About

Joe Jackson was born on August 11 1954 in Burton-on-Trent, England, but grew up in the South Coast naval port city of Portsmouth.

In 1978 Joe was living in London and hawking an album-length demo, with his own band (Graham Maby, Bass; Dave Houghton, Drums; Gary Sanford, Guitar) standing by. That demo - already called Look Sharp - eventually found its way to American producer David Kershenbaum, who was in London in the capacity of talent scout for A&M Records. Joe was immediately signed and Look Sharp more professionally re-recorded in August '78. The Joe Jackson Band finally started to play regular gigs and the album was released in January 1979.

Look Sharp was followed within a year by the very similar I'm The Man, and in 1980 by the darker, more reggae-influenced Beat Crazy. At the end of 1980, drummer Houghton decided to quit, and Joe decided to dissolve the band and try something new.

In 1981 Jackson recorded Jumpin' Jive, a 'musical vacation' paying tribute to Swing and Jump Blues artists such as Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. Returning to songwriting, Joe spent a large chunk of 1982 in New York. The result was Night and Day, a more sophisticated and melodic record built around keyboards and Latin percussion, rather than guitars.

Now based in NYC, Jackson's next album Body and Soul(1984) was in a similar vein to Night and Day but featured a horn section (which, along with the Blue Note-inspired cover art, led many people to wrongly assume he'd made a jazz record). For Big World (1986) Jackson stripped everything down to a 4-piece again, and recorded live, direct to 2-track master. In 1989 he went in the opposite direction with the majestic, semi-autobiographical Blaze of Glory, and toured with an 11-piece band. Laughter and Lust (1991) was more like a mainstream (though still idiosyncratic) rock record.

Joe's work during the rest of the 1990s was his most challenging and eclectic: the gentle, soul-searching Night Music (1994), the ambitious and original song-cycle based on the Seven Deadly Sins, Heaven and Hell (1997), and the album Joe considers his best (and most underrated): Night and Day II (2000). The turn of the century saw a burst of creativity: Jackson won his first Grammy (Best Pop Instrumental Album for the non-traditional, non-orchestral Symphony No.1) and published his book A Cure For Gravity.

In 2003 Jackson astonished everyone, including himself, by re-forming the original Joe Jackson Band for a stunning new album, Volume 4, and a lengthy tour. The reunion was always intended as a one-off, but it also produced a live album, Afterlife, in 2004.

In 2006 Joe turned his attention back to pure songwriting and did a short Trio tour with Graham Maby and Dave Houghton. Joe moved to Berlin, where his next album Rain was recorded in 2007. Consisting of ten powerful, timeless new songs, Rain creates a surprisingly epic sound with just voices, piano, bass and drums. A live album, Live Music, was released in 2011.

In 2012 Joe released a tribute to one of his greatest musical heroes, Duke Ellington. The Duke is an often radical re-interpretation of fifteen Ellington classics.

In 2015, Jackson announced the completion of his follow-up to The Duke via his official website. The album's title, Fast Forward, and track list were confirmed in addition to North American tour dates.

On 18 January 2019, Jackson released the album Fool.

After a Covid induced layofff Joe toured the US and Europe in 2022 behind a tour named "Sing, You Sinners!" featuring songs from his catalog plus a few select covers. The tour featured his band Graham Maby on Bass, Teddy Kumpel on Guitar and Doug Yowell on Drums.

Nov 24th 2023 saw the release of "Mr Joe Jackson Presents "What A Racket": The Music Of Max Champion", a collection of songs written by the long forgotten Music Hall performer Max Champion.

April 2026 will see the release of a new album "Hope and Fury" together with extensive touring in both North America and Europe.

Jackson splits his time between New York, Portsmouth UK and Berlin.

