JJ Grey's show good but overproduced...
by groveChuck on 3/12/18The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami BeachRating: 5 out of 5Gainesville native, now living in Ft Lauderdale. Been to Lochloosa, Orange Lake, Santa Fe, Ichetucknee (JJ's neck of the woods) you name 'em, 100 times or more- JJ Grey sings about my home I left 30 years ago, but still visit. I just discovered JJ half a year ago (where have I been?) with Sweetest Thing, then find he's coming to town! The stars are aligned, I'm pumped!!! Go to see him at Fillmore Miami Beach Feb 2018, and... was disappointed. He's wearing a suit and tie, the light show is out of control, and I turn to my wife and say "This is like if Pitbull did Southern/Gospel Blues Rock." The music was good, but the show was just waaay overproduced. Was it because it was Miami Beach, I wondered? Maybe, but I can't see changing the look and feel for one show.
Don't hate on me for sharing, it wasn't bad, it's just that the production didn't fit the music.
Opening were the North Mississippi Allstars and (21 year old) Marcus King Band, and because they were supporting acts, they didn't get the over the top light show, and it worked. Can't recommend both of them highly enough, check them out.
I still love JJ, but man, his team has to turn down the show biz a bit.
Me? I'll see ya at Cross Creek...
