JOAN ARMATRADING ON TOUR:

More than four decades after her debut, British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading remains one of the country's most beloved and respected musical figures. Armatrading's honey-toned voice and raw, emotional lyrics earned her a string of hits in the '70s and '80s, and she's only improved over the years, delivering ever more moving and passionate performances on each successive tour. She's a veritable legend on the guitar, and whether she's picking out tunes on a six-string or a twelve-string, she never fails to impress with her nimble fingers and soulful playing. On the road in 2015 for the tour A Very Special Solo Evening with Joan Armatrading, the beloved singer offers fans a rare treat -- intimate, career-spanning solo performances featuring stripped-down renditions of classics like "Love and Affection" and "The Weakness in Me".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Caribbean-born Joan Armatrading spent her early childhood on Saint Kitts and Antigua before moving to Birmingham, England with her family at age seven. She picked up the guitar and piano in her early teens, and at age 16 she made her performance debut at Birmingham University with a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence". She released her first album Whatever’s for Us in 1972 and the follow-up Back to the Night in 1975, but she truly made a mark in 1976 when she cracked the Top 20 on the UK Albums Charts with her self-titled third album. The record's lead single "Love and Affection" was a Top 10 hit in the UK and also earned her a growing fanbase in the US, where she performed the song on Saturday Night Live in 1977. She cemented her status as the first black British female musician to achieve international success with her 1980 album Me Myself I, a new wave-influenced album that introduced a harder, rock edge to her sound and marked the pinnacle of her chart success. Armatrading has remained prolific ever since, releasing popular albums throughout the '90s and '00s. Following the 2012 release of her album Starlight, Armatrading hinted at retirement, meaning that the performances on her 2015 solo tour may be among her last.

    Joan Armatrading was disappointing!

by JET003 on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

This was the 10th time I have seen Joan. I am a die hard fan for her music, I've been following her for over 20 years. This was an outdoor event. The temperature that evening was 87 degrees. She stated how hot it was, which was obvious to all attending. She started the concert with a track off her new CD. I feel she played too many songs from her new CD. Most of her fans are the same ones who have been following her for years, very few new younger fans. We love all her older albums and songs, she played some of those, but she lacked energy and excitement the entire night. She mentioned again about the heat and implied she couldn't wait to finish the concert. She started at 9:00PM and played to 10:30PM with her famous encore "Willow" and one more song. Finished at 10:45PM. I feel cheated, no one even got up to dance until the last 2 songs. She played " All the Way to America" without her 12 string guitar, that's what really makes the song. I have tickets to see her again at the Sellersville Theatre, PA on July 19th. This event is indoors, I hope to see Joan at her best.

    Joan Armatrading was amazing!

by MaggiMay on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

I saw Joanie at Longwood Gardens in 90 degrees and she is one of the few artists I would do that for. I have seen her many times since the late 70s and she never ceases to amaze me. Her range and versatility are what make listening to her NEVER BORING.

Joan is an amazing musician. Her band rocked! The only thing I would suggest is that she have some back up singers. (women) besides her band. Wow was the weather hot.

Armatrading rocked, sound system not so much

by Otterly on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

This was my first time seeing Joan Armatrading live and also my first time at Longwood Gardens as a concert venue. I really enjoyed both Shawn Colvin and Joan Armatrading, although it was a strange pairing. Joan did a nice mix of old and new material, and she has tremendous presence, kick ass guitar work, and that wonderful unique voice. Which is where the problem was... the sound system (or it's technician) did not do a good job of bring out her voice in the mix. When the full band was playing, she was overpowered and her vocals were lost. All I could hear was the bass. At least where I was sitting. This was a tremendous disappointment, especially for a concert that was expensive. As I was walking out (while they were playing the last number) I noticed that the sound balance was better OUTSIDE of the concert seating area. Anyway, a caveat to those planning to go to a concert at Longwood.

    Joan was great

by Kiki229 on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

No complaints about the concert itself--wonderful. The gardens are a great venue for a summer concert. The rows of seats on the top tier were very close together, making it hard for people to get in and out. Since it was outdoors and a more relaxed setting, people were a bit less considerate--running in and out of seats numerous times, ushers seating during a song rather than waiting until it was finished, and loud talking by a man in the back row. Wondered why he spent $50 to see a concert, only to talk continuously thru it. Was hard to see from row GG--there's not much elevation up there to see over the row in front of you.

Voice amplification for Joan needed tobe turned up. She is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter and guitarist. Gave a truly satisfying concert. Longwood Gardens was a magical setting with seating for just the right number of guests. Yea, Joan. Glad she's still on the road.

Joan is a really talented guitarist and singer. What a voice and energy despite high 90 degree temperature at outdoor venue. A great entertainer getting better all the time.