  • LOUD - But fantastic!

by MagusPerde on 10/12/15Cullen Performance Hall at the University of Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Joe Jackson put on an excellent show tonight in Houston. He started very personably with 4 solo songs then played an evening with his band. Three covers ("Girl," the Beatles; Bowie's "Scary Monsters and Super Creeps;" and a nice surprise: Televisions' "See No Evil." The rest of the setlist included songs from his new LP "Fast Forward" (which were nice - this is a brilliant album) and music from throughout his career, including 3 tunes from the 'Look Sharp' album. Even though it was a bit too loud for my taste (I wouldn't have complained about these strong decibels when I saw him in '79, but his music has evolved so much since then, too. Doesn't need to be so loud) - it wasn't distorted. Great show - standing ovations, we didn't want it to end. I hope he doesn't wait so long to come back to Houston again!

  • Joe Jackson the man

by fanmanwoman on 10/9/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This has to be one of the best concerts I have seen the venue was so small it made the show very personal Joe came out just him and his piano. After a couple of songs the band came out to join him, he played some new songs and some of his great classics Joe and the band were very tight. The last song was A Slow Song which starts out jamin then towards the end the band members walked off one by one and it was just Joe and his piano ending the show they way he started it! WOW this guy is great!!!!!

  • Joe Jackson in top form

by SarahFe on 10/8/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Sunday's show was so great.. i almost can't believe just how good it was. He played all the old songs that I wanted to hear, and several of the new songs which are all terrific. A very spare arrangement... started with Joe alone on the piano, and gradually added bass (Graham Maby) as well as drums and guitar. The pure essence of Joe Jackson! As much as he played old favorites, this really wasn't a sing-along.. in fact, when people tried to sing along, it seemed like the deliberately changed things up to mess with the audience. That's cool... we came to hear Joe, and he sounded really good, despite the years of smoking. The social commentary of the lyrics are just as biting and pointed as ever, perhaps even more urgent in some cases. This is a LOUD show... sometimes the music is really in your face... but it's a good kind of loud, perfectly mixed, from the most intimate moments to the raucous rock anthem.

  • Joe Jackson Bringing it!!

by MsBindy on 10/8/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Saw JJ at the Palace in LA on Monday night - what a fantastic show. Enough of the hits, he showcased his Fast Forward album songs, did some great covers. Best cover was EVIL by Tom Verlaine and Television - Joe said hearing that song made him know he wanted to go to New York - totally get it. Will always be a fan Mr Jackson - thanks for taking me back!

  • Joe does not disappoint!!

  • start slow, end fast!

by Jackprantner on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great show. crowd was VERY much into it. Joe opened with a tender solo rendition of Its Different for Girls followed by Be My Number Two. the rest of the band then joined him on stage (first was Graham Maby, his long time bassist) for Is She Really Going Out With Him. the rest of the set was a great mixture of new songs from his 4 City collaboration of Fast Forward, combined with new takes on old classics. Highlight of the evening was a rousing rendition of Tell it to Me One More Time. He could have, and should have, kept playing all night long...

  • Joe Jackson - just as great as when he started out

by LottieDah on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I just love seeing and hearing Joe Jackson live, always have. Very intimate, soul-baring songs yet he can still play with the raucous energy from when he started out as one of the Angry Young Men (along with E. Costello and G. Parker). You feel as if you are sitting next to him and seeing and feeling the same things along with him. Always great audience rapport, Palace Theatre was full of his adoring fans. I always go see him when he's in LA and you should too!

  • Joe Jackson Astonishing at The Palace

    by 2EnjoyingMusic on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Joe Jackson’s performance on opening night in the heart of downtown Los Angeles was astonishing as he opened and closed with the music of his early career. He opened with “Different for Girls” and ended with “Slow Song” then unexpectedly encored the audience with “One More Time.” Along with intertwining his newest more relaxed music from his Fast Forward album release throughout the concert. Joe’s singing voice still sounds like it did back in the 1980s – wonderful! His jazzy piano playing was masterful and his witty humor refreshing, yet his expressions of a warm grateful performer were detected as he said good bye to the sold out audience.

