John Mellencamp in Concert

John Mellencamp has been bringing his brand of American heartland rock to fans since the late '70s, when his raw, rootsy sound set him apart from the arena rockers in vogue at the time. The Midwestern twang that adds to his signature vocal style also informs his songs, as he details the ups and downs of the everyday working folks he grew up among. The rough-and-ready roots-rock sound he perfected on milestone '80s albums like ‘American Fool’ and ‘Scarecrow’ has remained a crucial touchstone for Mellencamp's concerts, regardless of where he falls in the roots–rock spectrum at any given phase. And when he delivers classics like "Jack & Diane," "Pink Houses," "Small Town," or "Hurts So Good," he digs deep for a gritty, from-the-gut delivery that connects with his audiences in an immediate, visceral way. From his 2017 Sad Clowns and Hillbillies tour with guests Emmylou Harris and Carlene Carter to his 2018 Other People's Stuff tour, Mellencamp's latter-day outings have shown that the veteran road dog only gets tougher and more determined.

John Mellencamp Background

John Mellencamp was born in Indiana in 1951, and worked with a series of bands throughout his teens, but in the mid '70s he managed to hook up with David Bowie manager Tony DeFries, which led to his first record deal, under the name Johnny Cougar. He scored his first hit, the rocking "I Need a Lover," in 1979, but it was his 1982 album ‘American Fool’ that really broke him through to the big time. The massive hits "Jack & Diane" and "Hurts So Good" made him a bona fide rock star. On subsequent '80s albums like ‘Uh-huh’ and ‘Scarecrow,’ Mellencamp (finally working under his own surname) developed the sharp, sociopolitical side of his lyrical sensibilities. On songs like "Pink Houses," "Small Town," and "Scarecrow," he sang of and for the working people who are the heart and soul of America, and Mellencamp became an American icon in the process. But despite his Grammy award, his mega-Platinum record sales, and his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame membership, Mellencamp has never lost sight of the people who put him where he is, and they're still the focus of his music.

Great mix of his classics and fantastic new songs!

by smalltowncouple on 11/13/10Hinkle Fieldhouse - Indianapolis

Much better sound than I feared at Hinkle, John did a great job of show casing his new songs and adding very interesting twist to some of his old songs (Jack & Diane). Good end with some of his classic (and some newer) songs with hard driving rock and roll (actually finally shut up some of his "fans" living in the past). If you want to hear music like your CD's of the 80's you might be disappointed but if you like his continuing musical changes and the statements of his lyrics you will love it.

    Awesome Concert

by CountryKells on 11/12/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

WE thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Great mix of old and newer songs. We loved all of it. John is very personable and he talked to the audience, told stories, and enjoyed being on stage. He engaged well with the audience and the music was superb. He has great musicians in the band. The film prior to the live show was a wonderful piece and I highly recomend that you see the film. It makes the concert even more meaningful. We have been to a lot of concerts this year and this one was in the TOP 3. We just can't pick between those three. Sit back, jump up and bounce your head to the beat - Enjoy!

    Best Ever

by Matchmaker on 11/12/10Hinkle Field House - Indianapolis

We attended the concert last night at Hinkle Field House in Indianapolis,Indiana and it was great. John's performance was better than we thought it would be. He played several of his new songs and many of the oldies. He even brought someone out of the crowd on stage to dance with him. He told a few jokes and really got the crowd going. I would recommend this concert to everyone. If you want to see John at his best you must attend. He makes you feel like you are 16 again. John totally outdid himself.

Mellencamp is not what he used to be...

by Formerfan61 on 11/11/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Deadly boring film first. Lots of "folkabilly" played at earsplitting volume with litlle enthusiasm. Old favorites unrecognizable. Last 20 minutes were ok. Won't go again

    The Mellencamp Team were amazing!

by Compassion on 11/11/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

John truly is a great conductor. It is always wonderfult to hear and watch those talented musicians perform together, under John's direction. It's an added benefit for me personally to hear John speak out and write about social issues that reflect my views also. I thank him for using his talent to bring these issues to his music.

    No Better Than This

by Mellenhead2 on 11/10/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

The stage design set the scene for Mellencamp's show very well. The overhead blue and yellow twinkling lights reminded me of the peaceful and innocent times of the days of yesteryear-- this worked great to set the mood for the show and the groups of songs that were played. For 90 minutes, it was a reflective celebration of a variety of subject matters. The folk, blues, and early rock vintage sound, as heard on his current album, had a somber and somewhat of a haunting tune, whether Mellencamp played his current material or some of his earlier material. The last 30 minutes of the concert was his signature "rocking the house" and everyone was on their feet, clapping and singing along to his timeless songs, as Mellencamp referred to as "our old friends." He and the band constantly played energetically before bowing out. Another show well done!

