About

Joe Jackson was born on August 11 1954 in Burton-on-Trent, England, but grew up in the South Coast naval port city of Portsmouth.

In 1978 Joe was living in London and hawking an album-length demo, with his own band (Graham Maby, Bass; Dave Houghton, Drums; Gary Sanford, Guitar) standing by. That demo - already called Look Sharp - eventually found its way to American producer David Kershenbaum, who was in London in the capacity of talent scout for A&M Records. Joe was immediately signed and Look Sharp more professionally re-recorded in August '78. The Joe Jackson Band finally started to play regular gigs and the album was released in January 1979.

Look Sharp was followed within a year by the very similar I'm The Man, and in 1980 by the darker, more reggae-influenced Beat Crazy. At the end of 1980, drummer Houghton decided to quit, and Joe decided to dissolve the band and try something new.

In 1981 Jackson recorded Jumpin' Jive, a 'musical vacation' paying tribute to Swing and Jump Blues artists such as Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. Returning to songwriting, Joe spent a large chunk of 1982 in New York. The result was Night and Day, a more sophisticated and melodic record built around keyboards and Latin percussion, rather than guitars.

Now based in NYC, Jackson's next album Body and Soul(1984) was in a similar vein to Night and Day but featured a horn section (which, along with the Blue Note-inspired cover art, led many people to wrongly assume he'd made a jazz record). For Big World (1986) Jackson stripped everything down to a 4-piece again, and recorded live, direct to 2-track master. In 1989 he went in the opposite direction with the majestic, semi-autobiographical Blaze of Glory, and toured with an 11-piece band. Laughter and Lust (1991) was more like a mainstream (though still idiosyncratic) rock record.

Joe's work during the rest of the 1990s was his most challenging and eclectic: the gentle, soul-searching Night Music (1994), the ambitious and original song-cycle based on the Seven Deadly Sins, Heaven and Hell (1997), and the album Joe considers his best (and most underrated): Night and Day II (2000). The turn of the century saw a burst of creativity: Jackson won his first Grammy (Best Pop Instrumental Album for the non-traditional, non-orchestral Symphony No.1) and published his book A Cure For Gravity.

In 2003 Jackson astonished everyone, including himself, by re-forming the original Joe Jackson Band for a stunning new album, Volume 4, and a lengthy tour. The reunion was always intended as a one-off, but it also produced a live album, Afterlife, in 2004.

In 2006 Joe turned his attention back to pure songwriting and did a short Trio tour with Graham Maby and Dave Houghton. Joe moved to Berlin, where his next album Rain was recorded in 2007. Consisting of ten powerful, timeless new songs, Rain creates a surprisingly epic sound with just voices, piano, bass and drums. A live album, Live Music, was released in 2011.

In 2012 Joe released a tribute to one of his greatest musical heroes, Duke Ellington. The Duke is an often radical re-interpretation of fifteen Ellington classics.

In 2015, Jackson announced the completion of his follow-up to The Duke via his official website. The album's title, Fast Forward, and track list were confirmed in addition to North American tour dates.

On 18 January 2019, Jackson released the album Fool.

After a Covid induced layofff Joe toured the US and Europe in 2022 behind a tour named "Sing, You Sinners!" featuring songs from his catalog plus a few select covers. The tour featured his band Graham Maby on Bass, Teddy Kumpel on Guitar and Doug Yowell on Drums.

Nov 24th 2023 saw the release of "Mr Joe Jackson Presents "What A Racket": The Music Of Max Champion", a collection of songs written by the long forgotten Music Hall performer Max Champion.

April 2026 will see the release of a new album "Hope and Fury" together with extensive touring in both North America and Europe.

Jackson splits his time between New York, Portsmouth UK and Berlin.

  • Joe Jackson at the Orpheum - Phenomenal

by DoctorDavid on 10/8/12Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This is the third time I've seen Joe Jackson. This was simply the best concert I have ever attended. The musicianship was top-notch all the way around. Joe obviously gave it his all - he seemed wiped out by the end of the show. He was in a really playful mood, which is unusual for him. His voice was in great shape. His arrangements of his back catalog were inspiring. Imagine "Is She Really Going Out With Him" with accordion, tuba and banjo! My only complaint is that Joe tours LA too rarely - the last concert was 4 years ago.

  • Joe Jackson was absolute perfection!

by Barbmama on 10/7/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing show! The interplay between the band members, the set list, the flow of the music, all outstanding. I also love "an evening with" shows, thanks for not having an opening band!

  • The best concert of the year

by PickyPaula on 10/7/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

I hadn't seen Joe Jackson in years, so it was a delight to see him in the wonderful Montalvo venue. We were just 7 rows up from the stage, so we could see everything. He played a great mixture of old and new songs. We were impressed enough with the set that I ordered the lastest CD, Duke, the next morning. He brought his big band, and every performer was excellent. Don't miss your chance to see him.

  • Consummate Musician Comes Through!

by lberger on 10/7/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen JJ many times and am never disappointed. He knows how to pick his music and musicians. His side players were AMAZING. The best part was that he enjoyed their playing as much as we did, like he couldn't have been prouder to see them shine. On a chilly night, he warmed us up. Loved it!.

