About

JIMMY CLIFF IN CONCERT:

Before there was Bob Marley there was Jimmy Cliff, the reggae pioneer widely credited with breaking the genre into the mainstream with his acting and soundtrack contributions to the classic 1972 Jamaican film The Harder They Come.  More than four decades  later Cliff continues to be at the genre's vanguard, taking home the Best Reggae Album Grammy in 2013 for Rebirth, his first new album in eight years. Whether he's lending his iconic high tenor to protest songs like "Vietnam" or inciting sing-alongs with his beloved cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," Cliff never fails to electrify audiences with his authentic performances, and his upcoming tour dates will be no exception.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Jamaican-born Jimmy Cliff began writing songs while still in primary school, scoring his first hit at just 14 with local favorite "Hurricane Hattie." After releasing several more regional hits in the early '60s, Cliff hit the big time with his 1968 international debut LP Hard Road to Travel. His reputation received another boost in 1972 with his starring role in Jamaican film classic The Harder They Come, which introduced global audiences to reggae via his iconic soundtrack contributions. Over his long and storied career, Cliff has released more than 30 albums and received numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013, his album Rebirth received a Grammy award for Best Reggae Album, cementing his place as one of the genre's living legends and paving the way for continued touring.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The show was fantastic! Jimmy Cliff just doesn't stop! He and the band had so much energy, and he told so many great stories, it was an amazing experience!"

"Jimmy hasn't lost a step! He did several encores, danced around the stage and offered his gracious love and compassion as the audience totally embraced him."

"Jimmy took the audience through a complete retrospective of his career, from before The Harder They Come up to the present, and the audience was really appreciative, bringing him back for 3 encores"

    JIMMY CLIFF

by oneoutoffive on 10/1/13Webster Hall - New York

LOVED IT!! Played all great songs. Have seen him many many times and will continue to if he comes back around. Saw him the next night as well but in Pa. He didn't do such a good performance in PA. shorter and different songs. Not sure why he would play in PA at the Keswick Theatre anyway. Nice venue for a play but not a concert. ??

Jimmy has lost nothing as far as energy and charisma. I did not realize he recorded the song 'Many Rivers To Cross' in NYC. He start out with Bongo Man/Rivers of Babylon medley - GOOSEBUMPS!

    Unforgettable Jimmy Cliff concert

by Musicalpolymath on 9/28/13House of Blues Boston - Boston

Excellent high energy concert. His 5 backup musicians were really into it, too. The night was special. Jimmy took the audience through a complete retrospective of his career, from before The Harder They Come up to the present and the audience was really appreciative, bringing him back for 3 encores. He ended up playing every one of his songs (and one other) from The Harder They Come album/soundtrack, others from his career, and some covers of songs of some of the musicians he had helped get started. He seemed to really feed off the audience, but also had the audience join in on familiar song choruses/refrains. I got to the concert early and, due to the way the House of Blues in Boston is set up, i was able to stand 8-9 feet from Jimmy for the entire concert. The place was packed.

Jimmy Cliff jamming at the SF Fillmore

by rocklover on 9/17/13The Fillmore - San Francisco

If you have never had the opportunity to see Jimmy Cliff live you must keep this on your to do list. Wow what a show this guy puts on. Wonderful mix of Ska and Reggae. he told lots of interesting stories around each tune he did putting the tune in historical perspective. he provided a wonderful easy to understand history of how Ska and Reggae moved forward in the 60's. He has a whole lot of energy left for a 65 year old. He looked in great shape in all black leather pants and coat. They did a nice drum only pieces at the beginning of the gig. Nice. He has a female singer with him who has a knockout of a voice. Very powerful. What a great time to see this real legend! Long live Ska!

This man must have a secret youth potion because he has the same sharp voice and energy as when he was 20 y/o and he is able to transfer it to the not so young anymore fans and get everybody dancing like crazy.

Jimmy Cliff's Ecstatic Star Power, 9-11-13

by robbie06 on 9/14/13The Fillmore - San Francisco

Jimmy Cliff was just INCREDIBLE. He did tons from The Harder They Come, the five or so best tunes: the title cut, Many Rivers To Cross, Sitting Here in Limbo, Johnny Too Bad, You Can Get It If You Really Want. To my surprise Cliff was the only guitarist in the band and since it's reggae as you'd guess he really didn't play any lead, all rhythm.........and it was great. He also played keyboards on a couple of mellow tunes. Backing him up he had keyboards, bass, drums, a female vocalist and a trumpet player who can really sing, he got lead vocals on one tune. Overall just an incredible show, REALLY glad I went. Only two tunes from the new record, Rebirth.......if you haven't heard it yet, you need to.........it's very, very good, Rolling Stone gave it 5 stars which is classic rating. I have no disagreement whatsoever. He did World Upside Down and One More from it. They started off with everyone sitting down and the entire band including Cliff were playing percussion instruments and harmonizing for 10 or 15 minutes............I want to tell you, it was beautiful!! But what blew my mind more than anything else was Cliff's AMAZING voice!! Walking out, my date said, "He's old! How can he still sing like that!!" Damn, I was thinking the exact same thing (FYI Cliff is 65). She loved the show as much as I did. I noticed NO reduction in Cliff's vocal range whatsoever........he's got such a vocal gift. The crowd was way, WAY into it..............the roar after Many Rivers To Cross and The Harder They Come were just deafening. Oh, he also did I Can See Clearly Now and the anti-war tune Afghanistan (I think I read that it's a remake of the anti-Vietnam war tune he wrote over 40 years ago). He did a wonderful, tender version of Cat Steven's Wild World. I want some of the anti-aging elixir Cliff is using...........he was ecstatic and vibrant onstage, very inspirational and happy and just an incredible performer, dancing around at times. If he comes back to this area I'd go in a minute. It was about exactly a two hour set. With Bob Marley being dead for many years............I think someone else has reclaimed the reggae throne, and rightfully so.

The Jimmy Cliff show at Montbleu was fantastic. He has so much energy he could've gone on longer that the 2 plus hours that he and his great band played. He touched all the bases with his hits and the history of reggae music. From early ska, rock steady to modern Reggae the guy is a true shaman of music. His voice is still good, his stage presence strong. I would recommend anyone who can see him on this tour should do so.

    JImmy Cliff is a classic

by MTHEK on 8/27/12MontBleu Outdoor Amphitheatre - Stateline

Though his voice doesn't always carry the tune, his excellent band and back up vocalists filled the rough spots and the music was great. Especially the acapella bongo song that morphed to the babylon classic song. That was really special.