    Mellencamp is a class act

by RockerSteph on 11/10/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

John Mellencamp's show was amazing. I have seen him before but seeing him in a smaller venue and with his band stripped down for most of the show and some songs with just him and his guitar was amazing. If you have the chance, see him!

    Non-Stop Mellencamp

by DJHarv on 11/10/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Was awesome. 2 Hours and 10 minutes of non-stop Mellencamp. A great mixture of his old standards plus several of his newer songs. What a great story teller. Still has his unique voice - maybe the cigarettes keep it sounding good as ever, not sure. Also enjoyed the film prior to the concert - provided a good intro to his new songs for the live concert.

1st time to see Mellencamp. Really, really enjoyed his new stuff. Hard to classify, but kind of a cross between Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton. His band was very tight !!!! Thought the new music was best part of show and it all was excellent.

    best yet

by pernelkus on 11/10/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Each time we attend a JM show, we walk away anxious for the next tour so we can go again. His creative arrangements of his "old friends" make it so they never sound out-of-date. His new work is fresh and exciting. He doesn't seem to reuse riffs from 70s, '80s, and 90s as some other veteran groups like to do. Yet it is definately Mellencamp. No one else writes like that. Thanks John, for another great show. P.S. Great movie

    John Mellencamp

by KatieHFan on 11/10/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

John & the band rocked! It was a great show and the accoustics were fantastic at Clowes Hall. It rivaled the first couple of times I saw John in the late 70's with the bands' energy, selection, and level of entertainment~one of the best shows I've seen John do~and I've seen a lot of them over the years.

I have been a fan since 'American Fool' back in 1982. Since I live in Norway and John don't tour overseas this was my first concert with the man. I was a great show, venue, crowd and trips for me.

This was my first John Mellencamp concert and I loved it!! I have always enjoyed his music and share an interest in many of the "causes" he believes in. It was a very special evening for me, my husband, daughter and friends. I also like his paintings very much. I very much enjoyed the newer direction of John's music and hearing the changes in his music through the years. I have a whole new appreciation for his work. I do have to say that the drum volume was too loud for me after the drum set was moved to the center stage. I could not hear John Mellencamp sing and felt pinned into my seat by the vibration. It was not a pleasant feeling!!

    Awesome Show!

by JMoab on 11/10/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

While Mellencamp's commercial relevance has long passed by, his relevance as an artist is clearly at an all-time high. Clearly not content to just bang out a trunk load of his Arena Rock hits, he has dug deep into the core of Americana and raised the bar for what music in that and similar genres should sound like. People expecting a rote run through of his hits will be disappointed. Those who enjoy hearing new versions of old songs and who can appreciate an artist not resting on his laurels and reaching for new levels artistic integrity will be wowed. As always, the band crackled with energy and John's newly honed gruff voice perfectly matched the tone of the show. Having been to hundreds of concerts and probably a dozen of his, I have seen very few with the energy and drama of this show. Mellencamp is totally at the top of his game. Like all great shows, he left you wanting more. Rock and roll bliss.

I thought John Mellencamp put on a wonderful show, he joked with the crowd mixed up the songlist between new and old music and left you wanting more.

    Mr. Mellencamp - Priceless

by TPring on 11/10/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

John Mellencamp played Clowes Hall on this past Monday evening and the show was outstanding! The 'Best band in the world' flawlessly backed vocals that ranged from hard edged and gritty to smooth and flowing. John has continued to grow and evolve the music that we all remember and surprise us with wonderfully listenable new offerings. I found the insertion of a wonderful Irish-esque musical interlude evocative and sweet. The accordian and the violin meshed beautifully to create a tune that made one wish to dance and dance. Wonderful percussion with no losses in tempo kept each song moving and the audience dancing in front of their seats. Beautiful guitar, mandolin and a rocking upright Bass added to the beauty and evolution of the Mellencamp sound. These songs I knew so well came back to me in a new form with new interpretations and tempos. They maintained the same power of evoked in the words of the songwriter and forced me to re-think each song and its meaning. I know now they are just as relevant today as they were when I first heard them. Can a man and a band keep it really Real? You bet...and more. This has to be one of my favorite shows in the new Mellinium. I love the acoustics in Clowes Memorial Hall. It is a great venue to listen to all manner of music and I cannot think of a better small venue for such fantastic music to be performed in. Given the opportunity to see this man and his band again, you bet, sign me up, I'm there. Now you be there too!

The music was great. The atmosphere was unbelievable. I went expecting to have to listen to his newer music so I could here the old stuff. The new music live was as good or better than his older music. Puts on a great show. The violin in his music was outstanding! One of the top 2 or 3 concerts I have been too.