  • Joe Jackson & band were terrific

    by ruth3d on 10/7/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 4 out of 5

The show started almost 40 min late and was short - 1 hr 30 min or so including intermission. I was annoyed about the late start and it took be a few songs to settle down and enjoy. I loved the combination of instruments - especially the addition of the violin. Great intermingling of old songs with songs from "Duke" - Joe's new album focused on Duke Ellington music. The musicians were great and flexible - multiple instruments, singing, . . .

  • A masterful tribute to The Duke

by Synguru on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

What a great evening! The venue is lovely, and totally supports the arts, so it's worthwhile to see shows there. The sound was fabulous, as were Joe and his band! A great set of hits, unexpected gems, and of course Joe's brilliant reworkings from the Duke Ellington catalog.

  • Joe rocked!

by VRagic on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I purchased some wine and went to our seats to enjoy the show. Joe came out on stage alone at about 7:30, and looks older than his 58 years. His voice is spectacular. He sat at a small keyboard and opened with It Don't Mean a Thing (if it ain't got that swing) and one by one, other members of his band joined him on stage for almost 2 hours of AMAZING energy! He was friendly and engaging to the audience... we loved this show. Nothing from Jumpin Jive (my favorite album), but plenty of Latin tinged Jazz, and some great medleys of Duke Ellington's work. Caravan, My House and Sunday Papers were stand outs. If you like jazz and get a chance to see him, grab it.

  • Joe Jackson at Montalvo in Saratoga

by concertenjoyer on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic night! Joe and his band delivered an enjoyable evening (the beautiful weather didn't hurt) to all of us at Montalvo. Great instrumentation, wonderful renditions of the Duke, and some happy trips back to the '80s. Would go again and again to see how well these musicians play together.

  • One of the best concerts I've ever seen!

by BMWIsetta on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

This is the third time I've seen Joe Jackson, and without a doubt the best show ever! I've been to 7 or 8 dozen concerts, and this was one of the best. A combination of old and new material, Joe and band out did themselves. The band was great, and it was nice to hear some of the old music played with a larger band. The last JJ concert I attended was for Rain, and he had a trio. This time around was much fuller, and hearing Invisible Man was outstanding!. Villa Montalvo was a perfect venue. Not too large. The sound system was awesome! Parking was quick and efficient via shuttle buses from West Valley College. Joe played for 1hr and 50 mins. It took 25 mins to get back to the car. I'm not usually this positive about anything! It really was that good.

  • Joe Jackson is an unbelievable talent

by Moulard on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

I had no idea how entertaining this show would be. First of all, the venue is gorgeous and was perfect for this type of show. There was a great mix between new and old. The musicians are insanely talented and I loved the new take on older songs. The songs from The Duke are so creative and beautiful. Joe was entertaining and funny. The entire event was a delight especially for someone who was only going to accompany a long time fan.

  • A lovely, civilized evening!

by CrystalVision on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Joe opened with (solo piano) "would you be my number Two" before his 6-piece band came out . I was expecting to hear a good deal of his new album, but he surprised us with so much great older material - Steppin' Out, Breaking us in Two, Hometown, It's different for Girls, Is She Really Going out with Him, et cetera. Joe was polite, funny and engaged well with the audience. His voice is really the same and strong as it was 30 years ago. He performed Perdido, Mood Indigo and Satin Doll from his new album. What an incredible, varied body of work! The band smoked; each player was such an adept musician. The show was concluded with Slow Song, the band members made their exits individually, leaving the audience with a solo Joe again. They played for 1-1/2 hours. It was one of those concerts you wished would last 3 hours!

  • Joe Jackson

by Addiemae on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

We try and see Joe Jackson everytime he comes to the Bay Area, and I must say that this time he was at his best. The band he played with was just amazing, not to mention Joe himself, man can he sing. He is the greatest.

  • by Anonymous on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Joe was at his best. The band was superb. His Duke Ellington interpretations were innovative and interesting and very cool. He totally nailed his "classic" stuff! Awesome show! And, Montalvo is a wonderful venue at which to see a concert like this...very sophisticated crowd!

  • Joe Jackson at Villa Montalvo and Nob Hill Masonic

by nicolae on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Such a great show! Joe and the band so skilled and tight! He is a great arranger. His voice still sounds like the old Joe, once he's warmed up. The crowd got off on the oldies but the new Duke Ellington covers brought raucous applause. Excellent all around!

  • Joe Jackson & The Bigger Ban was fabulous!

    by dil3756 on 10/6/12Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Jackson and the other musicians were fabulous. The Michigan Theater was a good venue. Biggest annoyance we experienced were people who insisted on using their cell phone for texting or photos.

  • by Anonymous on 10/6/12Montalvo - SaratogaRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome show - amazing venue - well-run logistics (shuttle buss)

  • Jammin' Joe Jackson

by CheyenneBoedy on 10/2/12Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Great atmosphere and terrific show. By the end of the night people were in dancing in the aisles and in their seats. It was an instrumental infusion and just the fix for any and all who needed an escape from a long week. Bass player, Jesse Murphy, and Regina Carter were out of this world!

  • Amazing Joe Jackson

No one can compare to Joe Jackson after all these years. I could listen to him for hours and hours!

  • Joe kills A Squared

    by wheatgerm2 on 10/1/12Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 4 out of 5

Great sound, great songlist. Vocalist in Farsi and Portuguese also rocked. If Iggy came out, all hell would have broken loose. Dug the entier percussion setup. Even the accordian was cool. Joe still has it.