Joan is every bit as cool as she was 30 years ago.

by growapples on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

I have seen Joan Armatrading many times over the years. I really enjoy her music and her spirit. She is who she is - and she rocks out completely. A friend who came with me expected a folky show and while she writes amazingly meaningful and true lyrics to her songs, that woman ROCKS. The single most poignant aspect of this show for me was the incredible clarity and range in her voice. She sounds EXACTLY as she did as a young woman. You would almost expect some of this to fall off over the years but not with Joan. Also, this woman plays a guitar like nobody's business. It was a great show. New songs comingled with the classics. Even as hot as it was in Philadelphia that night, Joan did not disappoint. The venue - Longwood Gardens - is a great place to see a show. Outdoor, intimate, easy to park, amazingly beautiful gardens. It can be buggy so bring the spray.

    Best Concert of the Season!

by Therivermuse on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

I have been a fan of Joan Armatrading from the first song I heard played on the radio station in 1972. I immediately went out and purchased the album. I have purchased every one since then, and always recommend her music to folks who might be interested in discovering the rare treasure trove of musical talents she shares with listeners. Last night's concert at Longwood Gardens, (the second venue on her new tour) proved once again, that Ms. Armatrading is spot on as an artist and performer. The set she played was as diverse as her obviously admiring fans came to hear. The non stop applause heard as she played updated arrangements of some of her earliest work was met with the cheers from her oldest fans as well as the obvious new generational fans. Her band was the perfect compliment to her performance with backup on keyboards, strings and drums. "Tight" only begins to express the talents of her band. One would expect no less of Joan. Ms. Armatrading played many tracks from her latest album, and treated all who had not ever seen her in concert to her audience participation piece, Best Dress On for which she suggested some serious hand clapping and shouting out the lyrics when cued to join in. I didn't see anyone in the audience not swept up by this joyous upbeat song. Had it not been a record breaking day regarding the temperature, she would have heated up the venue with love exchanged from artist to audience and back again. Ms. Armatrading, breaks records as a complex performer and one possessing musical talents far beyond the reach of many of her peers. Her contributions as an artist, a humanitarian with the addition of her unique vocals, vision and musical legend only added to the pleasure of seeing her vibrant performance in a concert under the stars.. Undaunted by the heat and humidity, Joan & her band, as always, made this a circular performance; she made the sold out audience forget the excessive temperatures and instead focus on the beat, the message and an electrifyingly energetic performance that I shall never forget. There is nothing subtle about this performer - between her ability to play every instrument (which she does on the newest album with the exception of drums) belt out tunes of her own devise in any musical genre imaginable, and rock the house with constant standing ovations and applause affirms my opinion that this gal never ceases to amaze and never disappoints with her constant flow of compositions. The concert goer seated next to me commented on the length of the performance, summing it up with, "She's one not-so-little energizer bunny", to which I concurred. A performer one third her age could not of held up under the heat, lights and length of performance with the same level of unfading grit, energy, entertainment and love of her craft. Truly a consummate performer, accomplished self-taught musician, singer-songwriter-academic-humanitarian-Grammy award winner and inspiration for millions around the planet, Joan Armitrading shows us, with the humility of her roots, that at 60, she is only getting better as she ages in the music industry. She is a unique and true treasure for fans old and new! I traveled almost two hours to get to Longwood Gardens, which I would have done anyway as a member of the gardens, but I wouldn't drive two hours each way to see just any performer. I couldn't wait to get there, and played her latest album full volume on the drive home. As in in the wee hours of the morning, this morning recollecting the degree of enjoyment this inimitable woman inspires left this fan, still singing along with Joan!

    Joan was magical

by Torina on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

We thought that if we didn't see her this tour we might not ever get a chance again to see her perform live her in Philadelphia. We were so happy we did. The sound was great and everyone was enchanted. I didn't mind sitting outdoors in the 90 degree heat to hear her sing. Thanks Joan!

    Joan Armatrading was GREAT

by Banjopicker on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

I loved Joan Armatrading's music in the 80s but never had a chance to see her. This concert was terrific. She started off with a classic, and worked her way, with an excellent backup band (keyboard, sax/drums, bass) and a constantly changing series of guitars, through a broad repertoire of old and new, including her new CD. She is awesome, funny, brilliant and her voice is indescribable. Highly recommended.

Joan Armatrading - a class act!

by Ranaep on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

First of all it is one of the best venues I ever saw a show at. The seating was comfortable, the atmosphere and concessions offered were very well done. Joan was at the top of her game. Her music and demeanor speaks for itself. If possible, her guitar playing was even better than the last time I saw her. Her infusion of blues and jazz was great as was her talent on the guitar. Her setlist gave a ecclectic appeal from her vast catalog of music. The water fountains behind the stage provided a beautiful backdrop. A class act all the way!

    Joan is Amazing!

by RebH on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

As expected, Joan was absolutely amazing. Her talent is so effortless and her voice has such depth. She rocked the house and then silenced the audience with her timeless songs Love and Affection and Weakness in me. Gosh, this was an unforgetable show! Thanks Joan! We love you!

    Joan is the energizer bunny!

by KMBeverly on 7/8/10Longwood Gardens - Kennett Square

I have been a huge fan of Joan's for years. My friend who saw her for the first time last night described her as the energizer bunny and an amazing musician. And the friend is also a professional musician. She's right! Joan is incredible and she knows how to keep her audience happy by singing her classics. Great show!