Show began 8:20... people lined on the street for over an hour what a waste of time!! very frustrating when it is unclear!! Downtown LA with its beautiful new theaters and still shoddy neighborhoods not fun to kill time here! T Ickes should have been more clear. people waiting in line were very unhappy!!

  • What a treat!

by LSDEMJ on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great venue for an intimate experience with no bad seat. Joe was still great and it was fun to hear both old and new songs. New Orleans style Joni Mitchel cover great too! Weird being in the bottom half of the audience age...and i am 51!

  • Jack is back!

by MUTANTPRESS on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

There is no songwriter-singer- performer-piano player alive today with as much versatility and energy as Joe Jackson. His new CD Fast Forward is a testament to his musical prowess as well as his creative eclecticism. His performance at The Palace was brilliant, and his band provided the raw power needed to propel his new songs as well as classics from his catalog into new realms of expression and power. The sound at the Palace was outstanding, if the seat were not. Old theaters like this were designed back in the 1930's when the average height was six inches less than today. But we survived the cramped seating, and even in the upper balcony, our view of the stage was perfect. I love the new record- Joe played seven tracks from it, mixed with oldies like Another World, Different for Girls, Obvious Song, Stepping Out, and Home Town to name a few. See this tour.

  • Joe Jackson still has it

by Sleelio on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I hadn't seen Joe Jackson since the 80's during his "Jumpin' Jive" tour. While he no longer has the tremendous energy he had in those days, his voice is still strong and in tune, and of course, now he has even more excellent material to choose from. He cleverly sandwiched in songs from his new album (which were great) between old and "really old" (his description) songs. I wish the sound quality had been better - at first his voice was too loudly mixed and abrasive sounding, but then after that everything just sounded a bit muddy. With only 4 instruments, this was disappointing. It's early in the tour though, so maybe the sound mixing will get sorted out. I loved the show, and I love Joe Jackson!

  • Joe sings Joni Mitchell cover!!!

by Walnuty on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

It was more than I could imagine. My first time seeing Joe Jackson after listening to all his music through the years. I am going to see him next chance I get. Wonderful show and his band is fantastic. He also told some funny stories along with the amazing songs. What a night to spend with Joe. Thank you

  • Joe Jackson: better than ever!

by JylR on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

A great mix of new work with older tunes, with really old tunes (as he put it). Band was phenomenal, as was, of course, Joe. I've seen him several times over the decades, and this was my favorite of his concerts.

  • Vintage JOE!

    by paulnwil2 on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great new music, energetic old songs all mixed into a terrific 2-hr show! Joe Jackson has outdone himself again, thank you JOE! Palace Theater DTLA is developing into an intimate concert venue, very good acoustics and no seat more than 80 feet to stage, renovation continuing.

  • Not to be missed!!! Exceeded expectations!

by charlasu on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Exceeded our expectations as Joe Jackson is such a solid songwriter with great audience interaction, giving insights into the creative process of what he was thinking when he wrote the songs. Solid musicianship. Amazing!

  • Joe Jackson in L.A.

    by Steve111333 on 10/7/15Palace Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, voice right on, full of classic energy. Fortunate to see him doing all the songs from the 70's up.

  • Joe Jackson - Wilbur Theater Boston - 9/19/2012

by JimmyCapeCod on 10/15/12Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I purchased these tickets without knowing about Joe's new CD which is a tribute to Duke Ellington. In fact the tour is billed as a Duke tribute and that may have made me hesitate had I known that. Glad I didn't - Joe was magnificent as usual, I enjoyed the "Joe Jackson" treatment give to Ellington's music and the "bigger band" was simply amazing. This is the 5th or 6th time I've seen Joe and every time was a showcase of his talent as a singer/songwriter, musician, arranger, and top notch at hiring an amazing group of musicians (7 pieces this time) for the particular tour. He wove in many favorites from his entire catalog.
