the doors to let people in until 6:45--then make them wait in the lobby for another 30+ minutes before letting them go to their seats. The movie had already started by the time we got in and the noise of people filing in made it impossible to hear it. Mellencamp's show was good but to not give an encore, when the cheering went on for over 5 minutes, was cheap--at least send someone out to tell the audience that there would not be an encore. We have seen some really GREAT shows at the Midland (Leonard Cohen), but this was not one of them.

    Horrible crowd, decent performance

by Siggy99 on 11/7/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

Growing up with John Mellencamp's music, I was very pumped about seeing him in concert. This was also my first time seeing a show at The Midland Theatre. The theatre itself is beautiful and inviting. We had great seats up in the balcony and the documentary being shown of John Mellencamp and his band putting together his latest album was a fun start. The show began with kick and then slowly mellowed out, which I thought was fine. However, everyone else around me thought otherwise and decided it was a good time to talk about their lives and issues while Mellencamp was singing his new songs and some of his less-familiar songs. At times, the people talking were louder than Mellencamp's performance. But, I was at least enjoying the mellow songs and trying not to let the people around me get to me. This lasted about 2/3 of the show. Then Mellencamp came out with his "rock" performance and the crowd went wild. I didn't for a couple of reasons. First, I thought it was quite rude of the crowd to talk and ignore the first 2/3 of his show just because they weren't as familiar with the songs that he was playing and then be all wonderful for the last 1/3 when they got to the songs they knew. Second, when Mellencamp got to the rock performance and he was about to play some of his hits, he decided to add a precursor saying "I'm not much of a nostalgic person, but I know I have to play some of the songs you like". It was like he didn't want to even play these songs, but he had to. This totally ruined it for me because the crowd sucked and now Mellencamp was just going through the motions at this point, like he didn't care. The show ended without an encore which made the crowd absolutely mad, but I have to give Mellencamp credit here. His crowd sucked, so why should he do an encore just to do an encore? I would like to see him again, except with a much better crowd than the one he had during this performance.

    John Mellencamp at the Midland

by Stormdog on 11/7/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

If you are looking for all the old favorites, this is not the concert for that. He did Jack and Diane and Cherry Bomb accapelo. Missed the band for both of those songs. Most of the songs were slow and mellow. It was a two hour concert and the last 20 minutes he had every one rocking but not until then. He opened with The Authority Song and I think everyone thought he would head into some of his most well known songs. He did Little Pink Houses, Scarecrow and a couple of others.

Everything was good until John decided he didn't need to do an encore. Who doesn't do an encore?

    Mellencamp bombs

by WildcatReyes on 11/7/10The Midland by AMC - Kansas City

John Mellencamp sounded great, but I would like my $150 back. He played about three songs that his audience knew. I understand artists will play songs from their newest album, but that's not what made him millions, famous and packed the house. Two women around me were actually sleeping through John's parade of Irish jigs. This is the first time I've sat in a concert and did so out of protest. Do not waste your money on this tour! I've spent 20 years listening to John and you won't even recognize the songs.

mellencamp ryman review from a 13 year olds eyes

    by 65475 on 11/6/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Great concert, couldn't have been better. If you like john mellencamp you have to go see a concert during this tour. I've seen ten concerts including the eagles twice, sheryl crowe 3 times and robert plant and allison krauss, but this is one of the best. Like john said himself, he is in the best band in the world.

    Mellencamp at the Ryman

by Starquest on 11/6/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

The format for this show is a departure from previous tours. John has toyed with a few acoustic songs, but he expanded the acoustic selections and in this venue he found a perfect fit. The acoustics in the Ryman were fabulous. The show had a feeling of an intimate evening with John and the band, but this doesn't mean the show was mellow. The electric full band set kicked off with "Rain on the Scarecrow" and included a blistering "If I Die Sudden" which just has to be experienced live. Recordings don't do it justice. I hope this becomes a staple of live shows from now on. The band was tight as usual and the performance was essentially flawless as all Mellencamp shows are. While the music and lyrics from the past two CD's can be somewhat melancholy and even dark, to me the show is a celebration of life, and if death happens to come knocking - then bring it on because we've all had one hell of a ride.

i was so excited to see John Mellencamp in concert! I understand w/ any new release you want to promote the new material but there's also the expectations of the classics. It had been over an 1 1/2hrs and he hadn't played any of his old music. We left our good seats and went home.

    Wonderful show, terrible seats

by wbeckman on 11/6/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

The show was simply amazing. The seats however were not worth the money I paid. Lower Level, right behind 2 poles. Not the bands fault though. I will be attending the Atlanta show at the Fox Theater

    John has changed

    by kyhillbilly2 on 11/6/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I didn't like the video early I think he played too much of new music and not enough of the old that made him famous. And not coming back for an encore was distasteful

    Great show, but....

    by whitelightning08 on 11/5/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

This was the first time I've seen John Mellencamp live. He put on a great show, but I was expecting something more. He played a good mix of his new material and his hit songs, mixing up the arrangements a bit. Some songs with a full band, and some with just himself and an acoustic guitar. I liked all the songs he played, but the audience seemed more interested in his older material. I was very surprised and a little disappointed that he did not play an encore, despite a roaring crowd. Maybe he had a good reason, but I know some people that traveled and paid good money to see him at the Ryman. He could of at least played one more song.

    Great Show

by SWKa on 11/5/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Mellancamp put on a great show with a mix of his new tunes and old standards. I and the rest of the audience, were disappointed about there was no encore. Maybe he had the day after the "Republican Shellacking" blues...

by BLArntz on 11/5/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

John "Buddy" Mellencamp was awesome! His energy on stage and the direction he has gone with his music is great. I would definitely go see him again but without the movie this time.

    Mellencamp in Nashville @Ryman

by grabitup on 11/5/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Well John did a nice show that was somewhat predictable from the previous reviews I read. His show was at least a couple hours long with a good mix of acoustic and electric tunes. His rendetion of Jack and Dianne was a bit different but I still thought it was pretty cool. His electric violin player was fun to watch even though her tall, skinney physical apprearance made me keep thinking of Gumby. Maybe she had a green skirt on I don't know. Overall, I would recommend the show to anyone. A solid four stars in my book.

    Mellencamp is an awesome artist

by tennfan on 11/5/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Seeing John Mellencamp at the Ryman Auditorium was great. Smaller venue that really allowed you to appreciate his song writing talent and guitar playing. Had a great band and really did mix up the new with his oldies. Violin was also awesome. Usual numbskulls who only want old songs performed in the exact same way as a CD. Why not just stay home and listen to one. John Mellencamp is really an original American artist. Performed for 2 hours and sang and played the entire time. Great rocking music

Mellencamp...Not what he used to be.

by MoveOn on 11/5/10Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Very disappointing show. Slow first half. Too many half baked political and government jabs. HORRIBLE rendition of Jack and Diane. Out of touch with the crowd. Did not engage the audience. No encore!
